if you're going to do local deals, it'd be best to meet at a neutral place and to pay in cash.

that way you get to inspect the item for yourself and the seller 100% gets the cash

in all honesty i wouldn't do EMT at all as it's too easy to get scammed off that

PAypal is a little better..but only slightly as it's easy to get scammed there as well

the best is a person to person trade

Don't do anyone any favours in terms of payment.

At the end of the day, it's your money.

Their a seller, so what ... what if they were the buyer, how would they react and what would they ask?

That's how I feel about it, but then again I don't scam people so I wouldn't know that end :P

Sorry to hear, that's not right. Believe in Karma, I do.

Contact the police. There will be records of his IP address and the electronic payment. Let him know you mean business. Press charges if you can.

Please list the steps you took to protect yourself.

Did you check users feedbacK?

I personally would've been satistifed with the prompt replied pms' but no feedback and no contact via telephone for ANYTHING OVER 100, is a nono for me.

Sorry, but I think you were a little loose in your trust.

HAS THIS USER BEEN ADDED TO THE SCAM LIST?

Yes I checked him out but not good enough I guess. I will be so cautious now.

Where is this scam list ?

Also , why has posts dissapeared from the thread I was scammed from ? This question is the one I want the answer for more then anything right now.

Like the next post says, you can delete your own posts. How many posts did the guys have that were reffering the seller? You gotta be careful that guys don't make multiple accounts so that they can "bump" themselves, etc. I've seen it before where 3 different guys are praising a new seller, and all the praisers have like 2 posts.

THIS is getting interesting.

So a $600 transaction goes smooth, and your car deck...370...not smooth?

question is then....WHY?

No not $370. The deck was $150 ........ I have lost a total of about $370 to scammers since I have been a member at this site.

Yeah, I wouldn't trash the site. It's the lowlives out there preying on people's trust. There are a ton out there so you just have to be careful.

I try get as much info from the person when I'm buying something from them. Phone number, Address (if out of Town), and e-mails. I say 95% of people on this site are pretty trustworthy and will never scam you, but you have to be careful of the 5%. A big big tipoff is EMT. Most sellers will either want to meet in person or go through different channels other than EMT.

Anyways, good luck finding a resolution. Going to the authrorities will not do anything unfortunately. 150 is somewhat immaterial (in their eyes, that's a lot of money personally).

Sucks to hear that there are people on this site that will scam you.

Hope you get this resolved. For me, anything over $100 means local pickup. You CAN get a great deal from people across the country but you also have to be prepared that things like this could happen as well.

This sucks, as RFD gets more and more popular, more and more of these threads are going to keep popping up.

It's sad that people will take advantage of a great site like this...

Unfortunately this is a very Toronto-centric website. Those in the GTA have the luxury of trading in person, but those of us in the boonies, or just plain out of province have to take these risks. It's unfortunate, due to the recent growth of RFD those that were here earlier and enjoyed the community and low amount of scams, are now becoming more and more cautious. (Obviously a wise action lately)

This will only get worse and worse.

Bump 'cause I feel for ya. I've been taken a few times, but all well under $100 and never here.

Always, always always, get the person's info, name address, phone number etc.
if they dont want to give it out, walk away.
if the person is new, give them a call, do a reverse look up to make sure the phone number matches the address.

Man, filer , again, i feel for you bro.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There are very VERY few cases when an honest seller wouldn't want you to know where he lives and what his name is. I have the luxury of living in Toronto and I still have been scammed in a local meetup situation when the seller just gave me a cell phone number and nothing else and I wasn't cautious enough.

Also, just like others mentioned there's nothing about this site to make it more secure than ebay/classified ads/garage sale/trading with timmy from 209A. :) It simply provides tools to connect sellers with buyers, there are bad people everywhere, this board is no exception.

And last but not least, IMO heatware is A VERY weak way of telling whether a person is trustworthy or not. Unlike ebay feedback, no one is oblidged to leave feedback after trading here, so if a trade doesn't go down too well, both parties are kind of interested in keeping it low and not getting neg. feedback. to their name.
