UPDATE 02/05/06:

just took a look at the upcoming LD's flyer and apparently, it's on sale again for another ~2 wks or so.

starts this Tues Feb. 7th and ends the 19th.

like DVDManiac had stated, only the +Rs are advertised as $20, no pic or mention of the $20 on sale too, but i'd expect that it'd be same price.

-----------------------

UPDATE 01/22/06:

if u look at the online links, it appears that the prices are still $20.

according to online prices, this deal will still be avail. til' Feb. 05.

no need to hurry. still lots of time to buy...

-----------------------

EDIT: seems like this deal is only avail. for westerners since no LD exists in the east....

for those in the east, u can try to do a PM w/ LD using the webpage or online flyer which should be avail. 2moro ...

------------------

last time (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203894) Walmart had'em on sale for $19.77 (Oct) but it didn't last v. long as Walmart jacked up the price back to $24.77.
(it prbly was at that price for a couple wks but ppl were suspecting it was all MIT discs and thus ignored it until the word was spread on RFD stating that those were MIJ TYs...)

starting TOMORROW, LD (London Drugs) will be having a sale on their Sony DVD+/-R 50pk cakes for $20!

LD ($20): Sony DVD-R - 50-pack (http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures/en-US/Product+Detail/Computers.htm?CatalogNavigationBreadCrumbs=Compute rs;Computers;CD-Rs,%20DVDs,%20and%20Diskettes;Recordable%20DVDs;So ny%20DVD-R%20-%2050-pack&CS_Catalog=Computers&CS_RootCategory=Computers&CS_Category=Recordable%20DVDs&CS_ProductID=1081173&ProductTab=1)

LD ($20): Sony DVD+R - 50-pack (http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures/en-US/Product+Detail/Computers.htm?CatalogNavigationBreadCrumbs=Compute rs;Computers;CD-Rs,%20DVDs,%20and%20Diskettes;Recordable%20DVDs;So ny%20DVD+R%20-%2050-pack&CS_Catalog=Computers&CS_RootCategory=Computers&CS_Category=Recordable%20DVDs&CS_ProductID=1326594&ProductTab=1)

http://www.londondrugs.com/msib20/ProductImages/1081173_Large.jpghttp://www.londondrugs.com/msib20/ProductImages/1326594_Large.jpg

i've seen Sony MIJ TYs at LD b4 but i guess it'll be "YMMV" depending on location....

also, i've yet to witness the -Rs being MIJ TYs (only seen MIT) for the 25 and 50 pks but i've seen +Rs being MIJ (for both 25's and 50's)

the MID for the Sony DVD +R if MIJ should be: YUDEN000T02
the MID for the Sony DVD -R if MIT should be: SONY08D1

if u can't find any MIJ TY's at LD, u can always bring the flyer into walmart and get them to 100% match it ;)

dunno if this is a "hot" deal anymore considering the bad news about the bonding issues of TY discs nowadays (which btw is spreading like a virus on RFD lol).... but the deal's there if ur still willing to take the risk ;)

specific post from the DD from his own thread describing the bonding issues found here: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2436749&postcount=2543

Keep in mind. The last time I bought media at London Drugs (which was about a year ago). I was charged a Levy. It made the purchase not a good deal at all. I think the levy was around .75c per CD. (Yep, the last media I bought from LD was CD-R, maybe the levy does not apply to DVD!)

If they still charge this level, it might be very expensive to buy from LD.

Just giving the heads up, and was curious if anyone knows if they still charge (or ever charged) a levy on DVD Media.

Looking at their latest flyer, they still charge levy's on CD media, but it didn't look like they charged it on DVD media. Can anyone else confirm?

um... levies only apply to *CD MEDIA*... they don't apply to DVDs... FYI

and btw, the levy is NOT $0.75 / disc... (that'd be crazy!); it's actually 21c/disc and has been at that rate for a while now.

I had bought Maxell CD-R Audio disks, I guess I paid 77c. I knew it was somewhere around there. It wasn't cheap! I had always bought my media from costco :D

Cool that it does not apply to DVD media.

yeah, it's somewhere around 20c/disc for cd-r's but 79c/disc for cd-r audio's... :!:

Can someone post a little information on why these discs are special? It sounds like they are especially good in the writable disc market.

Also, what are the reasons to choose + vs -? I've always bought whatever the store had. Does my DVD writer do both? It is an 8x Lite-on.

well, b4, MIJ TYs were 1 of the best blank media in the market but now it might not be the case so much b/c of the possible bonding issue w/ TY discs.... :|

the +Rs are MIJ and -Rs are MIT; generally spking MIJ > MIT.

almost all burners nowadays writes both formats, so ur LiteOn likely takes both.

Did the old Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-Rs sold by NCIX have this problem, or has this problem only surfaced in more recent (and higher-rated-speed) discs?

I picked up some 25 pack spindles of Sony +R media at the Sony store this weekend for $9.99 each and they are MIT - I haven't opened them yet cause I wanted to find out if they were any good, opinions?

Too bad there is no LD in S. Ontario :(

the MID for the Sony DVD +R if MIJ should be: YUDEN000T02

The MIJ +R discs I picked up at futureshop with this Media ID code don't burn worth s**t in my NEC 3520 w/ 1.04 firmware. One burned but failed the verify, the second failed right after it started burning. I'm burning at 4x btw for safety (HDD is pretty fragmented)

tempted to open up the MIT discs to see if they are any better :/

Your problem may be that you're burning at 4X. In my experience, 8X TY discs do not like to be underspeeded. Combine that with the fact that the NEC 3520 does a pretty sloppy job on +R TY, and you may well have a combination for coasters.

I picked up one of each tonight from the Vic&41st LD after
both the Brentwood store and (near) Metrotown store were
both sold out. The clerk said that they had lots in their
warehouse and will be in shelves by thursday.
Confirmed, the dvd-r are MIT and +r MIJ.

They had about 20 +Rs at the downtown Vancouver store (Granville + Georgia) stacked on a box near the escalators as of around Tue 16:00. Didn't notice any -Rs in the same area. Maybe they just had them in the regular media section. Don't know, don't care.

YES- Confirmed, the dvd-r are MIT and +r MIJ.....

i'm just curious as to whether or not any1 has seen MIJ stock for the -Rs... (i wanna get a pk ;) )

funny, that's the way i feel about the +R's. maybe i should try bitsetting?

u should...

it's pretty cool/convenient, esp. if u have a really old standalone that can't read +Rs

mahjongmaniac
Jan 11th, 2006, 03:09 AM
but, i burn a lot of disk for my pals (on tier 2 stuff) & compatability for their dvd players would be an issue i rather not deal with. -R's as we know are compatible with more players....

true...

but considering the standalones avail. nowadays, compatibility is not (or shouldn't be) a significant issue anymore...

I don't think there's a good reason NOT to use bitsetting. But I have a BenQ 822 so +R is the way to go for me.

-R's as we know are compatible with more players....

By what? Less than 1% compared to a +R Booktyped as -ROM?

Anyways, go with what works for you.

I had a few successes burning at 8x but as soon as I tried to -ROM bitsetting I think that's when it started screwing up (tried 3.04 and 3.06 bitsetting firmwares) as well as Dee's 2.U3

I think I might have better luck with the MIT +R with my NEC drive

Hi,
This may be a stupid question, but how do you find out if the DVD's you're looking at are MIJ and/or Taiyo Yuden? I hear about these manufacturer codes, but where do you look? Is it on the package (I can't seem to find it), or is putting one of the blanks in your dvd drive the only way?

MIJ is stated on the outside of the spindle pkging (usually around UPC code)

the "TY" code is actually the MID. u need a burner and s/w (DVDinfopro, DVDIdentifier, etc) to find out the MID of the disc

basically, if u can find "MIJ" on the pkging, u can pretty much be assured that u got TYs... :)

as said above, you wont be able to physically see any of the MID code on the discs and the packaging

its just that being Made in Japan and branded sony means that that batch was outsourced to be made by Taiyo Yuden

anyways

The Walmart at Bayview and Major Mack in Richmond Hill had a ton of 8X MIT Sony DVD-R's but I sifted through them and found one MIJ. Sure enough the code is TYG02. Are these the ones with bonding issues or are they ok ?????

i could be wrong but i don't think "ALL" of the MIJ TYs have this issue,... check w/ the DD to make sure.

but yes, the bonding issues exist for TY discs...

the burn quality shouldn't be a prblm tho :)

The DVD+Rs will still be going for $19.99 starting Tuesday, Feb 7th...so maybe one day (Monday) of not selling them at $19.99...didn't see anything for the -Rs.

UPDATE 02/05/06:

just took a look at the upcoming LD's flyer and apparently, it's on sale again for another ~2 wks or so.

starts this Tues Feb. 7th and ends the 19th.

like DVDManiac had stated, only the +Rs are advertised as $20, no pic or mention of the $20 on sale too, but i'd expect that it'd be same price.

and for those who can't find MIJ at LD, u can try PMing walmart, but remember to bring the flyer w/ u as proof.

where do they get these MIJ -R? i thought they stopped making them in japan..

I bought 3 spindles but hope they don't go down more in price after 6 months. I already have too much media stocked up from the last 6 months....
anyone know of any printable MIJ media?

um... keep hopin... lol

blank media prices are like droppin every 3-4 mths (maybe even less)

so p/u what u need now. otherwise, don't as i'd expect cheaper prices a few mths f/ now.

prices prbly won't drop "drastically" so to spk, but they'll still drop a lil bit.

anyone know of any printable MIJ media?

checkout blankmedia.ca or NCIX.com

i think they should have some; other than those^ places i don't recall any other stores that "definitely" carry MIJ IJP media.

nice deal, I always use the +R's and either get TY's from NCIX or MIJ Sonys from walmart. Walmart did have these on for $18.88 I stocked up then. I just got some at regular price they other day and they are still MIJ.

Certain Zellers locations also have the MIJ Sony's. One quick way to tell for the +R is the stopper. It's not round, but hexagonal.

I've found MIJ Sony media at the London Drugs in Kerrisdale, and Ironwood Plaza (Richmond).

For jon604, try the Maxell inkjet printable media, some might be MIJ. One place to check is LD since they also sell single discs (selection may vary).

After some additional tests that were conducted, DD agreed that if you want to buy TY media, the best TY media to get is the Sony branded TY media. Due to the additional quality controls in place at Sony, you will get better bonding than regular TY media. Sony MIJ is the way to go if you want TY media that has OK to good bonding (depending on the batch you receive). :)

hm... weird... a hexagonal stopper on MIJ spindles?

well, i dunno why there's a diff. but for the curious, the 25pks have NO stopper and on the non-printable hub surface; there's some blue letter's imprinted on it saying something like "Sony 8X DVD+R"

anyway, for the MIT spindles, they just have a regular grey round foam on the top of the spindle....

thx4 da headsup. sounds like good news. (haven't been following DD's thread lately)

btw, is this implying that the Maxell MIJs don't have the QC like Sony is enforcing :?: (there's still MIJ Maxells, 8X, avail. at Walmart/FS/BB, reported since last Dec. and i got a batch of the -R at that time.)
