I also needed a microwave a few months back.
It so happened that when I needed it, there was this awesome rebate at LNT (Linens N THings). The microwave was like $70 or 80 - not the best, but it has decent features (some presets, etc...).
To top it off: There was a $30 rebate, bringing it down to $40.
So, check LNT out see if they have any current promo.

Oh, was just looking in the flyers I just got.
SEARS is having a good deal.
Kenmore 0.8 cubic ft microwave. 800 Watts (very good: 100Watts/0.1 cubic foot). Regular price $99.99. #86410 (white or black)
Now: $89.99 starting tomorrow (Sat. Jan 28 until Feb 3).
BUT LOOK:
Go on Saturday or Sunday, and scratch and save at least 10%!
If they try and say that the microwave is a major appliance to get you to spend $200 and up, microwaves aren't major appliances!
Check, though. usually they're quite nice about these things.
In any event, if next saturday they have one of those $10 off 50 things, you can go back to get $10.
So net price will be about $80 one way or another.

If they try and say that the microwave is a major appliance to get you to spend $200 and up, microwaves aren't major appliances!Did you happen to look at Sears.ca? If you want to find microwaves on their site, you have to go to the Major Appliances section.
Anyway, I recently purchased a new microwave and after reading various reviews I decided to go with a Panasonic model with the "Inverter" technology (http://www.panasonic.ca/English/appliance/microwave/inverter.asp). The best deal I found for that was this one at Canadian Tire (http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=140847439 6669984&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474396670271&bmUID=1138367036127&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443285295&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true) (MSRP is $250, which is what it sells for elsewhere). It would have been nice to stay under $100, but I'm still very happy with the purchase.

There is a 900 watt 0.9 cu.ft. unit available at Home depot for $88. Stainless finish. Handle is on the door ..... better than the push button door release on the $89 unit (IMO). Also, there are some smaller units for $74 but you may have to adjust the times recommended on microwave food cooking instructions to compensate for the lower power. If it's more convenient for you, you could add something else for at least $12 and be eligible for the free shipping. Here's the link

With microwaves keep in mind a couple of important things. Size can be a factor 1.0 or larger will fit most things. Also wattage is important. I wouldn't recommend anything less than 1000 watts of power - there is a big difference once you get to that level as compared to less powerful ones. You can buy decent microwaves with the above qualities for $85-$100 at a lot of places.

You're right. Just read in the new Canadian Tire flyer that they have an 1100 watt microwave going on sale tomorrow for $79.99 !!! If you have the counter space for a unit that size the price seems pretty good.
