I have tried installing several different PCI cards including two USB 2.0 cards and a wireless network adapter. In every instance, a card in any of my 4 PCI slots will cause the computer to freeze. Usually, it freezes while Windows XP is loading. Occasionally, the desktop will appear but once the Found New Hardware bubble comes up, the computer freezes. I'm running an ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard. Any suggestions?

try installing them one at a time, and you might need to upgrade some drivers, i'm thinking that there might be some conflicts in your computer. but try one at a time first.

What Bios version do you have? One that is after 1007 i hope.
A7V8X-X BIOS 1007
Improve the stability with certain AGP 4X cards.
Solve sometimes certain pci cards may not be detected.
If you have a sound blaster live or audigy card drivers installed you have to uninstall the drivers first before doing changes to pci devices.
Assign a IRQ number manually for the card at the bios.

The times that I have tried it have only been one at a time.
I just checked and found out my BIOS version is 1006 which is reallly old. Now, for BIOS updates, do I have to get versions 1007-1013 separately? Or will the latest upgrade cover everything?

Just download the latest version. After you flash your bios its a good idea to select reset the configuration data option in the bios.

Alright, I've upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (1013). After that I reset the BIOS config to default. I also tried manually assigning IRQ numbers (though I don't know if I did it right), all to no avail. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried removing all other installed cards and then installing each of the new cards alone? Just need video and HD to test.
Reset any overclocking to safe levels.
I would even try another video card (if you have one handy). I'm reading in other forums about the mobo having problems with AGP and other PCI cards.

I don't have any installed cards other than my video card and I don't have another one available. Also, I haven't overclocked before.
