Hi,
Looking to travel late April for 3 weeks.
Any recommendations on best price for air fares and alternative airlines?
Thanks.

US based airlines will usually have deals below $1000 (tax-in; jan/feb price); but april might not work because of easter
try toureast.ca for quotes (lowest i see is C$1,017 *Tax included Asiana Airlines via chicago & seoul)

Sorry. One thing I forgot to mention... I'm trying to avoid using any airlines that go through US.
Don't want to go through the hassles of dealing with the US officials.

My dad left last month and paid $900 tax in CAD round trip to HK through continental. Passed through Chicago first. For the savings I wouldn't care about the U.S officials hassling you etc...

Cheapest airfare is always through the USA....
I understand what you mean by oging through the US..they check everything including what type of underwear you wear and they dont want you to lock your luggages. I understand that they need to have high security, but they have have brought it on to themselves by getting the whole wolrd to hate them.
My brother and sister in-laws had items stolen from them....it was reported lost in transit at the transfer point and they got the bags about a week later...

As well, US customs will open ALL your checked in luggage. So do NOT lock them or they will just break the lock and probably break your latch of the suitcase in the process. Which I don't like because someone else can easily open my suitcase in the process and take stuff.
Last time, they ripped open all my new blank CD spindles I bought. CDs scattered everywhere. Stupid customs.
Besides, Bin Laden says they will plan another attack, and you know what, I believe him. Airplanes are so easy to hi-jack, those cutoms are still a joke to me, as all those people screening the carry on bags look like low paid people to me, they don't give a **** about anything.
Even if they catch 99% of the bad stuff, there is still 1% they miss. 1% of the total number of people going thru customs is a lot of potential hi-jackers. I highly doubt their track record is as good as 99% to begin with. CNN did a study after 9/11 and many of their "fake" dangerous items got thru customs on board.
So, I agree with OP, avoid USA if possible. Spend a little more, better piece of mind. No one planned on 9/11 that their planes were going to be hi-jacked, they just did their normal thing flying thru USA.

Korean Airlines flies toronto-seoul-hong kong...i think there's a 1 nite stopover either one the way to HK, or back...check flight times when u book
That's usu the 2nd cheapest option besides US airlines

Thanks. Thats what I was looking for - the 2nd Cheapest option (not considering the US based flights).
I don't mind paying a little bit extra to have a more comfortable and "civilized" trip.
Just thinking of going through US customs gives me stress.
I will look into Korean Airlines.... today. :cheesygri

If you don't want to fly thru the U.S., an option is to fly Air Canada direct from Toronto to Hong Kong, it's the shortest flight time available at approx. 14 hours. I booked tickets for my Mom and my Bro on on AC15 (direct from YYZ to HKG) for end of April and they are paying $1375 CAD each including taxes. It's not cheap but the flight is almost full - it is a very popular time to go back to Hong Kong as that's when some of the Universities finish their exams. I believe Cathay Pacific costs even more.
Trust me, it's better to fly direct than to go through the U.S. or Vancouver, my Dad got stuck in a LONG line-up in Vancouver customs and missed his flight back to Toronto. And we all know about the U.S....

Agreed, I booked a flight in September but stopped by Japan for a week then went to Hong Kong and flew directly back from there. Seeing how the flight is so long, about 14 hours, the last thing I wanted to do was kill more time stopping over and waiting in another airport and then switching planes. My friends did it once and said that it was both mentally and physically exhausting, I think after all was said and done, they pretty much wasted 24 hours flying, stopping over, waiting and switching planes.

I know someone who did this. Stopped Seoul for like 6 hours, got to see the airport from early morning. Exhausting but save you money. But you get to eat Korean airfood and Korean flight attendants. He also said that "pretty" is a requirement to work for Korean Airlines. ;)

If you have frequent flyer status (star alliance gold or whatever), then stop overs aren't so bad because you can use the airport lounge to take a shower, surf the net, load up on food & alcohol etc.

I flew Korean Air when I went a few years back.
Toronto - Seoul - with 2 meals, one dinner and one "breakfast" and of course, I sat at the very back and made small talk with the attendants and they gave me instant noodles and extra food. They don't charge for beer, pop or wine either.
You land in Seoul about 3 - 4am and the first flight to Hong Kong at 8am-ish you are outta there. I spent that 5 hours playing with their airport TVs and watching StarCraft battles and Sumo Wrestling on TV :)
Plane trip cost about $1100 flying out end of August.

:cheesygri So true, so true.
If you hear the Co-Captain say "Today, we have an experienced flight crew to attend to your needs...."
Translation: "Today, we have a bunch of really really old ladies serving ya, so you better behave and take what we give ya, or they'll smack ya like your grandma does"

Hi,
Seeing how this thread got bumped again, just to update you on my decision.
Found out that Korean Airlines had a promotion for flights booked before the end of Feb 2006 (that's when I was looking).
Booked with them for $1230 all taxes in.
Yes stopover at Seoul for 5-6 hours in the morning. But I don't really mind. The money I saved on the three tickets can buy me some decent "comfort lobster dinners". :D
Good luck to the others looking.
PS. At the time of my searching for airfare, UA had a deal for less than CA$900 to Hong Kong... but I passed. :cheesygri

That's a good price, at least if it is for the summer. I got CAD1350 for the summer HK-Toronto nonstop on AC.
