View Full Version : Should I take action against this Staples manager?

Action, not as in legal action, but getting in contact with their H.O. Im not even sure if they would do anything about it, since I've read so many negative stories.
Yesterday. I went into the Staples where I bought a laptop 17 days ago, to get a refund since it was overheating. Had, they had another one I would have just changed it, but they didnt. I called the Friday prior, to make sure it was ok to go in a few days over their 14 day refund policy since I was out of town for the long weekend. The guy said it was fine.
So I go in, immediately this lady supervisor/mgr walks up and right from the get go, was a complete b!tch, I could just tell her walking up with an attitude. I told her the situation, and she wasn't going to give me my money back because it was 3 days over. I was polite the whole time, while she was just being a b!tch with me. She kept saying that I was making it up, and that her workers know better than to tell customers its ok to return stuff over the policy. Oh puhleez, give me a break. So finally, she said I could refund. I dont see the big point of this at all, I was quoted I could, so even though your worker made a mistake you have to live up to your promise.
I happened to pay most of it in cash at the time ($1100), she said she didnt have enough and all the could come up with is $100 (YA RIGHT!). I know this was a load of *****. She then comes up and gives me even more attitude out of nowhere, saying how she can give me a voucher with the remaining $1400 on. I was like F that, ya right! Put it on my debit. She got really rude, and said she couldnt. When I asked why, she just looked up to the ceiling and ignored me. How rude is that. So I kept saying hwo I want it on debit and F the voucher. I said, I wasnt going anywhere until I get my full refund. I dont care if it has to come out of her right ear, left ear, I want it damn it. FInally, she had it with me so she got on the phone and was approved she can do it. I dont see the big deal here. If I paid debit and wanted cash, ok sure I can see why they wouldnt do it. But cash onto debit? Not like they are paying huge transaction fees.
So at the end, her attitude towards me got worse and worse. WHen everything was done, she told me to get out, while pointing to the door. She was asking why I was being such a prick about this all. I kept my mouth shut, I could have blown up on her and starting cursing, but it wasnt worth it. Im glad she had her enjoyment in swearing at a customer for doing nothing wrong. All I wanted was a simple refund and I was polite about it. But she immediately comes up with a "get out of my face" attitude. I told her that, and I will forward her comments and this experience to head office.

Learn your lesson.
The rule is 14 days, it's 14 days unless you get something else in writing.

This is about where the whole thing started to fall apart. Somehow I doubt that you were really *that* polite. And you might be the one who was carrying an attitude to start. Fact that you didn't get on the phone with that manager, she had every right to think that you were lying. You got your refund outside of the refund period, just move on

You should bring her a bouquet of flowers because you got your money back.
1. You were OVER the 14-day thing.
2. You weren't out of town for the weekend. He said he was going to lie about that, and there were two threads about that - one in Hot Deals and one in the Computer Section.

although some staples managers are in dire need of a refresher on customer service & staples' own policies... she handled your situation just fine.
* it's up to you to fulfill your responsibilities in your purchase contract. if a staples employee "says" bring it in 3 days later then write down their name & time of your conversation. ask the manager to confirm this conversation took place.
* staples WANTs your money, they don't have to refund once 14 days have passed. the fact she was willing to give you any refund means she's heads above most staples managers (and very tolerant might i add).
* if you wanted a better outcome then you need to pre-plan your conversation. is your request within staples' guidelines/policies? is it reasonable? what is an acceptable compromise to you? just thinking these 3 steps before returning your item will reduce your disappointment. knowing what to ask and when to ask for it will move your dialogue along.
if i handled your call at HO i'd think, "sir you received your refund when it's not our policy to do so. that's a gesture of goodwill to demonstrate we want your business, please come again."

You wanna bet? I went in, before work just asking for a refund and the CS clerk paged her. I didnt even say a single word to her and I could tell she had an attitude.
WHen I called, I did ask for the mgr, but they were on break I guess. I was in a hurry so I asked the dude who picked up. He said he was the dept. supervisor.

[personal observation] there's a staples at most major intersections within the GTA. you can take your laptop & receipt to the nearest location and ask for your refund. you may not like her attitude but you got what you wanted (i'm guessing this is the yonge & hwy 7 location). this is infinitely better than receiving it as Gift Cards and having to resell them on RFD for cash.

Most stores have a policy that if you pay by debit/cc your refund will be the same you can't change it.

You're lucky you got a refund in the first place. A 14-day policy is a policy and wether Bob at staples on the line told you it was OK to refund it 3 days after the 14 days, don't take his word for it. I would have said no, and that it didn't matter what someone else said over the phone. A policy is a policy and wether you're on vacation or whatever that's too bad.
Be thankful you got a refund at all.

Agreed, you were 3 days over the limit so as a policy, Staples didn't have to give you a dime. Head office would probably agree with the manager in this case about the policy but not with the attitude that she gave you.

Hell, if you bought a 70 grand car, then you realize there is a oil leak, and your 30 day period has passed, do you really think you are the one supposed to fix that problem? you just paid 70 grand, and you have to pay for repairs already? im sure some of you would be ranting on this forum for that very reason.............oh.....before you guys come with your lame excuse, " how can you compare that with a laptop"............shut up, dont wanna hear it, its the principle.
Now in the case if the laptop was fine, and he simply didnt want it again, is another problem all together. Buddy, its a good thing you got your money back. cause that 1000 dollar purchase would be a 2000 dollar laptop in the end after all repairs, trust me. oh...and wiating time is a bi**tch.

I've had funky experiences with Staples staff as well.
I went to by a 400 camera there a couple of days before christmas. 1 guy tells me theres a bunch in stock (3), but 1 of the more senoir staff says there isnt and kindly offers to check another store after I prompted him. He finds one, and then wants me to pay for it at the store and then pick it up 1 or 2 days later. I'm like, what? 'its ok, just tell me where it is and I'll pick it up' he would not tell me where it was, only that if i paid for it I "May" be able to get it before xmas. (the aroura store had stock) ..20 mins go by of waiting and being decent and patient.
I quickly realized he was scammming somehow. It was terrible, encrypted serivice, and I will not trust the store/staff in the future from my experience and witnessing bad scences at multiple locations.
The camera was in fact, in stock at that store. A new employee there was helpful probably because he hadnt worked there long and wasnt into scamming customers. I bought it and left. I look at staples and the staff differntly now..
Too much commision there maybe? and the staff becomes currupt.
OOS location: Eglington east/scarborough/ eglington and warden?
Hope it helps....

you said so yourself... over 14 day period... SOL.... take it up with the manufacturer if you have problems with the unit...
if the unit was acting earlier... then you should have returned it within the period, so why wait over the 14 days?
i mean this is >$1000 purchase here... i'd sure as heck want my laptop working and fine. but since you got past the 2 week period... i'll just assume you were quite alright with your purchase. 2 weeks is more than enough time to test a laptop. and now staples has a USED laptop in its stock...

Just to let you guys know, a few days over the stated return policy isn't a problem at all. In fact, we are instructed to say that for large sales such as laptops. So I'm not sure why that manager was being stupid, but then again this story is only coming from your side, no one else knows exactly what happened.

lots of people say the OP is out of line and what not (I actually agree) but I DO want to mention that this story just goes to show you how crap the big retailers have become. When I worked at SportChek in high school, the customer was always ALWAYS right. Returning items over the return deadline was usually not a problem. Nowadays I go into SportChek and sales clerks don't even make eye contact with me.
While I do agree the OP is lucky to have gotten a refund, I do think that the Staples manager needs some more training. In fact I suspect that Staples may have the worst manager training in existence.

I find it interesting that when the OP posted the thread ... that almost everyone condemn the OP that the OP got the money and should just move on ... because the fact that it was over the 14 day return policy ... what if the person was rude during returning the within the 14 day policy ... what would the RFD'ers say now ... We just heard one side of the story cuz it was only written by one side by the OP ... so we judge base on what we read ... but what IF the OP was telling the truth ... would we react on the side of staples ...
