My mom needs a cell and will barely use it all (once a month if that). So i was thinking pay as you go is the way to go. Anyone know of any deals or suggestions ? ...
can i use any cellphone (specific to carrier i know), or are only special phones designated for Pay as you go
(im out in vancouver if that matters)

Virgin Mobile might be the way to go. I just bought it and I did a ton of research. I also don't use a cell phone very much.
The advantage of the deal is that the minutes won't expire for 120 days, compared to most companies that are 30 days. If you're mom only uses her phone once a month, then she only has to pay $15 every 4 months to keep her minutes.
Other pay as you go will expire your minutes every 30 days.

I am a recent virgin mobile user, and I'm quite happy. Reception and customer service is good, rates are fair. For 15$ every 4 months, it should be more than enough moula.

If you've got a spare phone either locked to Rogers or unlocked that can take a SIM card. You can get one of the $100 prepaid PayAsYouGo Rogers off a couple of Ebayers for $30-35. It doesn't expire for 365 days. I had a spare phone, I bought one of these SIM cards, the Ebayer activated it for me, sent me the new number and password, I received it, I put it in the phone, and it works. I now put the phone in the car as an emergency phone or if I have visitors from out of town.

Did the same thing... Got a phone on eBay too for 20$.
Works great... Works out to around 400minutes for the year.
Only thing is after the year going to have to pay full price... Might stop using this service at that point.

Or, if you buy a Rogers Much Music cell phone before January 31st, you'll automatically get $100 worth of airtime that will last 1 year before it expires.

I heard the Rogers prepaid SIM cards are cheap on eBay. Like a fraction of the value of what it's worth.

Just go on www.ebay.ca
Search for "Rogers 100". You'll get a few. But I think the promo is ending soon.
