not much, hid the ring in the hat of a stuffed toy, sitting on her bed.
Prior to this, I had all kinds of great ideas, but lost all nerve that day.
I was scared *****less.

You guys are looking at the engagement ring together? I thought the guy is just supposed to get the ring without letting the girl know.

lol. I've actually seen a lot of people type that on here, and had meant to ask.. but didn't for whatever reason. How do you look at engagement rings with your gf without having engaged? When I was proposing to mine.. I had her friend take her out under the pretense of looking for a ring that she would like.. and take some notes for me.
If you're looking at rings with a girl, wouldn't you have already have to propose? And wouldn't it lose a little bit of the effect, if the girl not only knows that you're going to ask, but basically bought her own ring that you're going to give her?

I found a goldsmith in the distillery district. Leif Benner (www.leifbenner.com) Awesome guy, quality work. I highly recommend.
Anyhow, her brother was in on it, he knew I was going to propose. I eventually asked her parents for permission and so they were on it too. Sorta hinting at her that "He's going to give you something really great for your birthday!!"
Her birthday was on June 24th, Yea i took her to the CN Tower for lunch.. got drinks.. she was like "omg this is it.. hes gonna ask me..."
And no. I didn't. She went home that night and was totally in a headspin.. Happy that I took her to a nice Birthday, but in a total state of "WTF!"
next on our agenda was:
- A Canada Day Cruise in the Toronto Harbour....
- MY birthday on July 4th (Which I told her I wanted to go parachuting for)
- A trip to New Jersey to visit family on the weekend of the 8th.
- A family reunion on the 15
At this point she obviously knew I had a ring, just didn't know when I was going to ask her!
Her brother was hinting (on purpose) that wouldn't it be great if I did it at the picnic, or with everyone together in New Jersey... Just to torture. I'd never do that to her. lol
But she was hardcore thinking "OK yea.. Cruise is romantic, there will be fireworks.. Thats definately when hes' going to ask"
Yea so we ended up having a Canada day Yard sale in Wasaga Beach (theres a post somewhere in the forum about it btw)
So by then she was pretty distraught, but she couldn't do a damn thing about it. It was HILLARIOUS!
There was eventually a change in plans that I announced to her.. Although I wanted to go parachuting on my birthday, I actually had set the date the day before.. July 3rd. Why? Well... Who wants to propose on their birthday.. Thats just seems... i dunno.. takes away from the moment I feel.
Let me tell you. Concealing a 10g ring in a bright red jumpsuit is a hard task. Especially when you are going up 4000 feet and DO NOT WANT TO LOSE IT!
The jump took the whole day due to training and plane overheating issues.. but finally around 5:30pm I landed, gathered up my parachute and walked towards everyone. She was impatient as she was waiting almost half a day for me to jump, but I was pretending I was "tired" from all the lugging of the parachute and had to sit down for a sec.
Then my "leg was itchy" so I had to reach in the opening of the jumpsuit to get the ringbox..
Instead of sitting, I was actually down on one knee.. and asked:
"Will you marry me?"
And she was stunned for a moment. Then came the tears, and she eventually said yes.. between sobs :p
Now.. The funniest moment of this whole ordeal is this..
They had a fresh roll of film and her brother was in charge of it that day.
She always complained that neither of our parents had pictures of the day that they got engaged so she was gung-ho about having pictures of the moment I was down on one knee.
Well. In her excitment, she snapped off like 10 shots while I was in the air, and when her brother heard the camera rewinding, he told me that his jaw dropped.... but he couldn't say anything for obvious reasons..
She felt so bad, but its a big inside joke now.
I love her!!!

If you are good at javascript, ya just go to weddingwindow.com and sign up a for a free trial. Get all the script you require and set it up on your own server.
For the most part, that what we did. But then it got elaborate due to polls and guest administration and we ended up shovelling out the money for the site :p
I still run the index from my home server tho. I setup an email server on it too, so having the domain is quite worth the money i paid for it! I'm thinking of alway having a domain from now on.. I don't want my kids relying on anonymous web based email. (and when they are older I can monitor their inboxes) lol
Also... THANK YOU for the congrats :P
Over at the weddingbells.ca forums, no one gives two *****s.. It definately lacks the RFD flavour. This is far more "home" forums to me. :P
Although... I will say, in terms of making online "deals".. I have sold an item or two, way over the price of what its worth.. like a 500mhz laptop with a 4gb hdd for $375 (haggled down from $400). That would not happen here...noooooo way

On our 1.5 year anniversary we had a romantic dinner, and I bought some roses and flowers for my girl. I also bought her a Wunderbar, her favourite chocolate bar.
Irionically enough I came home late from work, as our office had flooded while I was buying her the flowers.
After I got home we had a romantic dinner, and I laid the flowers on our bed. I also tied a string from the chocolate bar to the ring box, and hid the box under the flowers with the chocolate bar beside it.
I asked her to grab the chocolate bar, she pulled out the ring bow with it, and opened the ring box. I took the ring from it, went down on one knee, and askd her to marry it. After she cried yes, well, the rest of the night is personal ;)

I am not married or engaged so I have no personal stories to share, but I can tell my best friends.
He had purchased the ring and showed it to me, so I knew for a couple months before it happened. He was going on a trip to Switzerland with his girlfriend and told me he was going to do it there. Anyway, one day while they were snowboarding a couple thousand feet up, he proposed to her on the top of the mountain.

Here's the email I wrote about my engagement:
Hey guys,
As you may or may not be aware, I got engaged on Friday August 26, 2005. I cannot express in words how happy I am at this very moment but I have found that the more and more I tell the story, the less and less interesting I make it because it becomes old hat. So for the benefit of telling a story correctly I will tell you all how it all unfolded from the guys' point of view.
On August 17th I picked up the ring from my jeweller, Troy Shoppe Jewellers and the little hamsters in my head started to stretch as they knew that a workout was coming their way in the near future. The following Sunday, August 21, I went to a family BBQ at Salima's parents house and got the usual ribbing about when I would propose. That really didn't sway me, I promised myself that I would do it when the time was right. I did however find out that Salima's aunt and uncle who were staying with them were leaving to go to Toronto on the 27th. This stuck out in my head as both Salima's aunt and uncle were an important part of the family. I decided that I would do it before they left so that they could share in the celebrations and thus the ideas started to flow. I had decided the next day that Friday, August 26th would be the day and started to plant some seeds.
On the Monday, I enlisted the help of Salima's good friend Mark Stephenson. At this time the ideas were a bit sketchy but I had some general ideas in my head. I knew that Salima was planning on going to go to the GlobalFest fireworks competition on Friday night so ideas started to form around that venue. It worked out well because it was something that was planned out ahead of time and I didn't suggest it so Salima would have had no suspicion as to what was happening.
On the Wednesday I talked to the fantastic people at GlobalFest as well as asked Salima's parents for her hand in marriage. I had initially called to inquire about their VIP tickets which allowed the ticket holder to go to the VIP Village which had entertainment, free food and the best vantage point to see the fireworks. I mentioned that I was planning on using GlobalFest as a venue in which to ask Salima to marry me and the wheels were in motion. I was passed on to the voicemail Executive Director, Lindsay Dann and I left her a message to call me back. I was called back 5 minutes prior to leaving for lunch with Salima's parents by DJ Kelly, the Marketing and Communications Director for GlobalFest. He told me that he had just gotten engaged 2 months prior so he knew exactly what I was going through. He offered his assistance for anything that I was planning to do and told me he would get me a couple of VIP tickets in order to propose. Now things were starting to come together. On my way to lunch I was pulled over by a police officer for having tinted windows but I was so anxious about talking to her parents it didn't even phase me. At lunch, I talked to Salima's parents and they were very pleasant and eventually said yes after I got them all doped up on free breadsticks and salad :P When I got back to the office after lunch I talked with DJ again to finalize the plans a little more. We agreed to meet on Thursday at lunch at the fireworks site to plan out the events at hand.
On Thursday I met with DJ at Elliston Park, the site of the fireworks display and we went over what was going to happen. He told me that he would check with the hospitality manager on whether or not I could use one of the tents to propose but I could be out of luck and have to propose in front of all the VIPs in attendance that night. I had also met DJ's finance, Christine who was a gem as well. So the plan was set for the most part and Friday I had to make it happen.
On Friday I woke up at 8:00am and was a bit nervous but not too bad. I had taken the day off work to prepare for everything I needed to do, however, I had given instructions to our administrative assistants to advise all callers that day that I was in an all day meeting with Imperial Oil. I had told Salima that I was going to be in a meeting all day but sometimes she is either absent minded and calls the office anyways. I just wanted to make sure my bases were covered. I also told her that I was leaving straight after work to visit my best friend's new born baby in Olds and for her not to call as every time she calls, and I'm out of the Calgary area, my bill goes up by $10. Now that I had Salima off my back for the entire day I started with the tasks set out before me. The first order of business was to go to the GlobalFest offices to pick up the VIP tickets and parking passes. Christine was there and was gave me 4 VIP tickets and 2 parking passes rather than what was planned for (3 VIP tickets and a parking pass). This made things much much easier as it allowed Salima's two best friends to be with her for this big moment as well … and the parking passes are GOLD … just ask anyone that goes to GlobalFest and attempts to park. Then I did some running around to pick up some items for the evening. At lunch, I met another one of my good friends and went to pick up some roses and go for lunch. The whole time we were talking, I was absorbing nothing … all I was thinking about was what could go wrong, though they were very key in calming my nerves. I then went to go get the ring cleaned at Troy Shoppe Jewellers as it had been handled by so many people already. After that I went home to 'relax' but I was starting to hyperventilate and panic. You see … I'm a planner and when I have to rely on other people it makes me a bit nervous … especially for this particular occasion.
At 6:30pm I left to go to GlobalFest in order to meet with Karen. At this time, I was still unclear as to whether or not I had a tent in which to propose. When I got there I was relieved to find that I did in fact have a tent all to myself and they had actually assigned two volunteers, Steve and Dave, to help me out with anything I needed that night. Steve and Dave were super nice guys and really helped settle my nerves. After setting up the table with candles, rose petals and bubbly, I sat around an waited. It was the longest hour and fifty minutes of my life. The plan was to bring Salima to the tent at 9:20pm to propose so I had to wait in the corner of the tent so that in case she was in the VIP area, she didn't see me in one of the windows. It was excruciating. Thankfully, I talked to just about everyone I could think of in order to pass the time so this might be the first time you have heard from me since Friday night.
At 9:20pm I got a call from Mark who was supposed to be bringing in Salima to the tent and he sounded a bit panicked because he couldn’t find the right tent. Eventually he found the right tent and brought Salima in. When she saw me she was completely shocked. She completely bought the story that I was in Olds for the evening and had a look of disbelief in her eye. I took her over to the table and got down on my knee and as I was about to propose, a volunteer, Ian, popped into the tent and started taking pictures. I took out the ring and asked Salima to marry me. She said yes right away … thank God …and we toasted the occasion with Salima's friends Mark and Katie. We were then whisked away by the volunteers to four seats that were reserved for us on the water's edge and just as we sat down, the fireworks commenced. We watched the fireworks for about 20 minutes and enjoyed our first few minutes as future husband and wife.
There were so many people that I would like to thank for making this moment possible, first and foremost, the volunteers at GlobalFest. They are truly amazing people and it was amazing to see that they wanted this moment to be as perfect as I did. Also, Mark and Katie for bringing Salima to the tent and keeping her completely in the dark. Salima's parents for bringing such a wonderful person in to this world. The Commercial Services Group at ATCO Electric for giving me the time to make this happen and last but not least, Salima Tejpar for allowing me to be a part of her life. Without all these people, this could not have happened.
I know I have been rambling on for a while now so I will let you get back to your lives. Thanks to all the people that have congratulated us and wished us the best.

She felt so bad, but its a big inside joke now.
I love her!!!
thats so cute!!! you ever got your own website.

Congrads man. The engagement ring you got for your fiancee is so nice. Do you mind share how did you find the right diamond and style of the ring for her? How did you go about it?
Sure!
The whole thing was communication. Whenever we were in malls, she'd want to stop into Peoples' etc and I'd take note over the ones she coo'd over.
She had made the preference of "Princess cut" diamonds. they are basically square in shape, when you look at them from the top of the ring. We both like white gold over Yellow gold. I like the shine of silver, but the untarnishableness of gold :P She likes it, because it goes with everything! (typical girl!) It is different though:)
The other style she liked a lot was the 3 tier setting (2 side stones and a centre stone)
So, the diamonds are a "E" Colour (they are near-white), ,VVS1 (they have imperfections, but only viewable at 30x magnification..so no human eye can notice, nor can you see with a regular magnifying glass. )
The centre stone is a 1ct, the two sidestones are 0.5ct
The gold is 14 karat white gold. We were going to get 18 karat, but I read somewhere that 14 karat was a harder gold and its polished look stayed longer without regular cleanings. Its quite true!
I did a lot of net research on diamonds. I'd have to Google it all again, but the informations out there.
The bands are also going to be 14 karat white gold, to match the engagement ring.. Since I have really thin fingers, a big thick manly ring would not be very appropriate.. so instead I'm getting two thin rings created and fused together...with 7 little .20ct diamonds around the circumfrence.
for HER band, she's getting 17(!!!!) 0.3ct diamonds side by side for the half of the ring (the top half of course)
That's all the details that comes to mind at the moment at least.
We went to get the bands ordered at the beginning of December, with all the work he's doing, we'll probably be able to get the finished product mid January! I'll be sure to post pics on the website (and remind you here if you so wish) of the rings. I'm excited!!
Just did a google search, here's an article on Leif that was just a couple days ago!!
