I've seen various posts here saying that RFD is mainly populated with young asian males (i.e. high school or university.)
Is this a true representation, or just an exaggeration?

Perhaps more so than the general population, but it is an exageration.

Most of the stuff I've sold/bought from BST, has been primarily young asian men, probably in excess of 90%. You can interpret that any way you like.

Search for polls; they've been done for almost every stat so far.

That would seem to be the case. Certainly, there are more males than females - numerous polls, and general trends on the internet show this. As for age, well, there certainly are some immature posters - so I would say the forums tend towards youth as well. Asian, probably - there seems to be an unusual inclination of some people to post threads specifically for/about asian people.. as well, all of the people who I have met through this forum (very few, actually) are asian.

Off topic scews everything of course.
We don't collect stats on race, but our own stats point to a 60% male, 40% female population and external audits, suggest it's 50/50. If this seems counter-intuitive, consider that women are less inclined to reveal their gender on the Internet (for any number of reasons) and at least on this board, Asians seem more inclined to reveal their ethnicity.
The biggest factor is probably that RFD has a strong Toronto readership and Toronto is the most ethnically diverse place in Canada.

I wonder how many RFDers are over the age of 45.....being an "old timer", I have enjoyed the deals and reading the forums.

I'm not a young asian male, but I am a young male.
Who's primarily the Internet generation and who's really running it?
Young men / Young asian men.
No bias or stereotype there, it just is what it is.
There's a lot of great deals on here so ... maybe I'll thank somebody!

in my opinion, white people tend to be more willing to spend more for extra service or convience
while chinese people will take abuse as long as its a cheaper price lol
canada computers is proof
and younger people are just more tech savvy, so it makes sense
chinese kids spend more time on the computer, we're geekier

I agree, strong Toronto readership is one of the biggest reasons for the asian demographic. Considering how many GTA stores are asian owned and run, there must be a large asian demographic market out there who they cater to. In any case, why does it matter if there are alot of asians on this board? I think it's great how multifaceted this forum can be with people being able to interact with one another regardless of color or race. And when it comes to selling, business is business. On a personal note, I've met a good mix of individuals of various backgrounds. In fact out of 40 something people I've met through this board, just less than a quarter of them were asian... but maybe that's just me.
On another note, Wow.. 60% male 40% female?? Get out! haha~ The general feeling I got was something closer to 85% male 15% female, with active posters anyway.

I wouldn't beleive the 60/40 male/female. Anyone can post anything in a poll. Everyone I've dealt with has been asian but that doesn't mean much. Well maybe it does. I dunno. Does this matter anyways?

Same.
95% Asian (yellow/brown)
5-10% of those being female.
The other 5% being white male.
Plus people going after the same deals that I am in b&ms just happen to be young asians as well and most likely from RFD.
I don't think its too much of an exaggeration.

Well ComScore, which is like the Neilson ratings for the Internet, says that our readership is actually 50/50 and our numbers are from our annual survey that had over 7500 responses.
Because the perception is that it's male dominated, there are many female users who don't identify themselves as such, and there are also females who perhaps have identified themselves somewhere but since they don't have a "girly" avatar or name, you just assume they are guys.
You also have to remember that there are subcommunities within the site as well. There is a different group of people who visit the main page, there is a different group in Freebies, a different group in Off Topic, a different group in the BST and so on. It's not inconceivable that the BST is more Asian male dominated than the other sub groups.

Speaking of Neilson Ratings.............
I have to rate RFD as a Liberal Friendly, Toronto-Centric, majority AZN forum; at least off topic.
I bring in that refreshing perspective from outside of those stereo hi-fi types.
