VPN endpoint for i think 7 tunnels
Radius authentication for wireless
Wireless distribution Service to extend existing wireless networks
Bridge mode
this is a few features that generally do not come on your typical low cost router
for $4 i bought one

Blanc is rebranded gigafast. For technical information try:
http://www.bcwireless.net/moin.cgi/GigaFast_WF719-CAPR
it includes a link to the hidden page which will allow you change mroe advanced features like transmit power.
and for Blanc's website:
http://blancnetworks.com/
and it does WDS, there is a firmware upgrade at the blanc site that reportedly:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V1.2.7
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes
-Improve WLAN performance
-Improve firewall security
-Fix WEP web display irregulation while setting WDS
So far I'm pretty impressed with it, $4 you can't go wrong.

for WDS, you would be able to set this one up in WDS mode and it will act as an access point wirelessly bridging the an existing network served by another router?
Do you need two routers with WDS to do this or this + another router connected to internet.

Just an FYI, the UPC in the rebate form doesn't match the UPC on the

I bought this online during the boxing day deal and Best Buy screwed up and shipped me Wireless USB adapter. When I spoke to customer service, they said that there was a screw up and a lot of customers got the wrong item shipped for this order.
I had to go through their stupid RMA process and have still not gotten a refund. Lining up in store was not an option considering the post Christmas line ups.
I don't trust their website, so I ended up picking one up at the store, and the rebate form prints out with the receipt.
As for this UPC on the rebate form it matches the UPC on the item I picked up in store.

I'm using this router in bridge mode, it is connected by ethernet to my Linksys WRT54G. If anyone can figure out how to get this to connect wirelessly to my other router and still provide wireless router-like functionality, let us know. I don't think the Linksys supports WDS.

It took me a little bit to figure that out too. The one that is 1.8M I believe is the firmware, and that flashed properly and it said firmware v1.2.7 in the Status webpage after.
I also flashed the one labeled webpages, I'm guessing this updates the configuration webpages (it was around 60K) and it flashed ok as well, but the third small file, something about vpn, wouldn't flash for me. I read somewhere it was for routers with more than 2M of ram, but I couldn't really verify that. So 2/3 of the files flashed properly for me, and it still works, so maybe just try flashing the 1.8M linux file and the webpage one, I didn't notice any problems with it after and I have to assume if it was meant to be flashed, it would have worked when I tried it. Odd nothing was mentioned in the README though, ah well.

Bought one a few days ago, got it working within 15 min. However, can't get WPA2 nor WPA working with my Latitude D610 (w/ Centrino). Upgraded firmware to 1.2.7, still doesn't work. Oh well, at least WEP works... and now I can stop "borrowing" my neighbor's wireless.... all in all, not bad for $8.47.
Blanc's website is really weak... and so is the included product documentation. You get what you pay for.

I had issues getting WPA2 to work for a while, but in the end I was setting the router to WPA and the laptop to WPA2 I think, I guess they aren't compatible. You might also want to check if the encryption method is the same, ie. AES/TKIP, I hear WEP is only a deterrent, cracking it just takes time to watch the required number of packets to go by. WPA2 for the win.

I bought an open box at a B&M BB, $9 off for $80.99 before rebate, works out to under 4$ after taxes and rebate, sweet!
Thx to TRK9's tip, I asked the cashier to print out the rebate form, the rebate she gave me does indeed have the right UPC on it.
Looks like the error is definitely in the online rebate form for the standalone router deal.
BB online totally screwed up my boxing day order, so I am happy I got a router and no worries about the rebate.
My experiences with BB online has been a total waste of time.
I've never had any problems at all with FS and BB b&m stores and FS online, so I'm definitely not doing any more shopping at bestbuy.ca

I really dig this router. I can see why it's on sale, it's not exactly idiotproof.
The reboot time is pretty long, and the menus lack polish.
It will not be suitable for everyone, so maybe there will be more open boxes
next week.
It suits me though, it's exactly what I am looking for. I found set up a breeze, and it has lots of options,
special thx to the person who posted abt the 3 hidden configuration pages.

I also bought the FS trendnet router for some1 else, and I much prefer this

1. Reset your router to the default settings. This should re-enable the DHCP server. Reconnect your PC to the router via 192.168.1.254 (wired) and get to the configuration page.
2. I'm going to assume that you ONLY want to use this router to connect your XBOX and not use it to connect other wireless clients or extend your network.
3. Configure your router as a "Bridge".
4. On the Wireless settings page, set the mode to "Client"
5. Enter the SSID. And WEP settings for the wireless network you are trying to connect to. (Do a Site Survey and make sure you can see the wireless network)
6. On the TCP/IP page disable the DHCP server and change the Gateway to be the IP address of the other router (eg I have a linksys and I set the IP address for the Gateway to 192.168.1.1)
7. Restart your PC (or at lease reset your network connection) and test that you router connects to the main router and that your PC get an assigned IP address and proper gateway. Check that you PC can connect to the internet.
8. Is your XBOX modded? Mine is modded and I have it set up with a Static IP but I also had to set the proper DNS. If you haven't got to Point 7 successfully, you will have no chance of getting your xbox connected.

Got to step 7 or so... and then the router stopped responding. Naturally, I unplug it and try to access it again using the IP as specified in the manual (as well as the IP I supposedly changed it to). Doesn't work! I am guessing that the DHCP server has now been disabled, which is why it isn't allowing me to access the router's settings anymore. What's the solution? I tried all possible combinations in order to reset the darn thing but to no avail. And no, my internet connection is still not bridged. :(

I bought this same router on boxing day (along with the 2 wireless USB adapters) because there was a boxing day promo at best buy. All I remember the rebate was 110$ for wireless router/usb adapter bundle. It works perfectly, except that I have to figure out what wireless protocol (for WPA) that I should connect to. Also, I have to use my own inventions on how to figure out how to boost the wireless reception. I have to use a cut up beer can to boost the wireless signal and it works perfectly as far as I know.
Right now, I have to figure out how can I complete close 1 open port and make it stealth along with the other "closed" (visible to hackers) ports. I've just downloaded the firmware for that router. When I opened the file, it gives me three .bin files. Can anyone tell me which one should I use? By the way, what are the consequences of updating the router's firmware?
I hope this helps.
- p.s. In the future, when I get a laptop, I can finally connect to the internet wirelessly throughout my home and probably in the backyard (equipment to boost the signal pending).

Only 2 of the files will load. The 1.8m and the one with webinterface or something like that in the filename.
One of the bin files won't load, it's apparently for routers with more than 2M memory.
Uploading a bin file is no big deal, if you load the wrong file, it will just reject it. After loading, you have to wait for it to reboot, that's about it.

How is the PC connected? You need to have an existing wireless router for this to work. That router is the DHCP server.
Did you temporarily disconnect the PC from the existing network and then to the Blanc in order to configure it? If so, then you need to configure that computer's IP manually (eg. IP=192.168.1.2, Subnet=255.255.255.0, gateway doesn't matter). You can then access the Blanc. Alternatively, you can connect both the PC and the Blanc to the existing router and use the latter's DHCP server for the PC (assuming the Blanc is configured to the correct subnet).

Ya, I've tried two of them, they were unreliable as routers. They would lose their connection with my ISP (shaw).
They work reliabily as bridges (like others and I have described in this thread) though.

I mentioned this problem earlier in 2 threads. I think you may be OK, it's just another stupid bestbuy.ca problem, they will probably give you the rebate. However, I just don't want to worry abt a $60 rebate being rejected, so I took it back and bought another one at the store last week.
Thx to a tip from another poster, I asked for the rebate at the cash register and the UPC that was printed on it is exactly the same as the one I bought.
Looks like the bricks & mortar bestbuy has their act together, it's just the online store that's causing so much grief.

There was a similar case with another router deal :

Most of us were confirmed by the B&Ms that the incorrect UPC would be ok, but were later rejected by the rebate center.

Probably a moot point by now, but I just received my router today. It's got the "wrong" UPC code (8788074000017).
I called BestBuy's rebate centre, and they said the rebate form is wrong and that the UPC eligible in their system is the one written above. Meaning the rebate should go through with no issues whatsoever.

I'm going to roll the dice on this one and try for the rebate, despite the wrong UPC code.
I spent a while on the phone with them the other day - they do seem to have the correct one in the system, but they won't fax or send me any kind of assurance. Moreover, they said they'd try to correct it, but the same UPC code keeps showing up on the website (it's dynamically generated, so you'd think they'd be able to fix it by putting a correction in their database somewhere).
Anyhow, I opened a case # with the rebate centre and made them write everything down. I'd advise others to do the same - have a case # handy when it's time to argue for your cash.

I've never used Eudora before so I don't understand why an email program needs open incoming ports, unless you are running some kind of mail server.
To forward ports, it's obviously in "Firewall-Port Forwarding"
Maybe you can try to put your PC into the "DMZ" before messing with port forwarding, are you sure your problem is caused by a "blocked" port?
There is "Port Filtering", but it is disabled by default.

I changed to mail programs to shaws mail ip instead of shawmail and it worked. I guess this router does not auto configure the DNS serversI think the DNS is probably OK. Can you web browse by domain name?
I suspect the problem is due to "shawmail" being just a host name and not including a domain. Have a look at this page:
http://support.shaw.ca/servernames.php
Probably all you need to do is configure a Domain Suffix in your TCP/IP settings on your PC.

has anyone tried to change the IP of the router to something else? (like 198.168.0.254) I'm trying to config the Blanc as a bridge - My DLink router (gateway) IP is 192.168.0.1 and to set the gateway to that it says they both need to be in the same subnet. to do so, I think I need to change the IP of the router. tried to do so several times in the LAN setup page, but the change never seems to happen. I can reset (push the button for 5 secs) and it comes back ok, but have never successfully changed the IP.
I have tried both with DHCP disabled, setting the PC IP to 192.168.1.120 and then 192.168.0.120 and with DHCP enabled, but no joy.
Any advice?

yeah, I had no problem.
I don't have it in front of me, but from memory, I think I followed the bridge wizard (I connected a non-wireless computer directly to the blanc - nothing else). After that it worked for a little, then went wonky. I found I had to make sure the Blanc DHCP's server was disabled, set to an IP on the same subnet as my 'real' router/gateway, etc.

has anyone tried to change the IP of the router to something else? (like 198.168.0.254)
I changed mine to 192.168.0.22 pretty easily, any class C address should work:
Class C networks have addresses from 192.0.0.0 through 223.255.255.0. The network number is the first three octets, being from 192.0.0 through 223.255.255. Each class C network can have one octet worth of hosts.
You might have to adjust the subnet mask if you don't use 192.168.*.*
With mine I just changed the IP and let it restart, and it came back with the new address. I setup mine to be an Access Point, so dhcp is disabled and the wireless packets are simply routed into my local network, so that may have made mine easier, but the IP change went off without a hitch.
One thing you may watch out for, don't have more than one DHCP server on your network. If your gateway is setup to assign IPs to everyone, the dhcp response by the blanc router might cause havoc. If your other router is 192.168.0.1, I would say disable DHCP on the blanc, and set its IP similar to the ones that the Dlink is giving out, and everything should work out fine. (if your home machine is getting assigned 192.168.0.100, make the blanc 192.168.0.111 or similar).

Actually the new wirelss standard's about to be released. Im guessing they're getting rid of the old wireless routers now because of that.I don't buy that. The official 802.11n standard (http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/11/Reports/tgn_update.htm) won't be finalized until almost a year from now. Sure, within 6 months we'll probably see a lot of new pre-802.11n (http://www.wifinetnews.com/archives/cat_80211n.html) equipment that will claim to be upgradable to the final standard. But no big releases by the end of this month.
And in any case that wouldn't explain them taking 802.11g equipment off the shelves. There will be lots of g equipment being sold for at least the next year or so, just as there was lots of b equipment still being sold when g first came out.

I'm on Sympatico, so there does not exist a DNS server to input, they recommend to leave it to blank (auto).. other users were mentioning they could not see some sites too.. this is weird, with my old SMC wired router I could see it fine...

****Today is the last day to mail in the rebate********
Actually, I think the postmark date has to be before Feb 12th, but do they postmark things on the weekend?
Also, looking for some tips here...
The first thing I did was flash the 1.8m "linux-vpn-1.2.7" first, and now the router won't respond to me at all. I cannot even get to the setup page using 192.168.1.254. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem, I changed the password, then tried to get into it, didn't let me log in. I hard rest it, didnt work. I exchanged it. (the tech support couldn't help me either)
We should all email gigafast about this issue to release a firmware to solve this problem( Gigafast is the original manufacturer of the Blac routers)

Built-in dhcp problem after the address range is changed
I spent over an hour to get it up so that I can wipe the content for the refund

I suspect this Taiwan company (http://www.ccandc.com.tw/product/11g-wa-2204a.htm) makes them for both Gigafast and Blanc.

Wow, didn't know that. but it seems they dont offer any firmware upgrades for this specific model.
Take a look at this one: http://www.ccandc.com.tw/Hsu_image/CHT-Router.jpg

Have you tried changing the 254 to a 1 in network connections and your browser? I have the gigafast model and it wouldn't let me connect with 254, does with 1 though. Might be similar.

I've tried connecting with a few different addresses, but nothing. I used to be able to just type the 192.168.1.254 in my browser and get access to the setup screen, but now nothing. Thanks.

I had the same problem, and I called tech support, essentially they told me the unit died. So what I did was I brought it back to Futureshop for a refund.

Actually the new wirelss standard's about to be released. Im guessing they're getting rid of the old wireless routers now because of that.
You mean 802.11N? Those devices won't be ready for a long while.

BTW, I had this returned to Gigafast and they sent me a new one with no problems. Now I have it set up in bridge mode, and have it functioning well when connected to another PC, but I hook it up to my Xbox and it doesn't recognize it.
Has anyone had any luck with this router and an Xbox? It just says no wireless adapter detected...

I haven't hooked it up to my XBOX, but it's not really a "wireless adpater", is it? at least not to the XBOX. The gigafast/Blanc is connecting to the wireless network by itself, then passing a wired connection to your XBOX. check that your DHCP settings (or fixed IP settings, if you prefer) make sense, then plug an ethernet cable from one of your Blanc/Gigafast LAN ports to the XBOX ethernet port, and the XBOX will never be the wiser that it is being fed wireless.

OMG, I think you're right. I did try this, but now I recall that it was before I had the settings all right and that's why it didn't work. I bet it'll work now. Duh. Thanks for taking the time andjules..I'll try it when I get home.

Ummmm, I was so fixed on treating it like a wireless adapter, which it clearly isn't, that when I set things up properly it worked fine.....thanks for the support though....

NOPE. I havent heard of anyone that actually received their cash for this thing. Seems we were all scammed. I bought one of these, so did 2 of my friends. No one has received anything back.
These types of experiences make me leery to value mail-in rebates.

sorry to revive such an old thread, but it appears the blancnetworks.com site is gone... yeah yeah, el cheapo brand so not surprised that it's gone
BUT, does anyone have the latest firmware file for this router? It may be 1.2.10 or something.
If anyone could supply me with the firmware flash files, that'd be much appreciated. thanks!

It's a rebranded Gigafast router. Just use GigaFast (http://www.gigafast.com/products/product_drivers/WF719-CAPR_drivers.htm) for product updates. The latest firmware looks to be 1.4.1. BTW, I love this router. I wish this thing still existed. It's been the best wireless bridge I've ever used.

I knew that it was a rebranded router, but I didnt know that there wasn't any lockout on the firmware types.
cool, I'll have to try that. thanks.
