View Full Version : Credit Card Theft from Dime Magazine CC Processor?

I just checked my online CC statements and it shows over $8000CAD of unauthorized charges.

The CC that I used to subscribe was brand new, less than 1.5 months old.

Dime Magazine is the only unverified place where I used my CC to purchase items. I don't know if it is Dime Magazine's CC payment processor or Dime Magazine employees, but someone used my CC and address info.

The only other places that I used my CC was at brick and mortor WalMart and Canadian Tire. And both times, I watched them pass my CC through the card reader.

Can someone who also purchased from Dime Magazine check their online CC statements to see if they are clean?

Ouch...I thought something was fishy about that site...

I suggest you post in the Dime Hot Deals thread as well.

could be any number of reasons, could've been any of the retailers, stolen statements, etc.

Guy probably has some kind of spyware trojans or a keystroke monitor.

Data was sent to whomever, inside just happened to be the credit card # as typed out to the website.

Could be the website, but more likely it's not.

For my CC, the first unauthorized purchase was made Feb 20. Since it takes two days for transactions to appear online for me, I would have only seen it on Feb 22. From Feb 20 to Feb 23, there was a total of $8000CAD of unauthorized charges.

Also, I used my own secure computer when I purchased from Dime Magazine. There are no trojans, key loggers, etc. on my computer

Obviously if you knew you had one, you would do what is required to have it removed.

I only used the CC at the B&M WalMart and Canadian Tire and both times, I watched them pass my CC through the card reader.

Also, since this is a new CC, they haven't even sent out the first statement yet.

True, but I'm pretty good at keeping my network secure.

WinXP SP2 with all the updates. Automatic Updates is always turned on.
AVG AntiVirus
Zone Alarm software firewall
USRobotics hardware firewall
Ad-Aware SE Personal

So if someone was able to get a virus/trojan on my PC, then yah, they're pretty good.

Why are there updates? Is it because they later discover new vulnerabilities in which systems have been exploited? ;)

If you can eliminate the B&M stores (likely), and if no other users have been taken advantage of by the magazine secure server website (or whatever).. and there is no other place you've used the card...

I don't see any other possibility than you've been compromised.

Have you contacted your CC company yet?
And explained the situation?

Can they help you in this matter?

Yes, I have contacted the CC company. I have cancelled the CC.

M/C told me that yesterday someone called them pretending to be me. They were trying to change my contact info but they didn't know the verbal password that is on the account. The thief was only able to change the telephone number.

M/C said they are going to send out a form where I can select the charges that I am disupting (i.e. the unauthorized charges) and then they are going to issue a chargeback.
