*** See my second post on page 2 ***
Is anyone using a modem they did not purchase from Rogers with
their *cough* highspeed service ???.
BTW: I recently picked up a Motorola SB5100 Docsis 2.0 modem in the States.
I just got off the phone with these people and was told that they can't
and won't enter modem info for any unit not purchased or rented from
them. Is this total BS and I'm being given the runaround or am I actually
being told the truth ???.
Thnx in advance for your input........

It's the truth. They won't do it.

Thnx for the quick replies although I wish your answers were different. ;)
I guess it's only 3web that allows you to use your own "anywhere" purchased
modem.

Although it is Shaw/Rogers policy to provide you with the newest modem that they have (according to the CSR I dealt with). He told me that if I had an old one, they'd provide me a new one, even if I bought an old crappy one second-hand.

I want to upgrade to Extreme, but don't want to get dinged with
their modem rental fee or pay their rip-off price for a modem.
BTW: The Motorola Surfboard modem I bought (own) is a newer revision
than the the model they currently provide me with. ;)
In any event... I'll search the board and see if there is a way to secure
a better price on one of their modems or a way to avoid the modem rental
fee.
Cheers !!!

Try selling the cable modem you bought on eBay.

Is this a new policy?
Last August you could use third party modems for the extreme plan. Maybe it came with the cap, bt throttling and usenet cancellation.

What's the big deal? I bought a modem from them for $100 flat for my Extreme service. In another year, it would've paid off itself instead of renting.

how do they know ur modem is not going to be sending interference and signals back down into the cable network the other way and causing service interruptions in your neighbourhood, its HAPPENED before in the past, they spend a lot of time and money trying to find out how it happens and next thing u know, its not the fault of their network, its some customers crappy 3rd party modem, not only that, but ther is a risk of interfering with your neighbours tv and internet signals, ya you can say ur modem is built well, but its policy now and its written in stone, sorry your sol thanks to some assclowns who got away with it.

Huh ???
Paolo..... The modem I purchased is the EXACT same model that rogers
provides it's subscribers. Motorola Surfboard SB5100. I mentioned that in my
original post.

>>> Rooster... If you knew what I paid for my SB5100 you'd understand my
position. ;)

it may even be the exact same, but according to rogers, they dont have your modems serial number on their list, so to them, its foreign.. if htey had your modems serial number, that means it came from their inventory, which is certified through its qc and testing, otherwise, anyone can sell a modem and say its certified and its actualyl not.. no one knows, no one wants to take those chances.

its EXACTLY like using a non-telus phone on a telus network, htey dont guarentee it or dont necessarily have hte tools to support it, even htough it looks identical, different cable companies issue different firmware revisions and there is NO way rogers is able to support this eihter.. so just ebay it off and buy one from a rogers batch

I asked them once because I was thinking of buying one of those combined wifi Motorola modems and they said they would as long as it is Docsis 2. I'm glad I never bought it.

dmdsoftware2... Was the confirmation from tech support ???
Some of the people working in retail sales at rogers are like
chickens running around with their heads cut off.
I have confirmation from "SXR" "top level" tech at rogers that
there wouldn't be a problem and that my modem's S/N and MAC
address can be added to the database.
Paolo.. Relax... It's not the end of the world for me whether or not
they let me use my own modem. If the final answer is no, I'll take
my measly business to 3web as I haven't read too many complaints
about their service in downtown TO.
Have a good one.......
Cheers !!!

Well.....
I'm now using the Motorola Surfboard modem that I purchased
in the U.S. :D
I have to give props to the Rogers Level 1 & 2 guys that worked
everything out for me.
If you are ever in my position, this is the procedure to follow:
*** DO NOT CALL THE SALES DEPARTMENT FIRST ***
*** Your modem has to be a Motorola SB5100/SB5120 ***
- Call tech support, speak to the support screener, explain your scenario
and you will be transferred to Level 1 sup.
- Explain the situation to the Level 1 tech. The Level 1 tech will ask you for
the modem's S/N & MAC and then contact Level 2 sup.
- Level 2 sup will add "your" modem S/N and MAC into their system.
- Level 1/Level 2 tech will contact the sales department and set them straight on your behalf.
- Within a half hour or less, you'll be set to go with you own modem.

Hey everyone...
Does the modem rental fee ONLY apply to uses with Rogers Extreme?
Or does it not matter what type of Rogers Net service you have?
