View Full Version : Wasabi & AKINA - AYCE Japanese Restaurant

Our family visited Wasabi (next to Star Walk Buffet, on the RIGHT side if you are facing the front door) last week.
In short, not worth going.
Price wise, it is typical Japanese AYCE range, $24/person tax & tip incl. However the food is not so great.
Many items you will need to pay extra, including beef sashimi. So be carefule whan you order by number and just picking from the photos in the menu. The fish sashimi was so-so, but doesn't have mackerel (which is my favour)
Deep fried stuff is below avg. the deep fried sea scallop is the worst. We can all tell there is freezer taste. Seems like it has been in freezer for too long, get the freezer burn. texture wise, outer breading is tough, yet inside is mashed. Tasteless.
Sushi is so-so again. Rice is too soft. In one case, when the plate arrive our table, the piece of fish (mackerel) already fallen off and landed on the side of the rice ball. No wasabi was put on the rice.
Hand roll, again is so-so.. Soft shell crab roll is about avg. Yet rainbow row has fallen apart again upon arriving our table.
Soup, well, I think it need more salt/favour in general. (we tried 3 different kind, all the same comment)
===
On the other hand AKINA (中心明菜), at Kennedy & Denison SW corner. Where the plaze has SDM. So far is the best. Not only they still offer 15% off (under $20/person incl tax & tips). But they do offer beef sashimi & mackerel sashimi.
The selection of hot items are great. They have deep fried Osyter in case you are interested. Grilled squid is recommanded. As well as Japanese style squid balls. In fact, this is the place I end up ordering more hot item than Sushi & Sashimi.
About the Sushi & Sashimi, they are pretty good as well. The fish is pretty fresh, and the selection is good. And I love their beef sashimi, it is fat and melt in your mouth. If you never have it before, you gotta try.
Soup-wise, again, they are good & tasteful.
And once in a while during dinner hour, the owner will make special dessert for the day which is not on the menu. And he will come around w/ a tray, and asking if you want it. Last time I was there he offer us 薑汁撞奶 (it is kinda Chinese dessert made out of milk. is kinda like Milk pudding, and the solidify process require the use of ginger juice) which I bet none of the AYCE place offer that... And yes, it was good, very good in fact.

Their cooked food is the best I've had (beef teriyaki, beef short ribs, grilled baby octopus etc), and their excellent tempura is based on what you order, so if you order shrimp tempura, you are only going to get shrimp tempura, and not a whole load of vegetable tempuras as well. Their spider roll and rainbow roll are really good. They are also pretty generous with their sashimi portions - whenever I order a certain number of pieces, they usually give me a few more slices.
I think the best thing about Akina is the service, pretty friendly, and hardly missing out on your orders. The seemingly permanent 15% off can't hurt either ;)
Compared to other more professional AYCE sushi reviewers here, I probably am not doing justice to Akina, but I think the place speaks for itself. It's definitely better than Yang's in terms of food and service, and is better than Sushi on 7 for their cooked food, but don't have as much raw fish variety.

I went to Akina last wkend...I must say...it's not bad @ all...
the restaurant..when we arrived...wasn't fall..there was a big table there..but after they left...they had too many waiters roaming around with nothing 2 do...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/littleangelvl/akina01.jpg
sashimi had ur typical...salmon, red snapper, white tuna, crab, surf clam...and one thing that was a little different...mackeral...imo, the sashimi was pretty good...only thing that suprised me was that out of all the things I ordered...sashimi came last..I would of thought it would come first since they would of had the fish all cut up & ready wouldn't they?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v211/littleangelvl/akina02.jpg
we ordered some of the hot food too..and it was quite yummy...the beef with enoki mushroom...I thought..the beef came a little raw...what I mean was that it was still dripping blood...a little scary....
they actually had ice tea as one of the drinks... :cheesygri
other than that....the only thing else 2 mention is that it's currently 10% off...not 15% off...I guess it's better than nothing...since "some other restaurant" haven't offered their coupon for a long time now...

I think it's the lighting in the restaurant..and the pic was taken with a camera phone..so that may be why it looked bad...it doesn't really look like that ...

on the menu..there is an icon to indicate what is only available for the dinner price..and I believe all the sashimi was only for dinner price..

I had a similar experience. The food was pretty good. Service was moreless pretty good before 6pm. After that, the place was packed and service slowed down considerably, especially since not all the waiters can take orders. We only got the 10% discount as well, but the posters and advertisments on the door all state 15% off!
Would I come bacK? Yes I would.

I went to Akina a couple of weekends ago and it is 10% off rather than 15% but the food is good there and they have a pretty large selction. From what I remember Wasabi was pretty good too, although I went there about half a year ago so I don't know how the food quality or service is now. Like the person above said, the 10% at Akina certainly helps so I'll be going back when I get a chance.

I went to Akina last night. The food was pretty good and there's a wide variety.
The only bad thing I really have to say about Akina would be in ambiance and service. Something about the furnishings just doesn't seem right to me. Then again, if your going for ayce, your not really there for ambiance, but that still doesn't really explain the service.
The wait staff didn't seem experienced to me. This isn't one of those tick menu places, so you have to order it verbally each time you want to order some more. Almost everytime I ordered, the waiter or waitress would need to look at the menu to see what item number it is. Only one of them was experienced enough to know what everything was, and she seemed a little rude (didn't say or do anything that was rude, just gave off that impression).
I got there at around 6:00, and at that time it was pretty dead, so service was pretty fast, but not very attentive. Once it got a few more people the wait staff were more attentive. When it was starting to get full at around 7:00, they had a lot more staff come in, but service just seemed to be going downhill. There were litterally waitresses walking up and down the aisle doing nothing at all and seemed to be ignoring my friend who would try to flag them down. Granted my friend is pretty bad in general for flagging waiters and waitresses down, but it's still pretty inexcusable to have been ignored that often (even for him).
Some good things about the service was that for once in my life, I actually got everything I ordered at a ayce restaurant. I don't think they missed a single order, which ayce places are notorious for doing.
But still, once again, the food was good and with that 10% discount (yes, the signs still say 15%, but it's 10%), it's definitely worth going back to.

Was it the short younger chick with the long hair? She wasn't that rude to us, but she totally gave us the impression we were wasting her time by wanting to order....

No, the only wait staff that knew what she was doing was a middle aged plump woman with glasses. But I also think I know who you're referring to. That waitress gave me the same feeling.
Strangely enough, it was the waiter who seemed nicest of all. The reason why I say it's strange is it's ussually waitresses who are nice to guys to get better tips.
BTW, this is to confirm that yes, sashimi is only available for dinner prices and the prices listed above are the original prices before 10% discount.

I think its the mundane existence of being a waitress that makes them seem so non-chalant. It doesn't justify their attitude but I certainly feel sympathy for them.

Went to Akina for the 2nd time on the weekend and this time it was worse than the first, I enjoyed it the first time. I think they only brought about 80% of the food we ordered, I don't know if this was due to the fact that our party was larger this time, 9 vs 4 the first time. However, the beef teriyaki and beef cubes with garlic tasted much better this time around.

Just went for lunch at Akina, and the quality was about the same as when they first opened last summer. their cooked food was much stronger than their raw. Overall the price to food quality is above average, but their service to price quality is way below. It was okay when we first arrived as the place was only 1/4 filled, but then after an hour it was 2/3 full and the waiting time got longer and longer. There was only two waitressess serving about 20 tables, and once in a while the owners had to come out to help taking orders. I wonder what would it be like when the place is completely full? I was not really full after hour and a half seating time limit, but then I lost my mood waiting for the orders to come out. They missed quite a few items and we had to re-order them with the owner. We will not go back any time soon.

I must say this if now my new favourite AYCE sushi restaurant based on food quality. The service is much better than wasabi where flaggin a waitperson required tackling them.
Couple bad points, if you don't reserve space good luck getting it if you have group of more than 4. At least that was the case I went. On the other hand, being full is an implied recognition of good food by others.
Boring decor, it shouldn't matter but these days when other places are upping the design factor (Go for tea, Wasabi, Lemon grass, ok they all look the same but i like it). It matters if it's date.
Sake for cheap AYCE, Wasabi for decor and cheap sashimi lunch AYCE and Akina for very good tempura and garlic sirloin.

Went to Akina for lunch today. The bill came to $25.50 for two people AYCE.
For the Price:
-Sushi selection was not very much, but it was fair quality. The spicy salmon was good.
-Iced tea AYCD
-The fried stuff was better than the sushi. Like shrimp tempura, terriyaki stuff, yakitori chicken, fried cuttlefish, dumplings, sushi pizza etc...
Overall I'd like to say that you definitely get your money's worth, but it's not the best sushi I've had.
I still prefer to pay a little more and go to Echo Sushi on Yonge.

My experience at AKINA was TERRIBLE..........at least you actually spent your two hours eatting. Me and my bf didn't make reservation thinking that it should be easy to get a table 'cause it's only for 2...next thing you know, we waited for an hour to get a table (we were number 4 on the waiting list) because they constantly give the tables to the ppl with reservation, and I bet you, some ppl didn't even make reservation 'cause those waitresses don't even check the book at all. THey just basically went, "you reserve? ok, next table is yours" so stupid......the only reason why i got a table was because one of the ladies who had "reservation" let us split her table 'cause they gave her a table of 10 when she only had 7 ppl in her group.... when i joined the lady's table, the 3 groups before me on the waiting list didn't even get a table yet....
so we finally got a table, thinking that we would finally get FOOD (think of 2 ppl who starved themselves for a buffet thinking they would be eatting at 7:30 but didn't get a table until almost 9pm) Anyhow, we ordered....waited for 20 minutes...NO FOOD!!!! THey completely forgot our order, we try to get waitresses to check/reorder our food for us, and apparently, only 2 outta 6 waitresses in the restaurant are allow to take orders, the others are just walking around cleaning tables or doing nothing and they just keep on saying "oh, I can't take food orders". And the stupid thing is, they don't have order sheets, so you have to tell them ur order and if they happen to miss anything or if they forgot, you really have no proof to trace.......We then finally got some food (not satisfy or full at all 'cause not everything we order came but we were just sick and tired of waiting again) At around 10pm we decided to just get some ice cream and leave. So we ordered ice cream, and the waitress said ok. 10:20pm...ice cream still hasn't arrived yet, I mean, all you have to do is just scoop it in a cup!!! So we asked another waitress on where our ice cream is, then she replied "oh i am sorry, our fridge broke down so all our ice cream melted." I was like WTF!??!?!!? if your fridge broke down and ur ice cream melted, how fresh are ur other food@!!?!?!?! I then got really ticked off and just asked for the bill....insurpisingly, the bill arrived to my table within 1 minute..................I usually tip a little bit more then the 10% they auto-charge on the bill, but this time, I didn't even give a penny.....
Would not go back again..............

been here,
thrice.
they randomly forget orders and their waitresses are extremely disorganized in assigning tables. We watched 2 parties get bounced around since other ppl were before them (chinese, dog eat dog mentality) and there was NO SINGLE person that was assigning numbers to people that walk thru the door... so it was who was the most brazen or threatening that got the table.
sashimi is good, fresh, decent cuts of fish, rolls are quite acceptable as well.. cooked food is good, and quite fast most of the time... almost has that pre-cooked feel to it.. they forget a few orders here and there and one of the waitresses is actually from yangs..so they may actually be connected.
surprisingly good selection, esp with the cooked dishes..
i have pictures, but i just can't eat as much as i used to.. been laying off the ayce's for a while hah.. its patchy, so if u are up to it, you will either be mildly surprised or peeved off...
in one sentence:
akina, sorta like a choose-your-own-adventure story meets AYCE sushi...food is decently above average when it gets to you, service is unpredictable.

that's bad.
avoid eating at AYCE when you see the restaurant is crowded/full
(feels stressful- waitress is stressed-out/ food comes out slower)
avoid crowded restaurants, waiting lines (go find another restaurant)
maybe give up on AYCE

I think we've all agreed.
Good/above average AYCE food (get the salmon teriyaki, really good, a friend of mine pounded back like 5 of em)
Bad/horrible service
Akina gets absolutely packed at around 7, so if you get there early, you should get decent service.

If it's a good quality AYCE, then people flock to it and service becomes slow. Maybe someone can recommend somewhere else that is just as good at around the same price level that isn't as crowded.
You do have to take into account that the area gets heavily crowded easily being near Pmall.

has anyone gone to akina recently? I think I got a tapeworm inside of me after I ate beef sashimi. I'm use to eating my steak and such medium rare and well it didn't feel right after I ate a few pieces of beef sashimi despite the fact they "cured" it with vinegar though I am not sure they properly did it well. I felt something running in my stomach and when I kept drinking it would fall down. Maybe it was my imagination but I think I have been infected with tapeworms. Should I go to the doctor? Obviously I'm alright but now but I read that it can survive in stomach acid and if left untreated with antibiotics, it can cause a lot of things. Worst Case scenario it will cause Intestine Blockage.

Tapeworm eggs are small enough to penetrate the walls of your blood vessesls.
When it goes through your body, it could reside in your brain. If it's healthy, you won't notice a difference, but when it starts dying, its control on blood vessels will start declining, and you may experience...well. several unpleasant symptoms.
Yay for House!
P.S. This actually can happen.

That's scary.
TBH, I think it's your imagination since they freeze the beef as well as put vinegar on it, which would help kill off worms and bacteria. But if it isn't, I'll have to rethink Akina being my favorite AYCE sushi restaurant. Get that checked out to be on the safe side I guess.

Never been to wasabi, don't think I will visit anymore AYCE sushi places.
You guys seriously think Akina is good? 2 of my friends got the runs from that place - don't think any of us are going back.
1. either we were just unlucky and ther servers were extra dumb that night and forgetful, or you guys are just too nice about it.
2. food was decent...some items were too oily and lacked flavour
3. did I mention the service is HORRIBLE? do I have to ask you to bring a spoon 3 times to 3 seperate servers when you bring me a bowl of soup noodles, I understand you're underpaid and it shows with your gloomy faces and attempts to ignore people waving you down.
overall IMO, AKINA is a no go.

service was aslo ok,i mean in nyc restaurant it is hard to get 5star service,a lot of people, big lines, last time when i been ther,it was very busy,so i been waited for about 30 minutes, and they sorried about 20 times and gaved me king salmon sashimi and coke for free.

If you've been to the one by pacific mall we are, otherwise I think you may have found a new akina.
Edit: nm, you're talking about a akina in nyc, we're talking about one in Toronto

I've been to many of the AYCE sushi places... I would say AKINA is average..
personally I like that they serve mackerel sashimi (I was there for last week for Dinner) and that the ingredients in their rolls were delicious, in addition to having less rice than you would usually find.
Other than that, they forgot orders, their serivce was slow, and their food flavor/presintation was average..
Oh, if only I had the time to write a review :P

akina is not a bad restaurant, it's probably middle of the road. they have a large menu selection with something like 176 items. but they give fountain drinks..instead of cans serrvice gets worse as the place gets busy, some orders are forgotte, some waitress dont speak english, but food and portions is decent.

ackerK;2935275']And once in a while during dinner hour, the owner will make special dessert for the day which is not on the menu.
PROTIP: They always have that, its not special. You just need to ask for it.
The service is mediocre, but what food DOES come is very good for an AYCE of that price.
