View Full Version : My computer is F#*%zored - [HELP!] - PSU / MOBO issues

Well last night I was diagnosing my new ram and what not (2 gig platinum OCZ), and realized my CPU was at 81°C with a low load (65° idling), so I was like "OH F#*$!" and shut it down

I cracked the beast open, and started cleaning all my fans, and then on my cpu heatsink, i found a layer of dust... Problem solved.

I cleaned that off, but when getting to it, I had to unconnect all PSU connections to my motherboard. I figured since I have a new Antec 480w sitting beside me, I'd swap em out.

Thats where my problem began. I think in the course of taking out the 20-pin and 4-pin power connectors from my mobo, it ****ed up the socket plugs on the mobo. And as well, when taking off the heatsink, it hit two transistors at the top, slightly bending them (I gently bent them back)

I installed the PSU as you normally would, connected the 20pin and 4 pin connector, connected the cpu fan controller, the case fans (no daisy chaining done), the harddrive, and my video-card and all the other junk.

I plugged it into the wall, turned on the main PSU switch, and the LED activity light in my case jumped on. "Success!" I think.

Then I go to boot... Nothing. The f'ing thing wont boot or power up, its just dead.

I need ALL ideas and help please, I really dont wanna have to haul my case into a computer shop.

Sure you haven't done enough damage already?

So the system powers up, the fans come on and what not, but there's no bios activity or anything on the monitor?

Take out the memory and see what happens on power up.

Nope, nothing powers up. Thats the problem, nothing turns on.

Edit: The 'bent' transistors were not really bent, I just realized it was a gross overstatement. Slightly nudged, about a 5 degree angle

re-seat the ram or try to start with one stick in place. Maybe pull both sticks and carefully put one back in.

If it starts> shut down and carefully put in other stick.

Oh it sounded like it powered up from your explanation.

If there is no power getting to the system whatsoever, it sounds like a power supply problem, or the connection of the PSU to the mobo.

Double check the connections or then maybe try putting the old PSU back in?

The cycle the switch on the back of the PSU. Off for ten seconds and then on. Digital lingo. 1 is on. 0 is off. Sorry if that is too elementary. I never know.

Good point, maybe the PSU is "off".

lol nope its 1

Its on, but still nothing, I am trying the old psu now, and if that fails, I'll put my old mobo back in and give it a go

If the case speaker is connected, it can tell you that the video card is being sensed by the bios. i.e. long whailing sound. no video card. 3 quick beeps no ram on some computers.

Then, card may need to be re-seated.

You're pushing the power button, but nothing is happening? did you check the jumper leading to the power button? Maybe disconnect it, and put it on backwards accidentally? make sure everything is connected tightly...if the green LED is coming on, the mobo is getting power, so odds are, it isn't the psu. You might also try resetting the cmos...take the battery out for about 30 seconds, then put it back in. You'll have to put back the bios settings, but it will probably work.

Did that myself with a brand new system as well, was panicking, thinking I fried it, ripped everything out but cpu and ram, rechecked all the cables and found it was the power connection.

BTW: You can trigger the power button by shorting the jumpers it connects to with a screwdriver. Quick workaround for when you don't want to connect the case stuff.
