In my bill I found out that my 'free' modem will now cost me $3.00 a month rental.
Is there any deals on purchasing a modem?

Non-Rogers modems will not work, as you have to get them to activate it. Pay out $100, and then pay it back reaaaal slow like.
or just pay that $3.00 for 3 years.. Either/Or.

Can you please detail that? I'm planning on buying one from somebody that was with Shaw/Telus. I phoned Rogers, verified the make/model and gave them the MAC address, they said it will work fine.(?)

When I signed up for the Internet/Cable TV package, it included the modem. I thought I owned it. It turns out that the rental fee has been included in the monthly fee. That is some fine print for yah. So really I have been over charged for almost two years. If I would have known it was a rental and include in the price I would have bought it two years ago.
I hate dealing with Rogers so much but DSL is not available in my area or street or some dumb thing.

checkign www.dslreports.com (searched "rogers cable modem purchase") and they said that rogers will be offering a modem purchase option for all users in march 2006. The purcahse option will be $99.95.
At $3 a month rental charge it would take you 38.33 ($115/$3) months to break even on the modem. Makes sense to purchase it with the extreme package since you get higher speeds but don't htink it makes sense with the other packages.
The other option seems to be to purchase a DOCSIS 2.0 modem and get rogers to activate it with a bit of haggling
