are these the ones that are meant to be enjoyed raw?
or the ones that you can steam with like black bean sauce or something... they don't look that big... I'd assume they would get very small if cooked.

Good find.
Ocassionally, Sobeys, Dominion and Loblaws seem to have the boxes of live oysters at a similar price.
I bought themover the summer. they were pretty tasty. Kind of small, but still good.
If you're concerned about freshness, Smell them after shucking them. If it smell foul (like decay) don't eat it. If it smells like the sea, it's good to go.

They can stay alive outsode fo the water for a while. Their Shells are air tight.
Oysters have to stay alive outside water all the time. If tide is low, they become exposed to air. Their shells close tight and as soon as tide rolls in, they're submerged again.
PS> DO NOT Eat any open oysters. If they're open already, stay away from them.
In order to open an oyster, you'll need a shucker. Your local grocery store usually carries them. They might be on a peg rack or something like that.
Looks like a mini blunt dagger.

They had that a couple weeks ago but I didn't see it in my own eyes. I went to three different stores on three consecutive days and they both said 'the next day we will receive them'. I end up went to TNT supermarket and bought a dozen myself for $1.49@

Please go buy a shucker.
I don't know if you're like me, but I would rather spend $1.99 than bend my butter knives to crap.
Also, a shucker has a broad handle, easier for leverage and a tiny shield that protects you from slicing yout hand open.
A wothwhile investment in my opinion.

You definitely need a shucker.
A butter knife is completely inadequate for the job.
A proper oyster knife has a tapered tip and a much thicker blade then a regular knife.
Built strong.
I have snapped a few reg knives trying to open oysters

Anyone know a good way to clean bulk oyster.
I find when i buy a box like this, that the oysters are very dirty (muddy) and even after giving a good scrub and rinse, when I open them there is a ton of dirt around the edges.
This inevitablet gets into the oyster liquor and makes then less appealing.
There must be some maritimers on RFD that can weigh in on the problem

Second that recommendations...Thats their regular price...
and they also usually have different types of oysters as well..
Very good seafood market..
Although the cheapest way to get large quantities of oysters is ordering it direct from the east coast..
I just got delivery of 2 boxes of live oysters from PEI. We know a distributor there and they ship them to us for ~$80 a box of 300...
makes for great xmas dinner appetizers...

Nope, but I once got sick from eating some uncooked chicken at the Mandarin. Haven't been back since.
2 Years and running strong!
Smell is the key. if it smells like dirreah, or had a strong foot smell, don't eat it. it's probably bad, and on the bright side, when you buy the box, you have 32 other oysters to chose from.

Went to THREE different Loblaws to get this.
First one..."We didn't receive any."
Second...had no clue. I had to show them the add. They didn't have it.
Third...they had 2 boxes.
I picked up one box. The box shows that they are from PEI. I used a flathead screw driver to shuck them, lol. They were ok; a little dirty; some contained very small oysters within.

Small oysters always taste better.
Angels On horseback, Devils on horseback or even Oysters Rockafella nothing compares to raw oysters.
If any of you ever visit trinidad you will see road side vendors selling Oysters as well as Conchs each with their own cocktail sauce.
It's the greatest thing on this planet.........a few oysters and a cold coconut.

Picked some up at Lobs on Dupont (at Christie).
A couple of bad ones in the box (believe you know which ones are off right away) but all in all very nice.
Not as cheap as Diana's on Lawrence but way more convenient for me.

Friends picked up a box on Boxing Day from the Loblaw's on Bullock Drive east of McCowan (in Markham, ON) and then i went to get a box from there too, yesterday. From the box I got, only one bad. Quite a few tho are SKINNY. There were a few fatties that were good. I bought the oyster knife (shucker) for $3.88 + tax (also at Loblaws, hanging from the corner of the aisle in kitchenware).

who the hell defaced the oysters?
Sea Urchin Roe goes with the eggs and thats it.
The salmon Roe does not belong there.
The oysters dont need anything but your mouth.

I'm no culinary expert but for those of you who are looking to get the dirt off and out of the oysters, you may want to try soaking them in salt water. I may be wrong but that is how you get them out of mussles. You just put the shell creature in cold water with lots of salt and they will spit out the dirt inside.
The other tip is out of a book named "kitchen confidential". You may want to ask the guy at the seafood counter/store what day they recieve the new shipment. ie. Montreal (Tues) Toronto: Dominion @ Yonge and Church (Wednesday). The tuna steak they had there didn't look very fresh so I asked how rare I could cook it and the seafood guy said that if I wanted it sashimi grade I would have to come on a Wed. when they first get them in.
Hope this helps
