Europeans don't get much 'real' maple syrup over there. I know, it's totally a cliche - but they'll love it! I know some euro friends that go nuts on the stuff when they come over to visit.

My vote is for maple syrup too - they can get smoked salmon from Norway. Europeans love it and will give them something other than ketchup to eat with their pancakes!

depends on whether any of the famiglia have lived in canada before...
...when i was visiting a canadian friend in london, she had strange but specific requests: cheez-whiz, red licorice nibs, triscuts... and i also threw in montreal-style bagels (it had ocurred to me afterward that i might have been able to make a small fortune bringing over a huge suitcase of bagels and selling them to the canada shop in covernt garden!)
something else people might like is peanut butter... it's hard to find in europe.
cheers,
michael

I normally bring people maple syrup filled chocolates, the ones that are shaped like maples leaves.
(I just noticed the OP is probably already in Italy...)

We are but a primitive tribe of savages to the Europeans - bring them an open mind and learn from the sophistication of their advanced culture.

OHHH..i TOTALLY agree with the peanut butter thing..that its REALLY hard to find in europe..especially in italy. only NUTELLA exists..seriously! i was madly craving for peanut butter while i was in europe during the summer.
anyways, i suggest bringing seafood (its possible!)...my parents brought lobster once, you just have to get a permit from the airport authorities and store them in a little foam box with ice. the cabin crew will keep it in the fridge for you...since you'll be in vancouver, i would go with crabs! yummerz!
