Well? Anyone have any suggestions?
We used to go to Kamei in Burnaby alot but their quality has slipped somewhat. We also like Taisho at Metropolis but their quality has dipped as well.

The tuna I had at Taisho was still frozen when I had it as well. Yeah, I have to agree with you that the service there is crap. Really dumb servers. $16.95 isn't worth it for their regular non sashimi all you can eat. Speaking of service, we weren't too impress with the slow service at Granville sushi as well. It almost took them a half an hour to bring us the bill!!

We decided to try this out last night and were fairly impressed. For $10.95 a head, the selection and quality were quite good. You also get 4 pieces of sashimi per person also (tuna or salmon).

Try Tokyo Ichiban in Richmond.
It's located across on Landsdowne across the street from Landsdowne Mall.
There's also another location on North Road, but I don't like that one.

Granville Sushi. Same thing happened to us too. Waited and waited and finally got someone's attention. Man, it's like they don't want the money. The quality was ok but for my money I still like Shabusen on Granville (they have another one downtown somewhere) where you get both Korean BBQ and Japanese for something like 13 bucks lunch and 20 bucks dinner.
Mmmnnnnnnn .... BBQ.

Ebisuya (Ebisoya?) on Broadway between Main and Fraser is a great little place that isn't very well-known. The sashimi is usually perfect (not frozen, but not warm). Best scallop cones and spicy tuna sashimi around. $18.95 (I think). No problems in the report on the health inspection site, which is pretty rare.

Tried E Bei (Granville & 41st) last month.
Other than the long wait for a table (45mins), everything was good. Service was fine, we got exactly what we ordered without any problems (other all-you-can eat may throw anything on your table either you ordered it or not). The dinner menu is excellent, with a great selection of sushi/sashimi. Raw Oysters, Shrimp ONLY tempura, Hamachi sushi, Ebi sushi, etc..... all the good stuff for $20.95 Weekdays, add $1.00 more on weekend/holidays.
Best sushi all you can eat in Vancouver.
Now, Tokyo Ichiban is trying to change thier menu like Ebei... anyone tried ichiban recently?

Decent. Have had better although from an all-you-can-eat perspective it's probably pretty good. Nice servers.
Best sushi not all-you-can-eat is Octopus' Garden on Cornwall. Delicate, delicious and quality over quantity. Consistent too. Say hi to Sada on the way in. He's the owner behind the sushi bar.

And don't go to Aji Taro on No. 3 Road and Alderbridge Way. We saw a cochroach heading towards the kitchen area.
Aji Taro was closed down for a short time over a year ago, probably for health reasons.

" I LOVE SHUSHI "
A Jap Rest called "I love shushi" on #3 & new westminster hwy has $11 AYCE Sun to Thur. If you eat Jap food so much, you know the favor of rice is quite important, it determines the shushi is HQ or not. And I love shushi is the one of the best rice I tasted. If you compare to Ebei, of course I love shushi menu has not many choices, but the over all rate for me is very high due to taste + price. Ebei is very good, but very common and famous, most of ppl eat jap food know it. Reporting unfamous good jap rest is much valuable in this thread. Boardway Kamei is good if they still have AYCE.

OK, I'm going to answer my own questions here. The $11 AYCE is from 9pm onwards til closing. The menu is posted outside the restaurnat. The restaurant is not exactly on #3 and Westminster Hwy. It is on Westminster Hwy about 2 or 3 blocks east of #3 Road in a minimall on the north side of the road. Dinner is $20.95 per person and there is a vast selection of goodies here. One interesting piece of sushi was the sharks fin sushi: never had it before and it was quite tasty. We had the dinner AYCE and were very impressed with the quality of the food. They also don't use huge gobs or rice in their sushi like other places do. I'll definately be back. Parking may be a bit of a hassle though since the lot is quite small.
I would have tried more items on their menu but I had just come back from a business trip and bought a party pack of 65 Timbits to consume on the plane ride back so I couldn't eat as much as I usually do.

Yup, Shabusen here too :). I like the Granville location a bit better. I don't really like all you can eat anymore because the sushi is pretty sub-par, but I guess if you're really hungry it's not a bad idea. Top Gun sushi in New West is alright for the price as well.
Haha I don't find the servers at Taisho that bad, the ones at Sui Sha Ya on the Metrotown side are even worse! :D

We went to I Love Sushi last night for their $11.95 'late night' specials. Unfortunately, last call for these specials is at around 10:15PM. They were extremely busy last night when and the service was not very good at all but we were sitting at the sushi bar and just ordered rolls and other uncooked items from the sushi chef instead of having to go through the waitress. When it died down a bit, we got the opportunity to order cooked items. The quality of the food is excellent. The oysters motoyaki are some of the best I've tasted. Other items of note are the california rolls, house special roll, agadashi tofu, beef short ribs.
Afterwards, we went to Starbucks for the green tea frap. That was great too!!

Another vote for I love Sushi. One of my favorite all you can eat place to go too!
Too bad I'm on diet now! but I go there after 9pm for their $7.75 combos. (choose 3 items out of a specific menu. the server probably will give that to you when you're getting seated. Their salmon belly is tasty (and it's not on the all you can eat menu.)

TSAMURAI SUSHI on Davie street (by Stepho's). Big pieces of sashimi!
Or there's one across the street from the Old Spaghetti Factory in New West. Don't know the name, but it's CHEAP. I think it's 8 bucks for AYCE on any afternoon before 4. They don't worry about that sashimi maximums, either, so it's a really good deal.

The name of the restuarant across from New Westminister skytrain station is call "Sapporo Club House Japanese Restaurant".
Dinner is only $14.95 with a fair selection on the menu. They dropped the price dued to the newly open "Top Gun Sushi" inside the New Westminister Quay.
I havn't tried Top Gun Sushi yet, but if you like Richmond Sushi then you should like Top Gun Sushi, since it's the same mangement and chefs. Is $5 cheaper than Richmond sushi and similar menu.

Shabusen on Granville
$20.15 for all you can eat sushi/korean bbq as stated before.
But there's all you can eat sashimi... ^_^
Tried grilling the sashimi on the grill the other day.. really interesting stuff... espescially with that sauce. Started grilling a California roll when an employee walked in... looked @ me funny and walked out smiling... California roll was no good tho on the grilll so don't do that! -_-
$10.50 for lunch but it's limited sashimi and a reduced menu. But good regardless :)
One of the few All-you-can-eat places that I've actually enjoyed myself at...
Sui Sha Ya, Kisha Poppo, Tokyo Ichiban are all pretty decent. But it really depends on what you order... Of course many of these places have lost their touch since they opened...
fortissimo

I haven't been to all, but my favourite all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant in Greater Vancouver is Kamei Royalle on W. Broadway near Cambie (someone else mentioned in this thread). Dinner is $24./person, so it's a few dollars more than other places, but the quality of food is closer to good a la carte restaurants (unlike other all-you-can-eat ones).
At late night, when I'm hungry (because I didn't have dinner), and crave something with good value, then I'll go to Richmond Sushi (not too far from me) for their $12. late night all-you-can-eat menu. Although their dinner menu has more stuff, but this kind of place is my kind of "fast food" so I am not willing to pay them more :-) .
Years ago, Richmond Sushi was so bad that I was not going back (they changed, so I'm back now, but only for cheaper menu). At one time, their cooked food (dinner time/menu) was cold, even fried stuff! How terrible! But even now, I can't go there too often, their late night menu only had that many items I like, and few in the cooked section, so I get bored after a couple of times.
I'm surprised that Aji Toro (not Taro) is still around? (But I read some people recommend such place on another forum, haha, but that's not a food related forum though). Years ago I was there, and the sushi chef was given a $5. bill by another employee (probably a hostess), and after taking it, he continued to cut sushi. I've never been back since. (but their service was very slow, and they didn't come and take my order, that was many years ago).
Tokyo Ichiban on North Road is now closed. They open a new one in Grand Paraire, Alberta, but not all-you-can-eat. I rarely go there, but occassionally with friends. Service is not good, but I don't know of other all-you-can-eat places having raw oysters and also geoduck (raw) available, as they are both pricey stuff. Still, it won't get my vote if it's my choice. One time the sashimi came so slow, it seems like it's a conspiracy (to get you to eat other cheap stuff first).
I don't like Shui Sha Ya (only been to Richmond one, but was told that was the better ones already). Serving is small quantity, and quality is only so-so. Service is also not that great. Not really worth going.
I heard Taisho is the same ownership with the Daimasu group (also same as Kamei Robota group); been there a couple of times long time ago. Not much of a good experience although nothing too bad I can remember.
I heard aboue E Bei, so I'll try that sometime. A friend said good things about it too.
Never been to Sushi King so I cannot comment.
I don't like Shabusan, because the Japanese menu is not much, and the serving is small. I don't care much about the BBQ side, as there are better BBQ ones out there (also all-you-can-eat) if that's what you want. The service was terrible years ago. It was quite bad one time that my friends paid little tips, and the server came rushing down the stairs to chase them, asking if anything wrong. (Granville and 15th one).
I used to go to I Love Sushi, even before all-you-can-eat menu. The service has always been bad, at best so-so. One time the roof was leaking and dripping water on my table and on my head. It was not that busy, and I asked to move my table, stating my reason. The waitress had an indifferent attitude, that as if I was lying (even if I wanted to change table in a non busy and available circumstances, how wrong could that be?). However, I still went back from time to time, mostly for late night menu. Since the nice Vietnamese sushi chef left, they got a Cantonese speaking sushi chef, and that one night it was very busy. The chef was swearing out loud (in Cantonese), while making sushi, because there were so many orders coming. I was scared that he was going to take his sushi knife on the customers! Holy smoke, I was never going back there. (There are 2 I Love Sushi restaurants in Washington, the one in Lake Union, Seattle, is very nice, it's unrelated to the Richmond one. If you go there, must try the tofu cold plates, not seen anywhere else. They have a website to see which sushi chefs are on duty and what's the specials as well.)
If I'm allowed to mention non all-you-can-eat places, then one of my favourites are Kiyo on Cambie, near No. 5 in Richmond. It's always consistent on food quality, both sushi and cooked food, although their tempura is not always as consistent in the crunchy texture. Service is sometimes slow, and some waitress is not always smiling. Still, it's the best in Richmond.
There is a great one in Surrey, that is quite new, and thus not well known. It's called Hanako, near Gilford area. A very small place, run by family (Japanese). Excellent quality, and not very expensive for this level (may be because it's in Surrey, would have cost a lot more if this quality is in Vancouver?). Best sashimi I have had. Excellent layout and supplementary sides as well on the plate.
Kyocha-Ya on Robson was the place to go 11 years ago, but it's long gone. Was the best deal, with quality. All-you-can-eat wasn't even around in those days.
Another great little place east of Metrotown on Kingsway, is called Sushi House (I'm not 100% sure). Mainly for take-out, but can eat-in. Not much hot / cooked food, but sushi / sashimi is always great and fresh. Run by Japanese. Not expensive.
Because of health risk, I take it more seriously when going for sushi than to other foods. If a place is doubtful in its operation or cleaniness, or the food freshness, I just won't go. (Same for raw oysters.)
Another thing is that you want to have a great atmosphere, and good service, and enjoy the meal, especially for sushi. Bad atmosphere, and poor service, is just not matched for the kind of food. So this will automatically rule out many of them.

Sushi House is right next to MiddleGate Honda in the little "strip" mall area. It's very reasonably priced and they move tons of food through their take-out so the food is definitely fresh.
Their dynamite roll is a good deal and tasty.
I still love Octopus' Garden on Cornwall for a la carte. Quality food with some real creative touches but higher prices because of food and location. You know the joint is good when you see the owner behind the sushi bar surveying his livelyhood. Sada is his name. Great guy.

I put in a vote for Richmond Sushi!!!!
Their "deluxe" menu costs a couple dollars more, but is well worth it!!!
Besides the regular stuff, that is good... as they don't pack the rice in everything.... my favourite is their grilled black cod. Black cod is just yummmm..... and I non-stop eat it.
oysters are supposedly realli good, even though i don't touch it myself.
but unfortunately, tonite is gonna be sui sha ya for me... not my choice, but gramma wantsta go there....
*sigh* no cod for tonite...

Kamei Royale Broadway for their very good selection of sushi and other appetizers, esp the daily specials
I went to Sui shi ya in Lansdowne, I thought it was mediocre at best. Nice chicken teriyaki and salmon sahimi... but everything else was bleh.
Sushi rice was flakey and falling apart, Spicy tuna sashimi had more onion than tuna, baked oyster was dry and spongy (and the actual oyster was shriveled up and tiny). Tempura yam had way too much flour layer, and the eel was dry and bland.
Not to mention that they gave us 20 pieces of salmon sushi when we asked for 20 pieces of sashimi, and refused to admit we ordered sashimi.
All in all, pretty much a waste of $24

Best sushi not all-you-can-eat is Octopus' Garden on Cornwall. Delicate, delicious and quality over quantity. Consistent too. Say hi to Sada on the way in. He's the owner behind the sushi bar.

if you're willing to travel out to new west. King sushi on 6th and 6th is the best all you can eat sushi i've ever had. none of those small ass rolls that you only find at all you can eat places, and they're very quick on the orders

I tried Kamei Royale on Broadway last week and it was very good but I still prefer E.Bei since they have all you can eat prawn tempura while Kamei Royale has prawn and veggie tempura. I'm a big fan of prawn tempura and can easily eat 10 pieces.
Kamei Royale does have a slightly better sashimi selection then E. Bei though. Although limited to 1 order per person, the geoduck sashimi was very tasty at K.R.
Some random notes:
1-A pitcher of pop is a relatively good deal at K.R at $5.99.
2-The desert item at E. Bei is mango pudding while at K.R., it was just jello.
3-Free parking is alot easier to find around E. Bei.
4-Service is better at K.R. but the seats are not that comfortable.
5-The atmosphere at K.R is more relaxed and is less noisy. At E. Bei people seem to be running around everywhere and the restaurnt is jam packed. It's really a chinese restaurant disguised as a Japanese one.

There's a place called Jiro and it's around NE of Broadway and Main. It's on the 2nd floor. It's got great food and lot of selection. All the sashimi you can cram down your throats too. Their spicy sashimi is fantastic. It's about $19 for dinner though.
Places to avoid:
- The one in Metrotown. Absolutely horrible food, they couldn't even get the ice cream right. It tasted like fish and smelled like a nasty freezer (I'm not even embellishing that statement). And they limit you to the amount of motoyaki's you can order too (one per person; how sad is that?). I'll never go there again.
- Sui Sha Ya at Lansdowne. Subpar food. Small. Limited sashimi. Mayo in a dyanmite roll? wtf eh?
As people have already mentioned, the one in Ironwood is great. Richmond Sushi has fantastic Oyster Motoyakis and service is quick. Late night starts at 930pm, reservations are highly recommended otherwise don't bother showing up for another hour and a half. E bei is supposed to be great. I used to go to Granville Sushi but haven't been there in years. My $.02.

I'm not too crazy about the ones in Metrotown either: Taisho on the Metropolis side and Sui Sha Ya close to the Bay.
It seems as Sui Sha Ya sucks no matter which location you go to when compared to favorites such as E. Bei, I Love Sushi, Kamei Royale, etc.
The last time I went to Granville Sushi, I wasn't too impressed with their menu and the service was just plain crappy. The couple next to us was equally frustrated with the lack of service and with messed up orders.
For good non all you can eat, I like this small place in Station Square at Metrotown called Yako Sushi. I usually just get a rice or noodle dish here and a California roll. The total is about $10.
A couple of years back, we went to this place on 1st Avenue across the flea market (forgot the name now) and the japanese food wasn't very good at all but it was quite cheap. They did, however, have some very good vietnamese spring rolls. Has anyone been there lately?
Anyone else try Jiro and have anything positive to say about it?

I went to the I love Sushi Place after someone recommended here, the food was not that great. Compared to Ichiban, Ichiban was a lot better. (I'm comparing with the late night menu only)
Some of the pieces of sushi they gave us was so damn huge... can't even fit in yoru mouth cuz there was so much rice on it.
Also they don't have sashimi as part of the late night menu. Also that place is supertiny. I was happy there was not a fire there.

You mean Kirin Sushi? I've been there with my GF a couple of times, not too bad was tasty and service was good. Reasonably priced, between the two of us we orderd a boat + a couple other things. Let's just say we had grilled fish for lunch the next day it was quite a bit to eat.

Upon recommendation of a RFDer I went to Hanako on 152nd and 101 Avenue in Surrey. Best sushi I have ever had. The sushi practically melts in your mouth. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. No all you can eat. Apparently the sushi chef is a "professional" from Japan.
Highly recommended.

Richmond Sushi is one of my favourites. I know almost everyone there by name :) Pretty consistent quality although for a while a couple of years back their quality just downright sucked. Back to good now though.
Samurai Sushi on Davie and thurlow in downtown vancouver is my fav. non-all you can eat sushi place, and the servings are huge. Biggest that I've ever seen. I pretty much go there all the time now as opposed to AYCE, as they are cheap, good, and super filling :) Everyone should definitely check them out. I think that they have a branch near Cambie and 41st too.

Richmond sushi is definitely a good place for AYCE... New menu makes it even better. Good selection, and the quality is good. Service is quick and effiecent.
Ebei is excellent (i posted this before) but there's simply too much people that go there. You can't even get a seat even if you made reservations. Once you sit down, they rush you out as soon as you put down your chop sticks. Is definitely not a good place to enjoy a dinner, and its super noisy and crowded as mentioned from other posts.
There's a place that has a better menu than Ebei, but nobody really knows about. I have tried it a few times now and is excellent. They even have UNI sushi (no limit) if you like UNI. Hamachi Sashimi (4pcs), over 10 kinds of sushi and 5 kinds of sashimi, prawn tempura, raw oysters, and everything else EBei has. You won't find any mango pudding there, but you can choose 3 flavour italian ice cream (green tea, mango, and chocolate).
***UPDATE****
Went last night. When we sat down it was only 7:30, but the waitress told us they ran out of UNI. We decided to stay. The hamachi came and it was dark in color. Obviously not fresh. Raw beef also black in color. I wonder what happened to this place. Tried it many times, this is my worst experience there. Only good part was the raw oysters. It is good size compare to before. I guess because no one dare to eat raw oysters these days, so the restauarant can get these big oysters cheap.

Sushi house and sushi garden are both pretty good non-AYCE places, both are on kingsway, in burnaby.
For AYCE, I enjoyed richmond sushi and top gun sushi is pretty good too. Looking to try out either kamei royal, I love sushi or EBei this week. Any suggestions from people who have tried at least two of these places for regular dinner, on which one is best, in terms of quality and selection?

We went to I Love Sushi in Richmond and they don't have all you can eat for dinner anymore. They only have an all you can eat late night menu now. Too bad.
This was a bit of a disappointment so we had to cross the street and eat dinner at the Richmond Public Market. Dinner for 2 was only $8!!

Does anyone know any sushi places in Vancouver that have really great party trays at good prices? I have a couple of pot luck dinners coming up and I think I'll just bring sushi...always a crowd pleaser. I'm too lazy to cook. I've been ordering from Ikkyu Ramen Ten. They have the Makimono Party Tray that has 62 pieces for $28.75, which contains:
Chop Scallop roll (6 pieces)
California roll (6 pieces)
Salmon maki (6 pieces)
Negi Salmon roll (6 pieces)
Tekka maki (6 pieces)
Alaska roll (6 pieces)
Kappa roll (6 pieces)
Negitoro roll (6 pieces)

Salmon nigiri (4 pieces)

I don't think I'll ever want to eat Sushi again.
I went to that place in Metrotown, and it was decent and all, ( more than usual for a sushi AYCE joint, 16$ or something - weekend) then afterwards I felt like total crap.
Not just bloated and full, but pretty sick, cause most AYCE places serve low quality food.
I'll almost threw up too... You know those burps that you also burp up stomach contents too, it's not really vomitting, but really close border line? Yeah that's what happened to me.

My fave Sushi place that strikes a balance between quality, creativity, coolness and affordability is:
Octopus' Garden right on Cornwall and ... on the same block as the Mac's convenience store in Kits.
Sada, the owner and chef is a great guy and his restaurant dishes out really tasty food. Try a dry run there for the food first and then see if a party tray or two would be too expensive.
We bought a large one for my rehearsal dinner and it was *gone* in a flash. I mean, I didn't even get to have a dynamite roll. It wasn't that cheap though but you get what you pay for for the most part when it comes to sushi (and other things ...).
I have no problems whatsoever recommending business his way. Good luck.
Oh, best chicken karaage in town hands down IMO at OG. Boneless and soooo tasty. All my friends have been converted and they have converted their friends too. Make sure you ask for liberal amounts of chili/japanese mayo dipping sauce!

I am a bit of a food Connoisseur and have tried most of the AYCE Japanese places around Vancouver. Here is my vote:
Best overall - Todai - Seattle Centre (coming soon to Vancouver!)-don't forget free meal on your birthday (need to show ID) - excellent food and amazing variety - Its a seafood feast that blows away anything local.
Best Variety - Ebei (dinner before 9:00 - everything except Uni)
Most reliable and best value - Richmond Sushi (after 9:30pm) - great oyster motoyaki
Best barbecue and sushi - Shabusen (Both Granville and Burrard locations)
All of the places are great but just wait until Todai comes to town!

I have to agree with most of what you said but I wasn't that impressed with the Sushi at the Todai in Redmond Center, the one at the Aladdin in Las Vegas or the one in downtown Portland. Their other stuff was good though. My favorite was the baked lobster halves!!
I also thought that the AYCE at Kamei Royale on Broadway was of very high quality but the selection wasn't as good as E. Bei. I'm especially fond of the prawn tempura and beef sashimi at E. Bei. I don't know of any other AYCE place that just allows you to order just prawn tempura without the veggies.
Last week, I had lunch at Richmond Sushi and noticed that they don't put as much rice in their tuna and salmon sushi anymore. :D Same amount of fish but less rice is always a good thing!!
Do you know where the location will be in the GVRD? It's going to be tough competition up here with all the AYCE joints up here.

Mwhahaha... I think I can contribute to this ....
I've been interested and eating sushi nearly 8 years ago... when I got over the fear of eating raw fish. My friends and I have been jumping around from place to place ...
It began with ShuShaYa @ metrotown. As my first AYCE restaurant, I thought it was fairly good with decent service (not many people during dinner). I don't remember the price or anything... but I think it was around $20 per person. I eventually went back for late night food, and it still seemed good. However, now that I look back, the food quality was meager and not worth my money.
So, we jumped to Daimaru (I think) located in Richmond... forgot the address. I was introduced to this restuarant by my cousin and I thought that it was better than ShuShaYa. However, the restaurant wasn't very clean and the food was not much better than ShuShaYa's... again not a very good restaurant IMO.
Then we moved onto Richmond Sushi, introduced to my through my friends. I went there for lunch and I thought that it was a big difference in food quality. The hot foods (chicken teriyaki... wings..) was pretty good. The sushi rolls however, has this "different" taste to it... can't really describe it. I loved the mango pudding and remembered us orderin 2-3 each. However, one of the managers (I think), got eerie on us and started making strange/rude comments to us. Then we found...
Ajitaro (Richmond.. across Lansdowne). After reading this thread... I'm not going back there again.. but I found that the food quality was way better than the previous mentioned. The chicken and beef teriyaki were served hot on a (metal platter... I think haha) and the sushi was fairly good. I've only eaten during the late night times... so I don't know much about the dinner quality. The service was great, especially one time when we had ordered a amount of food and they had given us MORE than we asked for. The manager came up to us and said, "it's ok, you don't have to eat it all". Don't know if she still works there or not.
Then comes a whole variety of other restaurants...
Kamei Royale - BEST quality japanese food I've eaten in all my life (for AYCE). The waitresses all dressed up in japanese suits was interesting as well. The price was a bit steep for dinner, but it was definitely worth it. I think it was around $25.
Shabusen - Pretty good quality japanese food... this would be my second choice for AYCE. I ate there during dinner and found the sashimi to be pretty good... One thing I can't stand is crappy tuna shashimi. If it's good tuna, you can taste the texture difference... and crappy tuna shashimi makes me wanna barf. I enjoyed Shabusen's tuna sashimi =] Besides, knowing a worker there gets me some discount =D
E-Bei - Forgot this experience... but I have to admit that it was a pretty good restaurant... didn't leave any impressions on me when I left.
General Mess Hall - Korean BBQ / Jap AYCE... I went to this restuarant during their grand opening... It was a great experience. The foods served were very fresh and the BBQ was very good. However, I have heard that this restaurant's quality has degraded ... not too sure... service was good. It was in coquitlam...
a bit to say about the NON AYCE restaurants...
Gyus (or was it Guus) - small restaurants ... one's on robson I believe. THE BEST creative/interesting japanese food I've ever eaten in my life. The is a true japanese restuarant, run by japanese people and chefs. The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. (lots of couples and romance in the air when I went). You can hear the waitress yelling the order to the chefs... and they would confirm it. Service is awesome there as well.
Samurai Sushi - A decent place to eat some VERY VERY large abnormal sizes of sushi. The california rolls there are roughly 2-3 times larger than your regular ones. It is fairly clean and the price is pretty good for large sushi. I go there when I'm poor and have sushi cravings. $3.50 for a HUGE alaska roll (diced crab meat, salmon sashimi, avacado, diced cucumbers).
Summary...
ShuShaYa (all locations)- Ok, but not a choice anymore with all the available restaurants :: $20 for dinner AYCE, BAD AMOUNT OF MSG! made me thirsty like hell after
Daimaru - No way, BAD AMOUNT OF MSG!
Richmond Sushi - Maybe... I want to see their new menu now, BAD AMOUNT OF MSG!
Ajitaro - Health issue concerns me, BAD AMOUNT OF MSG!
Shabusen - Yes! I go here often! not much of a MSG residue =]
Kamei Royale - Special occasions, not much of a MSG residue
E-bei - Can't say TOO much...
Taisho @ metropolis - DO NOT STEP INSIDE.
Daimasu - meager...
Gyus (Guus) - tad expensive but VERY delicious.
Samurai Sushi - McDonalds version of sushi... bad MSG residue
Kishu - 40% off after 7pm... dirty dirty
For AYCE... doesn't it seem that they don't give you the right amount of food when you order them? I mean.. for example once you sit down, you order 20 pieces of salmon shashimi. We often get 10 or 15 pieces... rarely the correct amount. This becomes more frustrating when you order something like... agedeshi tofu and they give you 4 pieces when you wanted 4x4pieces. Then when you near the end and you want 4 pieces of agedeshi tofu... they give you 4x4 pieces! Then I'm in bewilderment because I thought they give it to you by the piece! causes a lot of frustation =[. One way I found that helps is to write down (pieces) at the end of your order slip =D.
Also... don't you guys find the MSG content of some AYCE resturants to be horrible? ... sometimes I would be thirsty like crazy and I've only eaten sushi... not exercised. It couldn't be the soy sauce because I've eaten sushi without soysauce (don't ask why or how)... and 15-30 mins after we leave the restaurant, I would stop by some 7-11 to get a drink.
Gah~ my $0.02 also

Good info zenity, thanks to you and others who have contributed to this thread.
shumwun, i'd love to make it to the New West one as it's in my back yard pretty much ... but I can't so good luck on the event. I've had Top Gun once as take out and was pleasantly surprised as it was decent to pretty good.
What really stood out was the pricing as IIRC you get 20% off pick up/take out orders? Pricing being competitive as it is - that's a good deal.
We've been getting out sushi from Sushi House on Kingsway (Middlegate area - don't remember if I mentioned this already) and have been faithful ... but may have to order more from Top Gun to get a better read.

Tried Ebi few nights ago.
Menu changed somewhat. quality of food was good, but where was the UNI??
Considering many AYCE in Vancouver, I don't think I will go back again. They used to have a better menu than others, but now most places changed thier menu like Ebi, so basically you can have whatever anywhere else.
I pay 2 dollars less and have exactly the samething elsewhere. (including prawn tempura, raw oysters, hamachi sashimi, and best of all UNI sushi!!)
Is not worth the wait.

I went to Top Gun Sushi in the Westminister Quay Market today for lunch and they have some special where you add $1 to the price of the all you can eat lunch and you get all you can eat tuna and salmon sashimi as well. For lunch, it's $9.95 or $10.95 with all you can eat T & S sashimi. You also get a parking validaiton for an extra hours worth of free parking (2 hours total) when you park at the market lot on Front St.

I went to Shi Sha Ya in Metrotown today with my friends. I thought the food was ok...It took a while for them to deliver our food and my friends and I were really pissed off that it took a while for them to give our food. Plus they seem to have a problem speaking English. We all had trouble understanding what they were talking about and we even joked around and mocked them. Yea, I know that was mean, but the amount of time that it took for them to deliver our food today was unbelieveable. Anyway I don't think I'll ever visit that place again and believe it or not, I think Taisho is better :p.

Well, I just had to chime in about something that happened to me a month back or so.
The wife and I got serious food poisoning that lasted almost a week. It was brutal. The runs and upset bowels (ring of fire - had to use baby bum cream and it worked well too) but no other symptoms other than that. When I didn't have to go to the washroom I felt fine.
We traced it to Top Gun Sushi at the Quay ... i'd hate to insinuate that we got it from their takeout but it was the only thing that we had that we didn't control. Seeing that us adults had particular foods there and the kids had other stuff (but they didn't get sick) made us believe that it was a Top Gun product that did us in.
I've heard about mayo going bad in some Cali rolls that may cause food poisoning ... and we did have Cali rolls ... but i'm not exactly sure what it was.
So, that's my experience for what it's worth.

i once got really sick from sushi-ya on broadway. we ordered some bento boxes, and there was beef teriyaki as one of the dishes. it wasnt even real meat, it was the scraps with all the fat around it. was so hungry so ate some but couldnt finish the rest. girlfriend complained to the waitress, she didnt give a crap, got some free ice cream and that's all. she said the manager wouldnt do anything else.
after going to sleep, i spent about 5 hours back and forth between the washroom and bed, vomiting and diarrhea. i will never go back there again.

Just to let you know there's no more all you can eat at 'I Love Sushi' in Richmond. >:(
We went there yesterday and the place was empty at dinner time so that migh have been a clue to it's disappearance. We ended up at a Halloween themed Richmond Sushi instead.

For dinner the other night, we went to 'Fish on Rice', a new AYCE restaurant that is located where the old Kamei Sushi was in Burnaby. It's the one that's right above Earls. Right now, they have 10 percent off and all the pop you can drink as well. Dinner was $21.95 before the discount.
Apparently, desert is also included but it wasn't on the menu. Since we saw that some of the other tables were getting bowls of mango and green tea ice cream so we decided to ask if desert was part of the deal and surprisingly it was!!
Overall, it was pretty good and the menu choices are comparable to E. bei and Richmond Sushi.
You can also order the prawn tempura just by itself (no veggies) and they have items such as the following: beef sashimi, tuna tataki, scallop cones, raw oysers, oyster motoyaki, seafood motoyaki, and black cod.
I've scanned their menu/order sheet if anyone wants to take a look at it.

When I visited Vancouver last year, my friend took me to Richmond Sushi, I thought it was quite good, although a bit expensive. And some of the waitresses were pretty!

Having lived in TO and moved to Van...I have no idea why people would eat AYCE in Vancouver. The sushi in Van is way better then sushi in TO (Not AYCE). There are hidden gems of non ayce restaraunts in Van that will satisfy you without breaking the bank. I only eat at a few japanese restaraunts and almost never at an AYCE unless i'm forced to because it's someone's b-day or something.
Toshi is a great restaraunt on Main and 16th. It's only open 5-10 and closed sunday and monday though. You have to get there at 4:30 and start lining up. You must have all your party members there or else your not getting a seat.
Takara Bune on Victoria near 49th, by the churches is great non AYCE.
For AYCE, I've only been to:
Shabusan:
It's ok. The sushi is average with nothing special on the menu. Added bonus is you can order korean bbq with no extra cost.
Fish on Rice:
Average at best. Cookie cutter AYCE restaraunt.
Kingsway Sushi:
Was pretty good. Above average. Sushi was big without the gobs of rice.
Sui Shi Ya:
Horrible. I have no idea how this restarunt stays in business.

I think you're talking about Tanpopo ... it's relatively mediocre but great location. It's on the second floor. Very popular so service is a bit spotty ... but I guess I should slag the place considering how busy it can get. It's been a long, long time since i've been there though so can't say what it's like now.

I love posts like this. Thanks guys
Although not all you can eat, I like Suishi Garden's food in Metrotown. The only problem with it, long lineups and the staff isn't very friendly.
I love Octobus Garden in Kits, but it's pricey.

You would have loved it 10 years ago! Sada changed the operating philosophy in order to keep his sanity and still make a living. It seems to be working great even though I miss the days of more "reasonably" priced food.

All you can eat is overrated
Id rather pay $20 for awesmoe sushi then 15 all u can eat or mediocre
that being said
Tokyo Miyako, Granville and davie downtown vancouver
sashimi that melts in your mouth so good
Also try the rapture roll
youll be jaw dropped when u see it
and then jaw dropped when u taste it
