I don't think public schools should be involved with faith nor the Queen. two things that not enough people believe in to waste 5-15 minutes every day of the school year. if you haven't realized, our students are already falling behind the rest of the world.

well I guess it's just a question of if you're familiar with the queen or not. I'v never seen her, nor am I aware of what she has done for our country.
I look at her, I don't see pride nor a reason to be hopefull.
what in the world does she do and is good for other than taking some of your taxes?

my point was he specifically said in PUBLIC schools that faith and queen shouldnt part of it.
thats why i said that why should the catholic school system be different to the queen rather then a public school. Faith and religiion i understand. but no differentiation for the queen.

The Queen is the PUBLIC figurehead of our country.
We should continue to support this in our schools, and if we have stopped, we should start again.
I have no idea how to "fix" Canada, when so many think it is not broken.
Supporting the idea of the monachy brings us closer together with other Common Wealth nations. This is why folks from Jamaica, Bahamas and Burmuda etc treat Canadians as "friendly" and Americans like crap. We share a common bond.
If you strip a nation of its common bonds, of the things that everyone can support, what will you have left? Petty squabbling and an absense of faith in Canada, as an entity. We see those that don't support he monarchy have no values to replace her with. I suggest they don't care about Canada, her heritage, or her future. They are pursuing selfish goals that don't help Canada now or in the future.
Do children want Canada to be a better place? Do the schools teach children that a nation is a fragile thing that must be built up not picked apart?
If children are falling behind in school, who is responsible? The parents, not the Queen.

No thanks.
I don't want any more of the Queen in our schools etc, other than being the 'figurehead' on our money.

Why do you even want her to be in our money?
She is still our head of state. It is not something I like but the fact is she still is our head of state.
Blaming that minutes to spend on the Queen costing our education is misleading. (north77 did not say that)
How about banning singing Oh Canada? That will save some time too.

Faith sure, it shouldn't be part of the school system, but the Queen is part of our history, part of our heritage. It's where we come from; she is where Canada comes from. Even if you're not from Canada, its still part of your adopted homelands past and an important part and you should cherish that part because you're now part of our great nation. The Queen, and being part of the common wealth has made us who and what we are today and this shouldn't be just brushed of to the side, as if it means nothing.

I have no problem getting rid of the whole "god bless the queen" etc.. and a prayer. When I was in elementary we had to say all those everyday and at the time I had no clue why on earth I had to bow down my head and say a bunch of things that meant nothing to me. I mean why would I say a prayer before school start if I'm buddhist  Then I had to take religion class too!!! They got rid of it when I was in junior high and I was glad they did since it's not right to force other people's beliefs onto you. I firmly believe that we have to sing or at least listen to O Canada everyday in school since it is our national anthem.
As for the queen... I honestly say I don't really respect her all that much. Sure she is our head of state but that was back in history when the monarchy actually did stuff like sit with parliment and participate. She still sit with parliment but more as a barbie doll for show than anything else. It's Tony Blair that has all the powers not the queen. Now all she is doing is spending our tax dollars on her thousands and thousands of hats she buys. I can't really respect somebody like the queen that don't do anything especially when she can't even control her family problems. I have the atmost respect for previous monarchs like Queen Victoria but Queen Elizabeth II makes me hate her more than respect her.

The point is the certain faith that these people had wanted that in the school but not any thing else.

I want us to get rid of the queen. Think about it, we have another country's leader as our head of state. We can still remember our past without the Queen

the queen a part of our history? give me a break ojam, monarchy has always been evil/corrupt and kept people back from progress/freedom.
it's the "misérables" blood in some people that still cause them to admire royalty. :| (imo)

That doesn't make the monarchy any less part of our history, I guess just because some parts of our history are bad we should just forget about it. We were part of the British Empire up until just over 100 years ago. We are part of the common wealth. She doesn't have any power, but that doesn't mean we should just forget where we come from. The Queen is a figurehead that unites all the common wealth countries; it doesn't matter if monarchies in the past were "evil" as you put it.

by all means. Abolish "God save the Queen" and post "This activity for rent".
Then sponsors can pay the school and the kids can sing for example a Coca-Cola jingle. This will not only be a fund raiser but more accurately reflect today's values.

I don't see what would be gained by saying some words in the morning, especially to someone who can't even hear us. I'm not going to say that the Canadian anthem should be removed from schools, but it was personally a waste of time for me. I heard that song every school day for over 12 years and I still can't remember the words. I don't think it made me any more patriotic than I was, and I think I'm slightly more patriotic than the average Canadian. As a kid, I was more concerned with what I was going to have for lunch that day, or that test during 3rd.
It means more to the adults in society to know that the kids are singing the anthem and praying for the queen, than it does to the kids who have to do it.

Everyday? That's just a waste of time and brings about no benefit.

"The creation of an Australian republic can actually deliver a heightened sense of unity, it can enliven our national spirit and, in our own minds and those of our neighbours, answer beyond doubt the perennial question of Australian identity - the question of who we are and what we stand for."
~ Paul Keating, Prime Minister of Australia

"I love the Queen dearly, but the time has come when we must have a head of state chosen by us, representative of us and immediately accountable to us. The majority of people in Jamaica are ready to consign to history the last vestiges of colonialism."
~ P.J. Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica
-------------------------------------------------------
"I think it's simply a factor of New Zealand evolving very much its own identity. Over time, I’m on the public record as saying it is inevitable that New Zealand will change its constitution and become a republic."
~ Helen Clark, Prime Minister of New Zealand

"The intention to have a Barbadian as the Head of State of our country, is inspired by the purest intention of lifting up the Barbadian identity, ... to set new goals of aspiration for every child born in this land."
~ Owen Arthur, Prime Minister of Barbados

In 1997, only 18 per cent Canadians oppose replacing Queen Elizabeth with a Canadian head of state when she dies. Forty-one per cent want the monarchy abolished outright and 39 per cent were indifferent. Significantly, these figures are recorded without the aid of any organized republican movement or lobbying group. Federal Industry Minister John Manley calls for the abolition of the Canadian monarchy
In 1998, The Canadian government discusses the possibility of abolishing the monarchy as part of Canada’s millennium celebrations but backs down over concerns over the divisions it might cause.
Yes, much time is spent trying to remove The Queen as our figurehead.
NONE of the countries mentioned by you has done so.
You can pick as many quotes from self serving politicians as you like. It has not been done because the people want a figurehead who is above petty theft such as what has been seen with the Gomery enquiry. Over time, if we ignore our heritage, then we may loose our queen.
Your last remark indicates it would be divisive to the nation.
The suggestion is that it does more good than bad, supported by your own comments.

The monarchy IS important to me, and I am Canadian. She offers me more than the polititians that govern us do.
It is true that many would prefer to have no monarchy. I question whether they hold any beliefs dear.
I see no problem with the monarchy. It causes no pain or trouble for us, and gives many a return that can instill pride.
I am proud to be Canadian, proud to have a Queen. I am embarrassed by our politicians...
I am sure that eventually it will be abolished, hopefully not in my lifetime.
I have sworn an oath of allegiance to the Queen, and that cannot be "taken back". So have the politicians quoted earlier. This makes them hypocrites. They have no honour and no integrity.
Every day more of these self-serving people, with no honour, chip away at the values that made this country, and many others. They give nothing back.
The people who destroy our heritage are stealing our future.
I say give the children an IDEAL. Something to belive in.
Give them The Queen.
