Teams/bios are up.
Don't have any clear cut favorites (winning wise) that I can see right now, unlike the previous race where the Linzes from the start (young, relatively athletic) just looked like they had the best chances.

Season 8 never happened. Period.
Anyway, if you want to know where teams are going this year:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Race_9
Actually I'm a major contributor to the Race articles on Wikipedia... With the teams now posted, I already have an idea of who the Final 3 are, cuz they were spotted on the final leg by eyewitnesses.

Danielle & Dani  ;)
BJ and Tyler look to be the top team on paper
Both have traveled the world extensively and speak several languages including Spanish and Japanese.
Lisa & Joni - one has never been out of the US, and they both want to spend the million on plastic surgery. Should be some good moments

bj and tyler, if they can handle all of the physical challenges, should be a good team, imho: they speak a variety of languages, they are highly educated, and have traveled the world.
of course, sometimes that just doesn't translate to success in this game.
regardless, thanks for the post--i'm looking forward to seeing this season.

BJ & Tyler are not going to make it far...
They seem like the best team on paper and look like the lovable goofy team, but they've rarely been advertised in the commercials and trailers. In past seasons, likable teams that win usually get praise from Bert Van Munster (producer) or Phil Keoghan in the press. Like midseason in Season 5, Van Munster basically gave away Chip and Kim as the winners when he told the press that "viewers will love the ending to the season".
BJ and Tyler are going to be Philiminated fairly early. Lovable guys like Kevin and Drew or the Clowns were heavily featured in the previews, even though they got ousted near the end.

I guess we're all thinking along the same lines with BJ/Tyler...the travelling around the world/languages bit does stand out. Like afong said, if they're pretty good physically...but smarts do count for quite a bit so that's never a bad thing to have.
Eric/Jeremy...both athletes...brains will probably be their downfall.
Doesn't Desiree (daughter..far right team) look like a mix of Rachel Weisz/Mila Kunis?
Teams that don't look too impressive so far on paper: Lisa/Joni....David/Lori
Which teams will be the dysfunctional ones? I'm thinking Eric/Jeremy or John/Scott.

BJ & Tyler are bohemian best buds who first met four years ago during the Semester at Sea program, where they shared the experience of sailing around the world. One of their most memorable moments was starting a dance party in the streets of downtown Guilin, China, which turned into a mass gathering of hundreds of Chinese men. They have been friends ever since, whether bouncing on trampolines at Burning Man or spontaneously swimming in the San Francisco Bay.
BJ is a graduate of Harvard University, while Tyler graduated from UC Santa Cruz after completing two semesters abroad--one in Hungary, the other in South Africa. Both have traveled the world extensively and speak several languages including Spanish and Japanese.
Both BJ and Tyler share a love of adventure, travel, and good times. After graduating from college, BJ moved to California to pursue surfing, karate and frisbee. Meanwhile, Tyler fell in love with a Japanese girl and decided to impress her by walking the 2000-mile length of Japan.
Their primary motivation for taking part in THE AMAZING RACE is to share in the adventure of racing around the world, meeting new people and, of course, winning $1 million.
Hah, those guys seem like they really have accomplished alot though :-0 Sounds like fun.

what will make the show good is the types of detours, road blocks and the places they go.
To me, it a show about things I'll never get to do and places I'll never get to go to.

I know CTV is still on that so no spoiler here. But a few things
- The geek couple they are not. They are dorks!
- "I though Spanish is the universal language...?" Seriously, I thought it was Russian
- I know I'll be happy the day that the hippies get eliminated
- Oh yeah, and the sisters too
- I am surprised that they bar people from booking ticket over the phone. I don't think they should stop people from out-smarting their competitors.
Pretty good start of the series, but it didn't look *that* close so far. Not a lot of street-smart has been shown so far

I'd have to disagree with you there. I think they'll be around for awhile. Besides picking the wrong road block challenge they do have some intelligence. They were the first at the plane ticket counter and even though it didn't matter this leg of the race they were smart enough to ask which plane arrived earliest instead of just taking the earliest flight. Also there obvious 'assets' are going to make people more incline to help them. Remember the gay team getting no help with directions? You probably won't see that with team eyecandy. I'm routing for Team DoubleD :P

So what are the in-game nicknames so far? I have
Frosties, Ken-and-Barbie... anything else?
The intriguing pair so far for me is the mom-and-daughter team (the salsa dancing pair). No, not by their (in)ability, but by their comment during the intro about how they are ok that people think they are stupid and such. I think this pair will get a hefty amount of editing to show their stupid side throughout the game

I'm sorry, but I absolutely hated the constant screaming of the two mothers - Lisa & Joni. One of them was screeming in the helicopter. If I were the pilot, I would have kicked her off  . Stop screaming into the microphone lady!!
Although the public affection of the geeky couple was gross, it still wasn't as annoying as hearing the high pitched "EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!".

I thought the dentist (Lake) was horrid. He self-congratulates when he's successful (e.g., when he was able to complete the motorcycle challenge), but then shirks responsibility when he's wrong (e.g., when he said that he was only "partially responsible" for the mistake of calling and booking the airline tickets over the phone, when in fact it was HIS idea). Then he said that he would SHOW the older couple how to put together their motorcycle after he finished his, only to give half-baked advice like "Part A goes on top of Part B, then screw in Part C" (and the older couple had no idea part was what). He shouldn't have said that unless he intended to follow through.
Also, what was with his yelling of "Did a black couple just come by?" and "I think the black couple is behind us". Didn't sound like a nickname to me, more like some insensitive labelling.

Hi,
I actually thought that was pretty disgusting. You have to hand it to the team for staying focused on the task. Let's face it, you didn't have to speak Portuguese to know that those guys were saying some mighty disrespectful things. Didn't you think that, in general, the people we saw the teams interact with in Sao Paulo were pretty unfriendly? Like that team (the first eliminated team) where the guy was just asking for directions and no one would even acknowledge his existence.

I have a feeling the Pinks will *never* have trouble hailing a cab the entire race with their look. Although they did have trouble getting any Sao Paolo-ite to help them put together their motorcycle -- go figure.

I don't see Eric/Jeremy holding onto the lead...they'll be gone eventually. Don't really like them. Don't really care about TeamPink either...nothing against them but I just don't really like frat boys/sor girls type. There's still Mo and Desiree for eye candy. John and Scott...just never really seemed into it and weren't that interesting. I find the screaming sisters sorta amusing (the look on her face in the heli... )...praying to Jesus and screaming all the time. If they take it up a notch they'll move into "annoying" territory but for now it's OK.
Some people have been saying Lake is sorta racist for asking if the "Black team" has come by...I think it's just because he picked them as a marker to see if there's a team behind/ahead of him. It's sure easier than asking "did some White people come by?" Those 2 teams were close together so by knowing where they stood in comparison to them basically gives him an idea of where they are in the race. He is a bit on the crazy side (ala Jonathan, Colin, others from past races) but I don't mind him for now. The guys at the motorcycle shop made Brazil (and men) look bad...just like the groping Indian train rides. At least she shrugged it off as just male chauvinism
I think one of the older teams (FranBarry) or the screaming sisters will get the boot next. The only screwup (other than some teams wrongly choosing motor over rotor) was FranBarry missing the bloody clue so many times.

First off let me get a couple of things out in the open.
1. I'm glad the show's back to normal, that episode of The Amazing Race was just simply Amazing.
2. I'm rooting for Wanda & Desiree, even though I don't think they'll win.
Okay, now onto the teams.
I'm glad who ever got eliminated in this episode was eliminated, they got annoying really fast.
The "nerdy couple" are just simply so cute together.
Team Hippie and the frat boy team are just a little too gay at times IMO.
They really are 6 ft tall? I didn't believe it at first, but then when I saw how tall they were compared to other people, I had no choice but to belive it. Why are they called Team Frosty?
What are those white spots sticking to Lake and Michelle's necks? Nicotine patches? (We see signs that Lake might be a wife-beater in this episode).
In the future if I can experience a tenth of the love and happiness that Fran & Barry have, then I would consider myself as the luckiest man alive.
I wanna see team Pinkie a.k.a. DoubleD's move on only to see how far they think they can get with their 'prettiness'
About half way through the show, I realized why they were called team Mo Jo a.k.a Ken & Barbie.
I thought Ray was gonna fight those people hollering at Yolanda.
The first episode of each series is always my favourite one.

^ That round patch on the side of the neck is likely a motion-sickness patch - you see rally-drivers wear them all the time (cos they have to read while in a moving car). Amazing race is all about travelling and going on planes 'n stuff so no better place to see a motion sickness patch than on this show!
Couple of q's/comments:
1) anyone know the name of the amphitheatre that they started at near Denver? Looked kinda cool all the way up there in the hills. Wouldn't have thought it would have been the main concert place for Denver because it was quite high up and would be cold at night..
2) the guy's that got eliminated - gay couple, or 1 gay guy, 1 *really* good friend? The guy that was not a complete flamer seemed to make a pretty specific point of saying (they're really close friends) 'and that's all!' or something like that during the introductions - indicating "hey, PLEASE don't get the wrong impression about me!". Regardless, it was funny how the flamer seemed to be the dominating one, but at the same time was giving 'final say' to his friend. Loved it when flamer said "tut... oh my gawsh.. would you just make a decision already? jeez..." -- and his pal says "I DID. I said let's stay in the damn taxi!" :D
3) Are yellow shirts the sign of a marriage in trouble or something?! ;)
In a previous season, we had 'Yellow-shirt', aka: husband-from-hell Jonathon.
This time the wife is wearing the yellow shirt, but the husband is a real prick!
4) Screamers.. "I pee'd my pants!! I peed my pants!"
Did she really? The camera cut after the first scream and she could still be heard in the background saying(shouting?) more quietly something like "oh my god.. i seriously pee'd my pants!" - and then in the next few scenes whenever we saw her running she was holding a bag or her fanny-pack in front of her.
Wishful thinking.. or did she really do it?!
5) the 'old' couple -- during the intro - "we're in great shape so we're counting on that to be one of our strengths". Yeah, right. Maybe if the other competitors were 80! But most are in 20-40 years younger than you.. anything you can do, they can do better! Wife reminded me of that annoying old screamer from a previous season - remember the one that fell in the cave and cracked her head?.. the same one that sat on top of that wooden elephant that needed to be pushed through some Indian city .. screaming all the while her tired old husband pushed it (and her). WTF was with standing there gawking at the motorbike for 30 seconds? Look at the 'model' they were given and get to work, woman! "Spark plugs go in the engine?.. I don't even know what an engine is!" ....Oh.. I almost forgot - they ran past the clue-box on the bridge what - 4, 5 times without seeing it? And each time the cameraman stopped and turned...'um..guys... pay attention to me!?'. haha -- hopeless! Please spare me and get booted off next week!
6) Despite all the problems some teams had, it was surprisingly close at the end all the way through the pack. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the producers have finally got some changes in store for us with team start times/destination opening-times/flight times, etc - so that teams can't catch up part-way through the legs as easily as they've been able to in previous seasons.
7) Those taxi drivers and other Brazilians they encountered must be sick of Americans (and other foreigners) speaking in Spanish. 'Thank you' is 'obrigado', yet how many times did we hear 'gracias'??!!!
8) Hey, anyone else notice that while the teams were in taxis going from the airport to the Hotel Unique (http://www.hotelunique.com.br/) in Sao Paolo they travelled on the 'Rodovia Ayrton Senna' (Ayrton Senna highway). That was cool to see - Ayrton was born in Sao Paolo and the city pretty much shut down after his death in 1994. I was hoping the contestants would get to visit his grave in the Cemitério do Morumbi - but no go. Oh well..

Barry and Fran Lazarus (left), contestants on the upcoming season of “The Amazing Race,” will no doubt have their own cheering section in the McDaniel community when the first show of the ninth season airs Feb. 28 on CBS.
Lazarus, a retired urologist and graduate in the class of '64, and his wife dove from an airplane, bungee-jumped, and scaled buildings in their attempt to beat 11 other couples in the 30-day race across five continents. Although the race is finished, the results are top secret until revealed on television in the course of the season.
At every destination, each team competes in a series of challenges – some mental and some physical – and only when each task has been completed do they learn their next destination. Teams that are farthest behind are eliminated, and the first team to arrive at the final destination wins $1 million.
George Gebelein, 1964 class president, takes some responsibility for bringing the Lazarus’ together. The couple had their first date at his house in the early '60s, and they remain friends four decades later.
“The fact that Barry and Fran are going to be on this show is awesome for me and may be the pinnacle of the fantastic adventures Barry and Fran have experienced during their lifetime,” Gebelein says. “I am excited and so proud of them. The suspense is unbearable.”
The couple, now living in Colorado, is keeping details of the show mum for now, but their friend Marsha Cooper says they were thrilled to be picked for “The Amazing Race.”
“Competing with so many younger people was challenging in the physical viewpoint, but the mechanics were probably easier for them,” Cooper says. “They were very excited and called it a life-altering experience. They talk about the friends they have made and say they’ve been surprised in ways they didn't expect.”

Most of the locations on the Race have already been spoiled, since they're shown in the opening credits. For example, they showed the Brazilian motorycle wheelie scene twice in the premiere: once in the opening credits, and again when describing the Rotor Head Detour. So, if you have a good sense of geography, you'll recognize most of the locations in the intro.
Producer Bert Van Munster and host Phil Keoghan have already revealed all the new countries visited this season...
They're not really keeping much in secret in their interviews, because they want viewers to come back to the show with the dip in ratings last season.
The only real spoilers from past seasons were online betting patterns on Race results at Sportsbook.com. Betting was prematurely closed for the past three seasons, due to heavy wagering on certain teams... namely the ones who ended up winning. For some reason, there hasn't been anything odd in the online betting scene this season. For once, maybe CBS actually enforced their confidentiality agreements.
Here are the current odds for the remaining teams at bodog.com
Jeremy Ryan & Eric Sanchez 3/1
Yolanda Brown-Moore & Ray Whitty 3/1
BJ Averell & Tyler MacNiven 2/1
Barry Lazarus & Fran Lazarus 5/1
Monica Cayce & Joseph Meadows 7/1
Desiree Cifre & Wanda Lopez-Rochford 7/1
Michelle Garner & Lake Garner 7/1
Dani Torchio & Danielle Turner 8/1
Joni Glaze & Lisa Hinds 12/1

if you think those older huge chicks are good lookin, i don't want to know who you think is really hot.
those older ladies are so annoying, always screaming and making asses of themselves, crave attention, and get in in the wrong way. if i had to put up with that during the race, i would probably get kicked off pretty early for slapping them in the face
monica is definately the hottest contestant in this version of the race, the double ds are alright, but one of them has a really bad american accent which is not the biggest turn on in my book
the older couple must be the stupidest couple on the race. how many times did they walk past the clue marker? and then when they saw it, they were like "They must have moved it, it wasn't hear before" Whatever. If i was that ladies husband, I would never let her do the motorcycle challenge. She thought she would be pretty good at it, although she didn't even know what an "engine" was. She probably thought it was a toy bike or something, or an actual puzzle.
All in all, though, this is going to be much better than the last family edition. I hope the two hippies can stay in for a long time.
Also, does anyone notice that CBS has a lot of racial undertones? The "Black" family last season, now all those comments made by Lake being aired. You wouldn't think stuff like that would make it past editing, unless it was intentional. Who knows...

It's no surprise that Dani(elle) share similar names, looks, ages, and outfits, because they seem to share the same brain. They'll be out soon enough anyways unless CBS has them stay longer than they're worth for ratings sake.
No surprise that Lake is from the "south" as he kept calling one team the "black" team or "that black girl."
Fran and Barry are a disgrace to seniors of the past, based on their performance so far.
BJ & Tyler are the team people will root for, like the clowns or frat brothers of past seasons. They don't seem bad so far.
Lisa & Joni are annoying, they are like the pink ladies from last season.
Eric & Jeremy might get eliminated on the dumbest mistake, simply because they are too cocky.
I wonder who told Desiree she was sexy? She's been living that lie too long.
No opinion on the rest yet.

Hi,
I actually thought that was pretty disgusting.
The Hans
I agree. If I were in his shoes, and that was either my gf or wife, I would have blown up by either yelling at them or picking a fricking fight. FACK, those are fricking disgusting bastards.
I dont know but if Brazil is anything like I seen on the first episode Im not going there. No one wanted to help the other teams with the "gay guys" who are dating. NO ONE. Sad.

^ Wife reminded me of that annoying old screamer from a previous season - remember the one that fell in the cave and cracked her head?.. the same one that sat on top of that wooden elephant that needed to be pushed through some Indian city .. screaming all the while her tired old husband pushed it (and her).
....Oh.. I almost forgot - they ran past the clue-box on the bridge what - 4, 5 times without seeing it? And each time the cameraman stopped and turned...'um..guys... pay attention to me!?'. haha -- hopeless! Please spare me and get booted off next week!
Ha ha, thanks for the memories... that season, my husband and I watched the annoying screamer with gritted teeth; man, she was *SO* annoying. Everything she said, was yelled, wasn't it? We could hardly believe that the older couple on this show ran past the clue box 4 or 5 times without seeing it.

I would rethink that...you're in a whole different country and if you pick a fight with those guys they'll have their "homies" with them and it can easily become 10 vs. 1. Not to mention they'll prob have some weapons on them and who knows how long it will take for the police to arrive.

I don't think its that big of a set-up. The boys are super horny, and the girls are using them to help get them to the end. Just the human nature working itself out...

TBC? What a tease. Oh! C'mon!
After watching this ep, i've come to the conclusion. Lake is definately a wife beater. Don't believe me? Look at the way he treats his wife. "You are gonna scrub" "You are gonna jump" "Don't..." "Shut up" "You need to do it"
I'm glad too see that all the teams seem to be getting along pretty well and are still into helping each other. I know that Lake will definately not help anyone if given the chance, he'll only pretend to help them hoping that they'll help him out in return, but c'mon they're not stupid, they see through it.
I think BJ & Tyler is the first team to actually have a clue in their hand, not open it, and actually take a moment to enjoy the scenary. (Prove me wrong someone, I dare ya).
It was good to see one of the infamous Amazing Race detours come in play again, a task that would take forever.
I guess the rule states that after they open up the dolls they have to put it back? It wasn't read to us, but i'm assuming it was in there, since all the teams re-assembled it once they were done searching through each one. I would have just made a nice big pile.
Overall it was a nice ep, can't wait to see next weeks. I guess we can figure out who didn't get eliminated by watching next weeks preview since there typically isn't 2 detours or 2 road blocks in one leg.
My guess is that they're in Germany next.

Dave and Lori are probably done for this leg:
*They're way behind the other teams at this Detour. Phil implies in his blog that D + L finish last in the first half of this leg.
*They seem to be fighting back the tears during the testimonials/commentary from this leg. They looked rather uneasy while talking about the leg; they had probably been eliminated just moments earlier. Teams are rushed to do interviews and voice-overs immediately after checking into the Pit Stop.

I dont think that they (Lake & Michelle) eliminated the pinkies. Remember the pinkies were almost through the roadblock when Ray & Yolando showed up. It was their teenie tiny brains that failed them .. :|
Very true.
And good point funpolice. I guess they could've also decided on the pinks since they were more of a "sure bet" to be eliminated whereas Ray/Yolanda might've prevailed and then there would be payback...who knows. Editing makes things confusing.

Ray and Yolanda might also be able to beat the Double D's in a foot race, they look really fit. It think it was a mile hike from the roadblock to the pitstop.

Now I dislike Lake even more (is that possible)?
Watching this episode makes me wanna work out.
I too noticed how HOT Mo looked in that ep. Maybe it was the editing, but they made her look "ugly" in the next ep.
I wonder how business is going to be for Lake after this show.

actually, he would've known that they weren't there yet since means that get to the yield take their picture off the board
so if ray and yolando's picture was still there, then he should've been able to figure out that they weren't there yet
Teams only remove a number from the Yield, not their photos. When they arrived at the Yield, Lake and Michelle could see that there were only three numbers left (indicating they were 6th out of 8 teams).

In that case i agree with the person above that the smart/better move would be to yield Ray and Yolanda since they are stronger.

Didn't that happen one season? OK, only the couple that placed first had to beg... (I don't remember the girl's name...her husband was Chip, and the wife had her head shaved in one episode). They were right outside the final pitstop, and they didn't have enough money to pay their taxi driver...so they had to beg!
They still ended up winning, though!

The whole "we're taking everything from you" bit is pretty useless. It's never handicapped any team because they've always been able to get money from another team or just strangers very easily. A time delay would be more effective (but of course they might run into one of those "bunching" areas with specific open times, etc)..
So many people getting upset this episode...Mojo (mainly Joseph), Lake/Michelle always are, Dave/Lori getting SLIGHTLY agitated but more than making up later, and Barry getting all pissed in the car  Kayak polo challenge was pretty cheesy because everyone basically set them up to score easily.

I'm pretty sure each member of the team needs to do an equal amount of roadblocks by then end of the race (if they make it that far)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember teams defaulting to one member who much do the last roadblock due to the ratio

Strange that Phil hasn't mentioned that yet (in his voiceovers describing the roadblock), which he always used to do. Maybe that's not a rule anymore. Maybe because it gives even more advantage to the 2 man teams.
Anybody else notice this episode the obvious dubbed in voiceover when Phil described the 1st place prize? Listen to it again if you've got it recorded. I wonder why? Maybe the original prize sponsor backed out before the airing of the episode?

Almost all 1st place travelocity prizes are voiced over by Phil.. Atleast the last few have been
I'm unsure about the equal amount of roadblocks per team member, but I'm pretty sure it's still a rule.. I know it was in the previous seasons (minus the bs family season)
I think it's fair that the roadblocks are split between both team members, makes the game more interesting and allows for "team" play, not one player carrying the team to the finish

I remember it being a rule 2 races ago, and removed for the last race, or at least no mention was made of it. (I don't count the family race, that one sucked :) )
I don't think it's a rule this time.
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race9/shows/ep06/race/glossary/
No mention of the rule here.
http://www.answers.com/topic/the-amazing-race
Beginning in Season 6, each team member may only complete a maximum of six Roadblocks throughout the entire race. Since there normally are twelve Roadblocks in the Race, this rule forces each team to split the Roadblocks equally between the two members (unless a team uses a Fast Forward to skip one Roadblock, in which case the split can be 6-5). In contrast, Season 5 featured three teams that split the Roadblocks 11-1 or 10-1. The six-Roadblock limit was dropped for Season 8; additionally, that season's four-member-team format required some Roadblocks to be completed by two people. A Roadblock is featured (although, in some episodes, not aired) in every leg except the first one. In Season 1, even the first leg had a Roadblock, but it was not originally aired; it was included in the DVD release.

There's still a 6 Roadblock rule, it was mentioned on various behind-the-scenes footage at this season's official website.
It was also evident in the last episode, when Michelle did her first RB, after Lake completed the first 4. You could also see teams discussing the rule during the high dive RB in Russia, namely Wanda/Desiree and Ray/Yolanda. They were specifially discussing that "You have to do one!"

yep, hopefully, fran and barry, or joseph and monica are next. i hate the teams that mess up once and start whining.
fran and barry miss so many of the little things, like finding the clue boxes. i cringe everytime they have to do one of the hard tasks. like today, they made a 61 year old woman bungie jump. one of these days, they are gonna make an old person get a heart attack. the old contestants never win, its just painful to see them do these things. i can't believe they made it this far though.

Sometimes seeing people who struggle and then go beyond what they think they're capable of makes for good TV. I remember watching one of Phil's video on CBS.com where he said that the show would get really boring if all they did was cast alpha males who regularly do extremely sports. Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds makes the show interesting.
Even with the whining, I think it's great to see old people beating the stronger younger teams. It's like cheering for the underdog.

With people like Lake or Jonathan, why don't they just let their wives drive and have themselves navigate? They're constantly complaining that their wives don't know how to follow directions or read a map. Next race, they should let one of these people partner with the travelocity gnome or something, that way they'll drive and navigate themselves. There does seem to be lots of challenges involving random luck this season. They've had the clothes lines, beer bottles, russian dolls, travelocity gnomes, and now the plates. It does bring some variety to mix up the running order, but near the end, it could cost a deserving team of the win.

Zach and Flo was fun to watch in a trainwreck sort of way. I think the best team dynamics has to go to Kris and Jon from Season 6.

I'm perry sure they had to use some of their money on gas for the cars or jeeps. Yes it's fuel up when they pick them up at the airport but they where driving from place to place like 200-300 km from spot to spot. And unlike the family AR #8 BP isn't sponsoring the show so no free gas card. And a 5 min stop at a BP GS every show. But a least they are not driving Yukon's across the back roads of middle American towing a camper.

That'a a good point about the gas. However, I think they were driving a land cruiser (with a Toyota hood ornament, which I've never seen on a Toyota before) and most land cruisers sold internationally are diesel. So those things can probably get about 1000km per tank.

damn fine epsiode. I have to make more of an effort to watch it live instead of days after on my computer.
I thought it was complete @$$ that the other teams wouldn't even tell the hippies what flights were the earliest. I mean, common sense would dictate that there wouldn't be any challenges happening when they arrived at 11PM, but they still decided to be complete d*cks about it. It's not like it was going to compromise their positions that much.
the Hippies are now my favourite team, and Fran and Barry have climbed the ladder substantially since the beginning. They always annoyed the hell out of me cause of their poor choices at detours and fran's incessant whining, but recently they've made better choices and are only helpful to the hippies, so, they're ok in my books.

Yet another luck related task..
Stupid frat boys, couldn't follow directions twice in one episode. I've said it before, but the stripping teams of their possessions/money has yet to make an impact during any Race. Teams always get $ from other teams or strangers and losing their possessions just means less comfort.
The Race is so easy if you know how to read a bloody map! franbarry...what did they do? Nothing spectacular but they didn't get lost. The detour required no skill other than finding the place to deliver the message to. The digging was pure luck and they got first because Mojo couldn't find the castle. It seems like the single most important thing is the driving..

for sure, the most important thing in this game is being able to read maps. The minutes used asking for directions is usually the difference between 1st and 3rd. This season, Ray and Yolanda have asked for directions in almost every episode which keeps them right in the middle. If you take the risk and try to read the map yourself, you can come in first if you read it properly, or last if you don't.

I don't particularly like a team either. The hippies are fun to watch, so I guess I want them to win. the frat boys are pretty funny too, so I hipe they make the final 3. I hate Mojo, cause they seem like a$$holes, complain about luck all the time, and call themselves MoJo. Ray and yolanda are ok, but they're not particularly exciting to watch, so i'm indifferent towards them.
Fran and Barry might have had a decent chance had the taxi that they booked showed up. That was probably the turning point.
I don't see the problem with giving the Hippies money, because they've been helpful to other teams in the past, and they would probably help out a team if they needed it. Sure, it's a competition, but that doesn't mean you can't be a decent human being still. Remember, it's just a game, and when the race is over, it's the person you are that's important. That said, if MoJo asked me for money, i'd laugh in there face.

1. They got out of the cab and let MOJO in.

The last episode was a perfect example of what sucks  the most about 'The Amazing Race' - the first team started at 11:47pm, and teams then had to drive a SHORT 15miles to the Swan Tower, only to find that the tower was closed until 8AM. No matter how far behind any other team was at the start, by the real start of the day, everyone was at the same point! How annoying is that if you're *not* the last-placed team??!
After completing the first challenge and taking a taxi to the airport, the teams ALL got on the same plane. If that wasn't bad enough, had some teams by chance arrived on a later flight, they would all have been at the same starting point for the next challenge as Crocodylus Park didn't open until 9AM the next day.
That meant that 1/2 of the show was a complete waste of time.
Or was it.. after all, we did get to hear Tyler say "Bye bye wallets... - I mean crocodiles!" as they were leaving!
As others have noted, the Hippies were a disaster in this episode. When they left the skydiving place, they were likely 30mins ahead of the next team (it takes a while for a small plane to climb to 12,000ft, a few minutes to decend, remove your gear, etc) and that lead evaporated before they were even halfway done the jungle river challenge. Later, when they stopped to ask the ambulance driver for directions, not only did Tyler not ask the ambulance guy directly (instead relying on info from a competitor), but BJ should have used the few moments stopped roadside as an opportunity to put on his shoes - KNOWING that it was a mad-dash 3-team race to the finish.
And if that weren't bad enough, his "I'm 10 metres in front of Monica so I think I'll be the only one to take this shortcut over the *ouch* rocks in my bare-feet" proved disastrous.
Silly hippies..

I was really disappointed with the hippies string of bad decisions yesterday. It seems like they went brain dead for that leg of the race.
1. They got out of the cab and let MOJO in.
2. Ask the Frat Boys for direction when the ambulance was right there beside them.
3. Not wear shoes, or at least take the shoes with you when you race to the finish line.
The worst decision of all was going over the rocks instead of using the bridge on the way to the pit stop.

What tricks? Even the "nicest" winners ever like Chip and Kim pulled off their own tricks... i.e., sitting in a taxi so that neither they nor the twins could leave the location in Argentina.

well, if that first team would have arrived at 6am...they would have departed at 6pm...in which they would probably have got into the Swan Tower...=)
it's not the show's fault that the first team didn't arrive until 11:47am...

Chris & Alex from TAR2? Chip & Reichen from TAR4?
Don't remember those ones clearly but I was referring more to the last few races (5-7) where one team was near the top always...
I've gone back to those ones you've mentioned...Chris/Alex finished first only twice (discounting the last leg), they finished 6th twice, 7th twice whereas Wil/Tara on that same race finished 5th once and no worse for the rest of the race. Which means Wil/Tara was the dominating team but failed to win in the end.
Skip to TAR4...this was closer between Chip/Reichen and Jon/Kelly but both teams' average placing was 3rd. Not to mention the fact that Chip/Reichen won just 1 leg prior to the last while the billygoats (Jeff/David) won 4 times.
Now the races I was talking about. TAR5, Colin/Christie started 7th, 6th and then never lower than 4th, winning 6 legs. Their average placing was 2nd as opposed to Chip/Kim's 3rd.
TAR6: Kris and Jon never finished lower than 4th throughout the race, winning 4 legs. Their average placing was 2nd as opposed to Freddy/KKKendra's 4th (and winning just 1 leg).
TAR7: A little closer than I remember but Romber still won the most legs (5) and had a better average placing (2nd) than Uchenna/Joyce (3rd). Romber also finished 5th once and was 3rd or better the rest of the legs.

Just finished watching it, and I'm damn happy that MoJo got eliminated. I never particularly liked them cause I felt they whined too much and didn't have that competitive edge. And after hearing Joseph say "you go to thailand" in some racist asian accent, if I ever see him on the street I'm going to punch him in the face.
I'm surprised that Ray and Yolanda didn't stick around for the fast forward. I guess in the end it worked out for them, but if it were me, I'd go all out. I was impressed by the determination of the hippies to see it to the end. I highly doubt Monica would have had the will to do it.
Anyways, I'm also not really rooting for any particular team, but I'll say that the frats have the best chance. Though in past AR, the final leg can come down to just pure luck, like a delay of flight due to bad weather, or a flat tire. So, really, I think it's anyone's game.

man, i was glad that the hippies won, but wow, for a team that looked so damn good on paper, did they ever struggle, and let's face it, if it weren't for the nature of the last challenge, they would have lost, going away.
otoh, i was really, really happy to see that they reinforced the fact that mere brawn is not enough to win this game--the frat boys lost because they just weren't as knowledgable (perhaps intelligent, as well) as the hippies. i'm pretty sure that the hippies made many more mistakes than the frat boys, but because of the recurring 'bunch-up' pattern, they couldn't win this one in a blowout.

The Hippies were "on" Opie and Anthony yesterday morning.
At the end of O&A's walk from the FreeFM studios to the XM studios they ran into the Hippies on the street and talked with them for a minute or two. The Hippies indicated that they were not supposed to do any press due to their contracts but they talked with O&A anyway.
Hopefully it was just a plant and they do not lose out on any of their $$$.

AR All-Stars would be awesome. I really want to see Rob/Amber, the hippies, the frats and definitely Zack and Flo from season 3.
I can't say enough good things about Zack from season 3. That guy is a real champ. He put up with a whining, nagging ex-gf that kept hitting on other guys and he carried the team physically and emotionally without ever getting angry. He deserved to win the million and a shot at another million for all the stuff he had to go through.

Again TAR is unlikely to create an All-Star edition now or in the forseeable future. The show almost jumped the Shark with the casting of past reality TV contestants and further cannibalized its audience with the Family Edition. TAR has always prided itself as a more professional reality show, and one that has actually won Emmys on a consistent basis. Unless the show is on its last legs on TAR 59 and is hosted by 90 year old Regis Philbin, the production team will not succumb to another half-baked ratings ploy.
