Good public relations is good business because you can deceive people into trusting what you are doing is safe and a necessary.

It's cheaper to spin an image with your own words than by paying for it. Oh,, and by the way, all of this information is going to be irrelevent because you can't cite it. Get thee to a library!

Go to the library. Look for the books:
Public Opinion - Walter Lippmann
PR! - Stuart Ewen

PublicO was written by the creator of PR it's a great read for understanding the history and methods. PR! provides more of a modern perspective on public relations. Both are essential is you plan on studying/working an a pr field.

Benefits to pr are whatever you need them to be. It is that flexible.

good public relations measn that people trust you more and likes you as a company which results in word of mouth and repeat business
both which are more valuable than any advertising campaign

just think.
people slam wal-mart for being bad, so people now stop going to wal-mart because of it.
the public relations mission at this point is to convince these people that wal-mart actually do good stuff and rebuff any negativity they have so people will come back.

its promoting their brand and image. you dont' want to shop or buy goods from a place you think is evil or somehow harming you. you like to shop at places that makes you feel good about it..
think body-shop for that.. their whole advertsisement campaigns have been on being environmentally responsible.
