View Full Version : sick and tired of rogers rental ad

Can you guys get rid of the rogers rental ad? It's been there for about a decade and it's annoying. Put something useful in that top spot.. or at least open the commenting system for that ad so that you can read what people really think (my suspicion is that the general consensus will be "nobody rents dvds so who cares"). I can't be the only one who feels this way. I'm all for RFD getting sponsored, but at least put the ads out of the way of the real content... please?

A guy with one post is complaining about an ad being there "for a decade?" Heck, I don't even see the ad you're talking about. Plus, like it's been said, there's always firefox.

Would you like to pay hundreds of dollars every month for the servers to run this site? Didn't think so.

Gimme a break. The users are what makes this site worthwhile. You could duplicate it in a few hours by tweaking an existing free CMS system. I click on enough affiliate links here to choke a donkey as it is, so I guess I already am paying. I'm not asking to get rid of ads completely anyway. I'm talking about the stale, boring "deal" posted almost a month ago.
Install Firefox and the Adblock Extension.
Problem solved for you.
I'm already running that. I'm talking about the Sponsored Deal. Ads masquerading as content, not true banner ads.

I guess I have to build up a few hundred posts of blind praise before I'm allowed to express a negative (arguably negative that is) opinion. The "decade" comment was an obvious exaggeration. For your benefit, I will clarify: "It's been there for about 29 days and 20 hours and it's annoying."

Do you think that having a sponsored deal that is at least interesting would hurt the site? Do you think that rotating the sponsored deal more frequently than "monthly" would hurt the site? Either of these changes would more than likely INCREASE the number of affiliate clicks thereby increasing the site's income. If you read my original post carefully you will see that i am a proponent for fresh content in addition to RFD obtaining sonsors (advertisers). I never asked for a complete removal of ads from the site. I DID request that ad content be better separated from actual content, and I stand by that. Making ads look like real content is misleading. The end users are the meat and potatoes of this site, and without them there would be no advertisers at all. They should be catered-to above and beyond anyone else.

Sponsored = Advertisement, always has.
It's a paid position and apparently it's working for the advertiser well enough that they want to keep it running as it is.

"Blind praise?" I never said I wanted that. Your first post EVER here was just you b1tchin' and whining. You have contributed NOTHING to this forum except acting like a little brat. RFD is a community. The adolescent whiners get ignored for the most part. Contribute, earn other's respect, and then maybe your cries won't fall on deaf ears.
Oh, welcome to Red Flag Deals :D

I never stated (or even hinted) that sponsored does not mean advertisement. In fact I started the thread with a statement that implies that a sponsored deal IS an ad. My main point was that the ad in question is stale content that I am tired of. I opened a discussion, and if no one else is tired of seeing the same sponsored deal for a month then that's fine. Just say that you aren't tired of that ad and stop putting words into my mouth.
Regarding my stance on ads masquerading as content, I stand by my opinion that it is misleading. Again, I'll point out that I have not once said that there should be no ads at all.
It may be working fine for the advertiser but is it working for the users? I don't have an answer for that since I can only speak for myself. I thought that some others might have an opinion regarding this particular ad and about ads-as-content, but I guess not. Just blanket opinions along the lines of "ads are necessary", none of which address my original post.

True, you did not say "Blind Praise" and I apologise for making the implication. But I ask you to consider the possibility that I have been clicking affiliate links on this site for years (I have), and that I have added constructive comments to the "deal" posts in the past (I have). The fact that I have never posted on the discussion forums does not mean that I have just arrived to the RFD community!

Fair enough. I'll consider that possibility. Though, I question the "constructive comments" part. Unless posting in the Hot Deals section doesn't count towards one's post count (and I'm almost positive it does), a search for posts under your name returns no such thing to my computer:

But whatever. Have a good one here on RFD. :)

PS: I know some of you are thinking it so I'll save you some time: "Please do not feed the troll". If everyone thinks that the dvd rental ad is useful and necessary, I'll slink back into my cave and spend another month scrolling by it to get to the real content.

I'm talking about the comments section of each "deal" on the deals page (or what used to be the main page). Do those count as forum posts? Maybe those comments are actually part of the forum system now, but for a long time I think it was just an article commenting system that required no forum registration. I haven't left a deal comment in some time so maybe it has changed.

You need to calm down a bit. My point is that it isn't content. It is an ad. The space was sold and after that, we don't have *that much* say as to the offers they will run as long as they are legitimate. They tried some other stuff before, but this one is working for them, so they've decided to continue running it. If people are tired of it, it won't convert for them and they'll either stop buying or they'll change the content.
We always identify ads with the sponsored tag. That's the policy. The rest of the deals are from people submitting them via email, forum posts, or from deals that our news editors come across while looking for deals in flyers, newsletters, etc.

I honestly don't even have a clue what this person is referring to.
Could someone post a screenshot or direct me to where I can see the content being referenced to?

That means you need to get out of the forum page more often

But the real deals come in the forum and often they don't last long enough to make it onto any main page.
There's also an extension for FireFox called "RIP - Remove It Permanently", that should get rid of any content that annoys a user.

I just don't want anyone putting words in my mouth. I expressed an opinion and was attacked for it by people who seemed to have not even read my entire post.

This makes some sense to me. If it is converting to dollars to them (and you), then I can see how my opinion that it is stale and useless to the end user is not shared by most browsers to the site (since they also make their opinions known with theur clicks). I still believe however that the fresher the content (including ads -- especially if they are shown in the style of content), the better it is for return visitorship. When the sponsored content first started showing up last year (or whenever it was), I didn't even scroll past it to the "real deals" because I thought that the sponsored deals were the most recent "real deals" and that everything "below the fold" so to speak was even older than that. The "SPONSORED" designation is much clearer now, which is good, but it's still disoncerting to see the same deal listed first for an entire month straight. However if you have no control over that space once it is rented out, then I'm clearly banging my head against the wrong wall.

Thanks for the Adblock idea.
I blocked every single RFD deal, including that annoying Satellite Radio Source picture :)

You're sure not doing Ryan and Derek any favours are you? The least you could do is view the ads that RFD makes money off of, you might just see something you like. If everyone did what you do, RFD would go under very quickly.

With the amount of good content here and the ease of moving through the site, I'm shocked that any user is unable to "get over" the presence of any ad, banner, image or sponsored deal on the site. You may have seen it a thousand times, you may see every time you enter the site or forums (especially if you spend way too much time here, like me). But most users do not, and as Ryan said, the continued existence of the ad indicates that it's worthwhile, not just for the advertiser and RFD BUT ALSO FOR THE USERS. If people weren't using it, it would be gone pretty damned quick. (Unless the advertiser is not keeping track of their impressions, and then tough titty for them)
Money will usually take care of itself.

I have never bought anything that was posted on RFD.
(So me viewing the ad would not help, plus I have no money).
I just post the pictures ;)
