Welp,

I missed the better Lenovo deals, so now it looks like I'll be trying to hunt down a laptop elsewhere for my Mother. Budget is about ~1000. I'd Like a P4-M and DVD+\-RW with a decent quality screen.

Does anyone remember if there were any good deals last year?

Why would people buy a Lenovo over any other big name laptop out the (e.g. Toshiba, HP)? Can someone explain how they are special?

Do 12" ibooks ever go on sale during boxing day??? If so, which stores and is it any better than the Apple educational discount? Thanks.

Has IBM/Lenovo had good boxing day sales in the past?

They just told me on the phone that this last pre-boxing-day-sale was it, and they won't be having a boxing day sale, but I'm skeptical.

Does anyone recall how good the IBM boxing day sales are? Are they WOW BANG SNAP! special, or are they merely ho-hum?

Well, I donèt know if itès changed with the acquisition by Lenovo, but the IBM Thinkpads were some of the best-built solid laptops I've use in a long time. I've used almost every brand of laptop for field work, and the thinkpads can take a lot of punishment and keep on going (i.e. falling off a 7-foor stepladder while powered on and surviving without damage).

The HPs are pretty crappy, and Compaq used to be great, they've sunk down to HPs level since the merger. The high-end tochibas are really good too. I personally own a Powerbook, and while it's well-designed, it nowhere as rugged as the Thinkpads.

This thread would be useful if we can accumulate a list of recommended laptops in specified price ranges and a target price. It's obvious a $1200 Centrino is better than a $700 laptop that weighs more than your mother in law, but they're two different classes. If someone could tell me that $1000 is the lowest price offered so far for the $1200 laptop, maybe I'd consider that over the $700 tank that doesn't go on sale.

I too am looking for a lappy around the $1000 range ... Centrino or Turion only. Think this is possible?

^ Yep, possible, I don't know about Lenovo but other brands for sure. By the way, why is it that these Lenovo laptop specs are really crappy compared to similar priced Toshiba's and HP. Is it because these Lenovos have some uber quality?

Me too. Centrino or Turion. I'm reluctant to get a Lenovo even though they are durable because their prices seem higher.

I am looking for a sub $1000 laptop

The US had some kick ass deals around Black Friday last month. I am looking for around the same thing.

Those are probably deals where I have to line up tho :(

You don't need a Centrino. If you can get a Celeron-M with a Intel Wireless, that's pretty darn decent already.

Too bad the Yonah only comes out after Christmas...

I own a Celeron-M Lenovo R50e. Solid build but you can get better performance for the same price. Great for professionals, but not actually very ergonotical... No Windows key, two USB ports on the wrong side of the computer...

Crazy brand loyalty, similar to those guys who ONLY buy Volkswagen.

I like them too, but I'm not fanatical about it like some, and also believe there are some great deals in other brands as well. In my experience, there are good and bad laptop models, and you're better off following user experience on that basis.

Personally, I think this is a great base line laptop for $899.00

Not as good as some of the Dell deals, processor is ok, hard drive smallish and speed base line, dual layer DVD burner is a bonus, 512 MB memory is great, video is ok for non-gamers, but what really sells me on this one is the 15" screen. This screen to me is just as nice as a Sony and is simply gorgeous.
Only other problem with this laptop is that it's not on sale. But value wise I think this a good laptop to measure other deals against.

do y'all think about the $999 Gateway "special buy" laptop?
http://boxingday.redflagdeals.com/index.php/boxingweekflyers/image_full/26/

It seems to be within the specs I'm looking for (Centrino, 14", hopefully under 5.5 lbs...) but I'm not sure how good of a "deal" it is...

She's a 40GB unit though, my customer was deciding between this and the $899 toshiba celly 14 incher and she took that over this for obvious value.
