There are so many service charges and administration fees...can these be avoided? Why do so many people still use them?

I have pretty much stop using them. I have like $60 in the account, which I haven't touched in months.
I have a student/under 26 account and credit card with BMO.

I have account @ Citizen's Bank. And I can make withdraws @ HSBC ATMs. That's why I use them.

Hello.
I've been with HSBC since 1996 and has never been so satisfied with a bank (well, as much as is it possible when dealing with a bank...). It simply is the best service I experienced with a bank.
I've only dealt with 2 different persons in 10 years that took care of all my dealings with them. They are negociable, never had to make a fit to get a good mortgage rate or free Interac and they easily wave service fees. Also, they have reasonable opening hours (9 to 5) and not crazy hours like 11:00 to 2PM for teller service. I do not often go to the bank but do not like skipping work when I have to.
Finally, It's the only bank I've seen that has a FREE commercial savings account with checking priviledges when you maintain a minimum amount in the account. Just this saves me hundreds of $ per year.
My only gripe is that they do not have a savings account that matches ING but then, no major bank has one...
I have been recommending this bank to friends for the last few years and no one I know that started doing business with them regreted it.
Hope you find a bank you're satisfied with.
