^^as title says.
I just recently bought a V4 WRT54G and would like to see which firmware I should put on it and would benefit me the most. I use bittorrent and also plan to be able to stream video files to my PVR downstairs to watch on my TV.
Thanks.

I recommend HyperWRT with Tofu over DD-WRT ... Personal experiences I've had issues with DD-WRT.

Thanks. I'll give HyperWRT w/Tofu a try. I heard HyperWRT is the firmware that is most similar to the stock firmware.. does that mean less additional features?

most similar in terms of looks of the GUI
but no, the additional features are not less
there are more than you would need
go for hyperWRT + tofu!

I just tried forwarding ports to my computer for BT-ing, but somehow it doesn't seem to be working... I'm only getting ~30 although it has gotten up to 70 for a few seconds. Also, I find that I'm not always successful in logging into my admin panel, sometimes it just keeps trying to load up the router screen but is unsuccessful at doing so.
This is still with the stock firmware btw.

I initially used DD-WRT, and had issues with stability and performance (WRT54G v4)
I've since switched to HyperWRT+Tofu and the router has been rock solid. There are a lot more features in DD-WRT though, but most are very specific advanced features that the majority of users will not need.

I'm having some problems with my WRT54G right now and would appreciate some help here...
Okay, everything works fine. I installed HyperWRT+tofu on my v4 linksys. Speed seems to be on the slow side, however, whether its surfing the internet or bittorrenting, but I'll let that go. But every few hours both my PC and my laptop would be unable to go to the internet - my bittorrent keeps running though. I can't even get into my router config page... I have to physically pull the power cable out for 10 secs and replug to get the internet working again. BTW, this is for WIRED connections, I haven't even started trying wireless yet (and hopefully it doesn't get worse than this with wireless).
Does anyone have a solution for me? And while you're at it, please tell me how to push up my speeds... I had 2200kb with my wired SMC router and now only 1400 with this linksys... (tested at performance.toast.net) and bittorrent speeds on average have lowered around 30kb.

Edit the startup script. Do a search, this has been discussed before, most recently in the past few days.

How do you access the startup script? Can't find that in any of the posts and links here at RFD.

It's in adminstration, at the bottom, there's a button that says "startup"

Nevermind, I found it. Do I need to reset it again after I put it in?

I would believe so...you can reboot through the control panel, on the same page at the very bottom :)

Alright, all done. Let's hope I see a significant difference now.

This is still only my first day with the WRT54G, lol.
I couldn't resist seeing at $49 at Staples plus finding a v4 plus everyone's been saying good stuff about it for centuries.

I haven't tried tofu 12 yet ... for the time being, I'm using tofu 11 without a startup script, and I haven't found any issues yet. I have had multiple computers running on the router (some 24/7) no disconnection issues yet. Though I have version 3 of the router.
Try the startup script, if that doesn't do it for you, see if tofu 11 works better. I know that tofu 12 was just released a week or so ago. :) Good luck.

Do you run BT or any other P2P programs tho? The major problem where people needed to add the startup script was for those who run BT/P2P software for 24/7.

i just read that the THIBOR firmware gives you the speedbooster functionality and the Tofu give you faster internet speeds. So I guess its just personal preference (THIBOR -faster LAN speeds or TOFU -faster Internet speeds)

Yup, I have run BT on occasion for numerous hours with full upload speed. Have not had any issues :)

Thanks for the help everyone. Tried 3 day-2 night consistant BT without and dropping of connections (unless it was while I was sleeping, lol). Great router, better than my previous one. However, I find the average speed dropping for probably 20kbps from when I first turned on my computer to when I finished the 3-day test. Probably only a seeding problem though.

I'm currently using dd-wrt. Based on the post about HyperWRt, i'm thinking of switching.. I have one question.. Do I install Hyper and then Tofu on top of that???? Will the second one not overwrite the first?
Edit: NM I found that there is "bundled" package of both..!!
Another question...
I also have a DI-624 that I am not using anymore.. can I set this us on another floor of the house to boost my signal? Can I have two wireless routers at the smae time (one connected to teh cable modem and the other wirelessly to the other router)???

seems like you can use your DI-624 to expand your wireless coverage via WDS
enable WDS in your wrt54g+di-624
as for configuring them to work together, google it
im sure you'll find answers

it is a seeding problem since i've had tofu12 on it for 3 days 3 nights now and pulled past 30gigs and even on a single torrent when the others finished i was pulling in 300kb which is the max for my bell dsl while uping at 60k (left 20k upload for surfing use)

Guys, I need help again...
I just recently switched to Sympatico (help I was previously asking for was concerning Rogers as ISP), and seem to be having some problems.
Under the same settings, port forwards, settings, startup scripts, etc.:
1) Internet is VERY SLOW, comparable to dialup
2) Bittorrent is reasonable speed
3) Occasion connection drops, perhaps every 15-30 minutes
I'm becoming sick and tired of this! I DID change the router to run PPPoE instead of Dynamic, which was the only change I made between going from Rogers to Sympatico. I've tried direct connection and it works flawlessly - even faster than Rogers. And since the router was working fine, I know it's neither's problem, rather a problem with configuration.
Anyone with experience with Sympatico+WRT54G+HYPERWRT+TOFU12 able to give me any suggestions? Thanks.

Call sympatico they probably have to reset your connection. Happened to me and it's fine now.
