because Global broadcasts in HDTV and have the rights for the Canadian broadcast. They say simsub it, it gets simsubbed.

as a side note, both shaw and starchoice are not simsubbing... lol

And I believe theres a crtc regulation that stipulates if you dont have an OTA signal, you cant simsub, and globalHD does NOT have one....

ANyone in ottawa/london confirm/deny that their detroit ABC signal is NOT being simsubbed?

on the HD abc detroit channel?

I know for a fact that all normal SD channels are being simsubbed, as its been in the past, but this is new for HD.

Shaw doesn't carry GlobalHD (does Starchoice?)
My understanding is that its not a OTA requirement, its a requirement that the network can demand their signal is simsubbed over the US version as long as their version is the same video quality.
Would assume if by next year Shaw carries GlobalHD, then the US HD feed will be simsubbed by Global.

Ive heard that too, unfortunately seeing as ABCHD is 720p, and global is 1080i, the same signal quality should also be thrown out, as global now has to convert it. Dont think global really cares anyways.

It really does suck though.. oh well.. :-(

When you watch American Idol of Fox, yet you are seeing Canadian commercials, thats simsubbing.
The network that has the Canadian broadcast rights of the show has ordered the broadcaster to overlay their networks broadcast of the show over the US networks feed.
In the case of American Idol as an example, it means whether you watch Global or Fox, you see the same Canadian commercials.

No one ever cares, except for Superbowl time :)

I do, there has been lots of time when one show is subbed, and then the next shows are different but whoever is in charge of switching it back doesn't do it till the different show is half over, its a BS policy.

And seeing as HD is its infancy in Canada, and HD canadian channels screw up ALL THE TIME, the crtc made new rules for HD simsubbing... Too bad rogers doesnt feel need to obey them.

Definitely worst looking PQ of any HD football game Ive seen. Go Rogers! Go Global!

To avoid this entire mess do what I did: Watch it using an antenna. You can pick up the direct broadcast from FOX Buffallo. All without having to pay and all in HD :D

I mentioned Buffallo because it's where I get my signal. U mad? Southern Ontario is not the only place in Canada where you can get OTA HD. There's people in your neck of the woods that get it too: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=41173&page=3

Not mad, no. It's just not a viable avenue for the vast majority of us outside southern Ont. (due to the mountains for us out here, distance from the border for the rest) Not that you can't get it out here, but you have to be at a certain elevation in certain areas to get US stations consistently, if at all. Downside of living in a mountainous area.

Yeah, as far as the US commercials are concerned, simsubs on the Superbowl don't matter much anymore.

I noticed a few weeks ago when watching the seahawks games that they weren't simsubbing (I didn't realize before now that there was a term for this :) ), over the US network feeds.

Therefore yesterday we got to watch the superbowl with the US ads for probably only the 2nd time I can remember (friend of mine had some directtv thing going on a number of years ago and he pulled a us network via satellite).
It was nice, and PQ was very solid.

I'm on Shaw in Edmonton btw, I hope shaw doesn't have to subsim next year, its always bugged me, no matter what they're simsubbing.
