The Pioneer DVR110 DVD burner is approx. $50 before tax.
The BenQ DW1655 is approx. $70 right now at FS.

Both are same speed, both respetable brands, both have many positive reviews done on them, both are same speed, etc.

The only difference is that the BenQ has lightscribe.

Is it really worth the extra $20 or not?

The Pioneer is not a great drive, for whatever reason.

In the $50 range, the LG 4167 is a better buy.

I tend to think that I will use the Lightscribe technology (I just bought a DW1655) so I felt that it is worth the extra $20 for it. It just looks better than using a Sharpie.

For better looks, I would probably go buy the Epson R200 printer and some printable media.

The new LabelFlash technology looks decent too. Not out yet but should be Q1 2006 according to the news around the web.

Before even THINKING about buying a Pioneer DVR-110D, please check out my review on the Pioneer DVR-R100 (the retail box of the DVR-110D). It's available in the review section at www.cdrlabs.com.

I haven't begun work on the DW1655 review yet, but it's supposed to be quite good. I'll second the suggestion for the LG 4167B though, it seems to be a good stable drive for the most part.

My 110D works fine. If you take a look at the other lightscribe threads, you'll find out that it's not worth it because you need to pay a bit more for the burner, and also lightscribe only works on dvd's that suppose lightscribe. Sharpie or a label is the way to go.

Also check out the NEC 3550, that's a solid drive with great performance around the same price range.

Nec 3540 is a better option as it is cheaper and more dependable.

between the 1655 and the 1640 is it fair to say the only difference (for the stated specs) is the addition of 4x -RWDL?

Actually, they is no difference in specs between the 1640 and 1655 other than Lightscribe. If you don't need Lightscribe, you can always wait for the 1650.

Well I went with the Pioneer and I have no regrets.
I have thrown cheap DVD +R and -R's at it and it takes them, smiles and spits out a perfect DVD.
It also does it in very good time.

I have no complaints, that's for sure.

The BenQ I'm sure is a great drive, but I'm not going to pay $20 extra for lightscribe, and then pay a ton more for lightscribe DVD's. A permanent marker will do the same thing in terms of functionality.

I stand by my choice!
