Any fine restaurant recommendations in the Hamilton (or surrounding area)? Sometime better than the mainstream ones but not the really fancy ones.

No, it isn't expensive like some of the really high end places. $150 will get you a nice dinner with some wine.

I actually got married there, everyone was very happy with the food.

Hey I got married there too! Aug 14 1999

I still love making the meal we had for our wedding.

The dessert...mmm......new york cheesecake, baked in phyllo pastry with fresh berry coulis....

AWESOME !

mlc2000 - ours was Sept 2002, a few years later. We had the ceremony there as well, at their outdoor chapel.

Yup, us too. Had about 90 people, everyone raved about the food.

We have a string quartet play at the out door chapel. Was very nice.

The other memorable thing on that day was my dad leaving his dress pants in Mississauga. He had to go downtown Hamilton and buy dress pants. :cheesygri

The only thing u can get downtown Hamilton is piercings and tattoos.
Ended up buying some horrible polyester pants. He told the whole story to the room.

Wow, $150? That's quite a bit. Sounds like it's worth it though, maybe for a really special occasion.

mlc - we had live music as well, and our wedding was the same size!

$150 is not really expensive as far as fine dining goes. Heck, a decent meal at The Keg is $100 these days. The get real high end, it's quite a bit more. We stayed at Langdon Hall (luxury country inn in Cambrige) a couple weeks ago, our dinner for two was nearly $300 with all tax and tips. Worth it, though!

Bullseye....have you been to the Landmark Steak House in downtown Burlington yet? Burlington has some really great places to eat, including two small places, Bianca's Bistro and Mizunas. Biancas lets you bring your own wine, corkage is only $15. Went there for our anniversary last year, brought a $70 bottle of wine (they actaully sell the same stuff down the street at $180/bottle).

Owner of Bianca's used to be personal chef to Pierre Trudeau.

Haven't been to any of those places yet, but will keep them in mind for future special occasions. Our usual haunts are the cheap Vietnamese/Thai/Indian/etc places that keep popping up around the city.

The Thai place at Fairview / Appleby is quite good., except for the rude waiters.

Theres an awesome new(er) chinese take out in North Burlington called Red Chilli, they have another lcoation in Oakville, that people from all over were driving to.

Not your regular chicken balls crap.

Its at northwwest corner of Upper Middle and Walkers Line.

whats good vietnamese in Gurlington?

I agree about the Thai place you mentioned, but I haven't been there since Funky Thai opened on Hwy 5 and Bronte. It's slightly cheaper, and has better food.

Haven't been to Red Chili yet, but have been meaning to, thanks for the rec. There is one in Oakville as well, on Kerr st.

Our usual Vietnamese place is Saigon On Brant downtown, we've been going there regularly since it opened. Nice family run place, cheap, big portions. There is also another one in the same plaza as the Thai place you mentioned, it's a little nicer decor, only been a couple times, but the food is good. A new place just opened downtown as well, forget the name, haven't been yet, but looking forward to trying it out.

Have you been to Bombay Grill on Fairview and Walkers? Good Indian food, we're been regulars since it opened. There's also a new-ish buffet/takeout place at Guelph/Upper Middle that is quite good, we go for the $10 buffet every couple weeks. Our baby boy loves naan, he eats so much I'm surprised they don't charge us for another person!

Will second this recommendation, but can't be considered "fine" dining. Been going since it opened as Bombay Chat.

For the OP,

I also also recommend the Old Mill Inn. Great food, spectacular view. - http://www.ancasteroldmill.com

For other options, someone recommended Shakespeare's Steakhouse to me, although I haven't gone personally. The menu looks more pricey then Old Mill Inn. http://www.shakespeares.ca

For something a bit more affordable, I recommend the Wild Orchid. They are a Portuguese restaurant, with a fair amount of seafood. Really good though. http://www.wildorchidrestaurant.ca

I also recommend La Cantina, an Italian restaurant. http://www.lacantina.com

All the websites should have menus with prices to help you out.

I can officially update this thread....I went to the Landmark Steakhouse in Burlington and it was....superb.

I had probably the best calamari ever, the special was 18oz Angus Rib Steak with lobster mashed potatoes. The dessert was awesome, some special lindt milk choclate mousse....outstanding. Nice jazz duo playing thru dinner, they have a really cool 385gallon fish tank behind the bar, u can see through to the other dining area. Theres a lounge, 3 separate dining areas downstairs and 2 upstairs.
They are also the only restaurant in Burlington with a balcony....should be teriffic in the summer...

This is fine dining, bring your wallet.

Dinner for 2 with wine was $190 +tip.
Without wine, $145.

Strange...I wonder why I thought it was closed?

We ate there once (Sonzi), but won't be going back. We were served by the owner himself, who was condescending and barely paid attention to us. Maybe because we are fairly young? I don't know, but we certainly didn't feel very welcome. The food was very average as well, definitely not worth the money we paid.

Yea I've found the service hit and miss at Sonzi.
Shame, the food is tasty, but u you're not interested in me, the customer, I can eat at home.

Great Creme Brulee there.... sometimes we go there for dessert
