The Canon SD500 for $399 is a great deal. Although it's a slightly older model, the only major difference between this and the newer SD550 ($550) is the screen size (2" vs 2.5"). Picture quality will be identical (same lens, CCD).

Been looking for a bit smaller camera.

Those I have seen:

Nikon D50 849$ after "150$ rebate". Crappy. You can get this price anytime in any store. Do a search on the forum, you will find it at 799$ !!

Canon Powershot Pro1 649$ after "250 rebate". This is a 1 year old model that should be replaced soon. Overpriced camera that should be cheaper than that. It's warm at best.

Sony DSC-H1 for 499$ after "150$ rebate". This camera can be found anytime for 529$. So it's more a 30$ rebate. Warm if you can save one tax, else order from an online store.

I dont know for others, I'm shopping for 500-1000$ camera.

I'm might get this one for my gf for her birthday... deals seem pretty decent... it would be nice if it's a Z750 (reg. $499 at FS)... :D

I've been looking for a good deal on Canon Rebel XT or the Fuji S5200 for quite some time now. Any idea if FS or BB would offer a good package?

So far the best deals for Canon XT was $985 at Black's and Fuji S5200 for $399 (expired promo last week from Dell).

I'm looking for a digital camera with printer bundle.

My main criteria is ease of use.

Any experience with any bundles and/or seen deals out there?

I've been looking at the Nikon Coolpix 7600. Price in every store seems to be $359-$369.

I did a search of the big camera discounters in New York and $275 USD seems to be the going rate.

Difference on the dollar is 18% - which makes the Canadian equivalent $325.

So I figure that I have some lattitude to bargain.

Comments?

If you're trying to argue a price down because it's sold cheaper in a major market like New York(where they can get major volume discounts) then good luck.

It's a 5 megapixel camera versus the SD500's 7 megapixels, but that won't make a difference if you won't blow your pictures up past about a 10x12. The two cameras are targeted at different users though, the A610 is more along the lines of Canon's A85/95 series (it's actually a little bit bigger than one of those) whereas the SD500 is much smaller and lighter (and it's metal :) )

You are/were absolutely correct - I went to Henry's this morning - they only had the demo model left - the salesman offered me a big $10 off on the demo. He told me that the prices in Canada bear no relationship to the States, that Nikon cameras in the States have a 90 day warranty. Here it's 2 yrs. Told me Best Buy Canada is NOT a Nikon Canada authorized retailer - their Nikons are grey market.

He also offered me a whopping $10 off their over priced flash memory, and when I told him that other retailers had SD memory much cheaper than $70 for 512 meg, he got insulted and told me that other brands of memory (not Lexar or Sandisk) could damage the camera and the warranty would not cover damage from a memory card.

So, I said "thanks for your time" and walked. :(

It's a pocket-sized camera with a large (2.5") lcd display and 3x optical zoom.

I agree.. if time allowed, it would be an interesting conversation to a challenge him on why it would damage a camera.. and in what way.. given a flash memory has no mechanical parts it's purely 1s and 0s .. if a camera can die because of reading failure then the camera is crappy..

Bestbuy
Samsung Cyber500 $219.99
Samsung Digimax $149.99

Casio EX-Z120 $249.99
Kodak C360 $199.99

Think your best bet on a sub $250 digi cam is the Sony DSC-S60. Last time I checked, Staples had it for $229 and u can probably find a $20 off coupon to bring it down to $209. Theres reviews on the DSC-S90 which is basically the same camera with a bigger LCD.

 I don't like them at all. Last time when I went into there, I wait over 20mins there and no one came to help me. I asked them to open a dv tape and told him I don't like it and gone.

That was my last time ever going into a Henry's.

I got burned by those SOBs a few years ago. They published an anniversary sale advertisement saying that they were giving away gift certificates to the first customers in line at their "Anniversary Sale". The highest value gift certificate was $400 and then others descended in value from that to as low as $20.

So (always up for a challenge) I called their store on Steeles Ave and asked if it was first person in line gets the "highest" gift certificate and was told YES - I even got the name of the person who told me that.

The next day I waited in line for 3 hours (I was the first person to get there), and when the manager arrived, he asked me why was I waiting in line so long, as the gift certificates were in unmarked envelopes and it was "pot luck" who got which value certificate.

I told the manager what his employee told me the day before and he said "too bad she made a mistake".

So I left and sent an email of complaint to the president of the company who replied with a very polite letter telling me "mistakes do happen, sorry you were inconvenienced" and offered NO goodwill gesture for the mistake whatsoever.

BTW that's why anytime Henry's runs the same promo with the gift certificate give-away, there is now a disclaimer at the bottom of the page explaining how the give away works!

I feel sorry that you had to wait for so long but its common sense too that they're not gonna give away a $400 gift certificate to the first person. If that was the case, they would have no business at all.

All good buyer know real good deal come in January/February when they sell everything they couldn't sell on boxing day to get the new stock.

Boxing Day is a scam. There is no real good deal (beside few of them, that are so limited that no one will get it)

If you are looking for a camera under $300.00, most 4+ megapixel cameras should be fine. Shop for features and price.

If you are looking for something in the $300. to $500. range, go for a technological leader like Canon, Nikon or Sony, and less on price alone. These cameras will last longer before becoming obsolescent.

If you want to spend more than $500., you should definitly look at large sensor cameras. Expensive small sensor cameras are going the way of the dodo. The dynamic range from these large sensors is a huge improvement and is the way the industry is going.

These are my picks, may be getting one for GF:

bestbuy
Canon PowerShot A520 $250 - good price on this one, not the smallest cam, but uses AA, has manual adjustments
Canon PowerShot SD300 $290 - pocket size, sturdy, comes with Li-ion battery, not really any manual settings

I havent decided yet, sd300 for portability or a520 for flexibility.

know any where have nikon d70s for sale??

ps: i clicked report the post instead post ^^ :lol:It's on 'sale' at http://www.adencamera.com for $1499 which includes a 1GB Extreme III Card which effectively makes the camera in the $1300-$1400 range (depending upon how much you think the Extreme III card costs).

I bought my D70s at http://www.cendirect.com in August for $1430. Ironically, it's now $1450. However, they are located in Quebec and they only charge $12.95 for next day shipping plus they don't charge PST so if you live in Ontario, the pre-tax price is about $1350. They also have the Lexar 1GB 80x CF for $126. This combo, including shipping is still cheaper than Aden Camera. However, there might be more value in the Extreme III over the Lexar 80x for you.

Both are good value.

ps. It's $1399 @ Henry's. You can PM at Cendirect and get it for 8% cheaper (because you don't have to pay PST if ur in Ontario) which makes it 'seem' like $1315 before tax!

The Canon A520 is a good camera but it's slow after you use the flash. People have reported that it takes around 7 seconds before you can take another pic after the flash has been used. The 2 batteries is slowing the camera down (A510, A520) as opposed to the 4 used in the A70/75/80/85/95s. If you dont need alot of manual controls I suggest the Sony DSC-S60 for $209 (after coupon) at Staples. I myself spent alittle more and got a Sony DSC-P200 off eBay. Sub $250 I would suggest Sony S60, Sub $300 I would get the SD300 for a point and shoot, limited manual controls camera. If you hunt on eBay you might find some good cameras around the $300 range, but theres no gurantee since it's usually the auctions that gives you the good deal, the merchants usually just charges just under full price. No camera is perfect, just find one that has the features that you would like on a camera.

Review sites I would look at...

www.dcresource.com
www.dpreview.com
www.imaging-resource.com

All 3 sites have some really picky reviewers that would not hesitate to give the pros and cons of the camera.

Anyone know if the SD300 is any good or have any personal experience with it? Or know if the price posted by Best Buy (~ $290) is a good deal?

The thing that worries me is that all the reviewers at dpreview.com are saying that the LCD breaks really quickly and this is a known problem. However, I know people that have the camera and none of them have had an issue with it. And none of them, are by any means, very careful people.

Has anyone had any experiences with it or know if it's on sale elsewhere for a better price? I was originally thinking of getting the SD400, but for $100 cheaper, I'd rather get this if there are no problems with it!

Has anyone had any experiences with it or know if it's on sale elsewhere for a better price? I was originally thinking of getting the SD400, but for $100 cheaper, I'd rather get this if there are no problems with it!Two of my friends recently acquired the SD300. One is a long-time Canon fan. He has the Digital Rebel EOS and needed a P&S so he got the SD300 with Airmiles. He loves it because of the portability over his SLR. Plus he is familiar with the menus.

Another friend got the SD400 initially from FS, but then called me to ask about the SD300 which was $300; $100 less than the SD400. He's never owned a digicam before so I advised him to get the cheaper of the two cams. So far he likes it.

I own 4 digicams but have never owned a Canon. Mostly Fuji and Nikons. I think a better deal is the Fuji FinePix 5.1MP Digital Camera (F460) at FS for $300 (regular price!). The only drawback is the xD card.

One other thing that they switched, and I didn't notice is the size of the images. When making prints with most cameras you have to crop the top and/or bottom to make it fit onto paper at the lab. My first digicam, the Fuji MX2700 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujimx2700/) , has a max res of 1800x1200 and prints fine because it is 3:2. However, more recent P&S have a ratio of 4:3 and I have to crop. It pissed me off because I shot a few thousand photos in a year and didn't realize until I tried to print recently. There are a few, but not enough, P&S cameras with a 3:2 ratio.

As for the price, it's not really cheaper than before as FS had it for $300 for most of December until they ran out of stock. If you buy it with your gold card, you can extend the warranty for a year. If it hasn't died by then, you will probably be wanting a new camera by then anyway.

I bought the KODAK Camera from FS. I tried 4 MP and 5 MP pictures on the same camera. I think 1 MP is a much difference ... do you think that ?
I assume also it is a slow Camera (taking pictures at a slow rate).

1 MP is not much of a difference at all. If you are displaying them only on your screen then they are nothing at all. Your screen is probably not much denser than 1800 x 1200; this is about a 2MP image. You can't squeeze more info into a screen pixel and the quality will probably vary with the quality of your monitor.

Even if you print, it's not much of a difference. When you print at a lab, you will lose resolution right away when you have to crop your photos. These cameras produce images in a 4:3 format, however, most photo labs will print your photos in a 3:2 format. This will cut off the top and/or bottom of your photo. With a 4 MP camera, you will lose about 450K pixels and with a 5 MP camera, you will lost about 400K pixels.

If you're only viewing on the screen, pixels don't matter. If you're printing, then get all the pixels you can afford. However, the more pixels, the more memory you will need. The camera and memory will also need to be better/faster to store photos faster so you can shoot faster.

If you are looking to print many photos, it probably is best to get a camera that can produce images in a 3:2 format so you won't end up cutting off the subject's head (or feet) when you print the photos. Some companies that produce cameras with 3:2 are Fuji, Casio, Panasonic and every d-SLR is 3:2. This is all I know or have researched. If there are more, please respond!

I own 4 digital cameras, the lowest res is a Fuji MX-2700 (2.3 MP 1800x1200) and the highest is my Nikon D70s (6MP 3008x2000). I can't see much of a difference between the two when they are printed. On screen they look identical.
