i would like to get an external hdd to use as media storage so i can stream video (xvid, mpg) to my xbox. what would be the best drive + external case for this?

the drive is going to be on 24/7 so i need one with good cooling and a large drive that does not get hot. also is there any need in using 7200RPM hdd?

because you are streaming using the xbox's ( assuming xbox and not xbox360) network card your max speed would be 10 MB\s to stream there would be no real point in buying a 7200 because it would never access fast enough to ultilize it . since there isnt really a price difference for a 5400 to a 7200 its more user preference to which you would buy .

as for exclosures i would suggest one of those exclosures with a fan that is also able to hold a dvd drive as well . they most often have lots of air circulation for yuor hd and rarely over heat with the fans they have.

Could have sworn that the NIC on the XBOX was 10/100.

spm24 said 10MB/s, which is almost 100Mbps ;)

although i dont get how an external harddrive directly connects to an xbox...

My old eyes couldn't see the big "B". :)

I don't understand the ext HD part either. Even with a modded USB port on the HD, I don't recall XBMC being able to use it.

Why don't you add a bigger harddrive onto your XBox. Then you can ftp to your XBox harddrive and make a folder called "media". If you know Samba, you can map "media" folder as X:\ drive on your computer.

Another option maybe is to get one of those external enclosures that have an ethernet connection and run it straight off the network.

Edit: Something like this could work: Bytecc Landisk (http://www.byteccusa.com/product/enclosure/ME-850.htm)

there was once a free program out there that did that for you . it would make your xbox hd X: and the dvd rom z: so you can drag and drop files into it or set up a sync program to run from it.

there is a tutorial here (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/map-xp.php)

I think these are great if you have multiple computers. Its basically a harddrive with a built-in a samba and ftp server for transferring files. i think maxtor makes them too.

Its nice that you don't have to have keep your computer on to get access to your files.

as long as it supports samba (i.e. windows shares), then xbmc will be able to stream right off it (i.e. no need to "map" drives and copy files)

Ah. Out of room inside the PC, or just looking for more versatility? If the latter, then no need to cheap out, get the fastest (ie. 7200rpm) drive you can get.

And woops, I meant to say "modded USB port on the XBOX" not "on the HD". :)

I've been doing it with a 2.5" 60gig 5400RPM drive via USB 2.0 enclosure for the past year and a half. Been working great for the streaming even when heavy downloading to the drive at the same time.

Benefits:Works off of USB power, no adapters needed. Extremely portable. Throw it in my jacket pocket when I want to share stuff with friends or family.
