Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy a 2002 Protege 5, auto, yellow (preferred) or red, w/ moonroof, good-excellent condn, no accidents, under 95,000kms.
If you know of anyone selling for a good price, please let me know. I'd rather buy privately if possible.. the thought of going to a used car lot is stressing me out!
I'm located in Toronto, but willing to travel within 1 hour drive to check out potential cars.
Thanks for any leads!

Check out www.usedcarsontario.com. I sold my car there in 3 days and a friend of mine found his Honda civic there. The majority of the people selling on that site are private sellers.

I just bought the same car a couple months ago. I got a great private sale deal off Auto Trader. I was looking for a long time, but got lucky when I called the seller the same day the ad came out. I bought it that night after test driving it (conditional on inspection of course).

I have no complaints about the car at all. I'd take this over an over priced Civic resale anyday. :) Way more car for the dollar.

Great car :) I just bought one, 03 Black with 39k, auto/tiptronic, sunroof for 15.5k - I think it's a good deal, only problem is it was from a dealer so had to pay 15% tax.
I think the only difference between 03 and 02 is the tiptronic, and of course that you will probably still have some comprehensive warranty left with an 03.
If you can find a non-mazda dealer, you may be able to get a good deal since they are more keen to move cars that are not their own. I got mine from a Nissan dealer.

This was basically my first car - 2002 Mazda Protege 5, air, moonroof, manual. Man, that was a nice car. Well built, few problems. I would recommending looking at the stickshift, because its SO much fun to drive. I kinda miss my stickshift - I got rid of my P5 and bought a Sunfire because its so much cheaper.

I'm not sure if you actually know anything about cars, however a "Tiptronic" transmission is the Manu-Matic on a Porsche, not a Mazda.

On another note, take a look at a Ford Focus ZX5. It has the same engine, better chassis (drives/handle better) , bigger trunk, is better looking, and you can pick them up for about the same price

Hi Mr Car God, no I know very little about cars, and even less about Porsches. I have never heard the term "Manu Matic" nor I have I any idea what name Mazda gives the transmission in my car. But I can tell you that it has a conventional automatic mode, and a semi-manual mode where you can shift gears up/down but there is no clutch.

But thanks for your informative helpful post!

Although the Ford Focus and the Protege do share parts, they have a totally different design and build quality. Lemon-Aid gives the Protege 5 out of 5 stars (higher than the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla). While the Ford Focus only gets 1 out of 5 stars mostly due to unreliability and dangerous defects.

If you NEED a 4-door hatchback the only other cars I would consider are the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix, Suzuki Aerio and Suzuki Esteem Wagon.

Also, I have to agree with danfromwaterloo's comment. I've driven both, and the 5-speed is quite a bit peppier than the automatic.
