I was just buying cd's and saw it advertised on the main page and I was like this is a mistake but the stamp on it even said 93% off. Amazon.ca has deals like this for like a night or even two hours if they have alot at their warehouse. Then its gone. I bought a Cd once was like 31.99 regular price (2cd) and hot deal was 11.99 so it happens but who knows but if its a mistake lets push for to get the price hehe.

guys...for all you non-techno wizzes out there...its not that difficult to program an AUTOMATIC CALCULATOR..ahaha...

that's why you see the bubble saying 93% off...you think someone at amazon would calculate the percentage off on all 1 million of their products?

ahaha...that bubble adjusts automatically to sale prices...so if they typo'd the sales price...that bubble would be equally affected...

Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items in our catalogue are mispriced. Rest assured, however, that we verify prices as part of our shipping procedures.

If an item's correct price is lower than our stated price, we charge the lower amount and ship you the item.
If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we--at our discretion--will either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation."

----If it doesnt go through I am not to blame but I agree with the little bubble, it say 93% off
unless that thing is like automated or something and whatever price they write it reflects the percentage off in the bubble. I pray it is correct.

Yeah, something seems wrong with the site..

Their #1 bestselling TV series (Doodlebops Volume 1) is $250, while Volume 2 (number 2 on the bestseller list) is $17. And they're charging $40 for the Trailer Park Boys Christmas Special DVD when it should be <$20.

Hopefully they still honor the prices!

I guess no need to pm futureshop which would never happen anyways.

Hopefully there's no complaining after this deal doesn't go through. I love the american deal sites with the guys that say "I'm going to sue them if they don't deliver" or "my friends a lawyer we can start a class action law suit" if it goes through that would be amazing and probably my first.

I've had about 5 orders cancelled due to pricing errors on amazon.com and tons elsewhere. The best one on amazon.com was some 100 DVD history of televison box set it was like 3 dollars 99.9% off at the time order 10 of them to get free shipping and probably 5000 other people did the same.

Just so everyone knows .. Amazon allows you to go back in and edit your orders .. combine them .. add and subtract items .. even change payment method .. just not apply coupons (that has to be done the very first time)

Also I just noticed that Amazon.com (USA) has similar pricing errors...

errr .. maybe not .. was looking at the Matrix 10 disc set .. seems cheap to me.

Absolutely not. They send a generic email saying that they have it somewhere in their policy which gives them right to cancel any order for some reason in case of these.

If our orders get canceled I say we boycott Amazon. They sure seem to be having many of these "pricing errors". I bet they do it on purpose to generate buzz and traffic to their site.

Yeah, right.

Even if they are devious little buggers who are only out to generate buzz, they still have incredible prices, still have terrific customer support, and still offer a wider selection than anywhere else. Can Chapters match this? Not a chance. Futureshop/Bestbuy? Uh uh. You can boycott it all you want, but even if the orders don't go through, I'll still shop there - and so will you, I'll bet dollars to donuts.

As expected, Amazon has welched on this deal. I just got this e-mail:

Hello from Amazon.ca.

We have new information about your order and need to hear from you
before we proceed.

We're sorry, but we've learned the price of the following item has
increased:

"Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy
Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" [DVD]
OLD PRICE NEW PRICE
CDN$ 12.66 CDN$ 99.97

We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this change in
price might cause. We hope you'll understand that, with several million
items listed on our Web site, it's unfortunate but inevitable that some
items occasionally will be priced incorrectly.

As stated in our pricing policy-which is posted online in our Help
department - if we discover an incorrect price, we'll notify you to
obtain your approval of the new price before we proceed with the order.

That's a lame cop out by Amazon, they could at least admit it was a price error on their behalf, and then deny the orders (which I wouldn't have a problem with).

But to pretend it wasn't any fault on their part and call it a "increase in price" that just so happenned to occur today is just lame.

They haven't sent out letters against Family Guy yet, (well for me that is) but if you look at the status in your order it says now :

Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story
Usually ships in 4-6 weeks (but may not be available at all)

their email directs you to their site where they ask you to approve the new price... but it shows the old price again. I suggest again that they are showing that this was a legitimate price, and they are trying to change it after the fact.

i got one of each

family guy
lotr
star wars
matrix
bob

i got 1 email only stating the wrong price of the star wars

when i check account, bob is still at ~30, family guy went to 99, lotr still at ~20, star wars went to ~70, matrix went to ~60

so bob and lotr is still at the error price in my account

in the email, they make it sound like a bait and switch too, they should have just automated the email to say it was a price error, not a price increase...you cant increase a price later after a agreed purchase price...

but its a good thing amazon has some boil plate terms in their conditions to protect themselves (good thing i took business law), the law is still sketchy re:online merchants

You can go into your account and delete both. You'll have an account that's not linked to a credit card or an address. Or, if you want to, you can change your address to something completely random.

Do you want to know why I like the Amazons? Three years back I ordered a book from Amazon.co.uk (poetry not available on this side of the pond). It arrived with some shipping damage. I emailed them and asked them what to do, and they sent me another copy of the book, for free, and said I could keep the first copy.

Two years ago, I mistakenly ordered a book that I found out months later I didn't need. I asked them if I could return it for a refund, and they not only did so, but they paid for shipping.

This year, there have been two orders that have arrived damage - one from Amazon.com, one from .ca. The Canadian site made it very easy to send the items back, but sent me new ones even before I did so. The American site, like co.uk, said it would be too expensive for them to ship back to them the damaged books, so they sent me a new order with a new set of books. Total cost for the .com shipment was about $200 for 3 books (again, relatively rare, hardcover, and somewhat specialised).

Also this year, one of the Schweppes coupons didn't work for me, so they contacted me and sent me a new code. I found out later that Schweppes was supposed to deal with it, not A.ca.

Finally, last Christmas, I sent them an email telling them how much I appreciated doing business with them and let them know I appreciate both their prices and their wonderful customer support. Their response? They sent me a $10 gift certificate.

Every single business, whether online or off, has pricing errors. It's life. What makes a company great is how they deal with customer problems, and I've never felt slighted, ripped off, or maligned by anything they've ever done. The Amazons have great prices and a great inventory. They make it easy for individuals to sell stuff through them. Amazon.ca doesn't charge me PST, and they ship very quickly. Amazon.com is shipped from Canada, so there's no brokerage and no taxes.

I've had bad experiences with Chapters in the past. For instance, I bought a $20 membership for decreased prices, and halfway through the membership, they changed the terms of service (dropped online discount to 5%, for instance). I emailed to complain, and they essentially told me that they couldn't do anything, and that I was stuck with the membership (not even a partial refund). A book arrived damaged before this, and they essentially told me that it was my fault and they weren't going to refund it or do anything for me. Why should I shop at a store that treats me like dirt?

I've put over $1500 worth of purchases this year alone through the Amazons, including most of my Christmas shopping. A single pricing error isn't enough to get me to shop elsewhere. If you refuse to shop at every store that makes mistakes with pricing, then you're not going do be doing any shopping any more.

While I'm not surprised by the latest events, I think this can be considered fraud. Luring people to their site and then swtching prices? C'mon. Other website owners would be drooling just over the site traffic that Amazon has generated.

I guess we're lucky they didn't threaten us with physical violence. (http://thomashawk.com/2005/12/abusive-new-york-camera-store.html) ;)

They will all be cancelled and amazingly enough the "best sellers" are up to 30% off and the list is now all of the DVD's that were "incorrectly" priced.

The CSR at Amazon tried to tell me that one was a price error and one was a stocking availabilty issue. Funny since the email offered it to me at a higher price and it's available online with shipment in 3 to 4 days ...

I have filed my complaint with the Better Business Bureau and I encourage you all to do the same. www.bbb.org.

Feel free to take what you want from my complaint, just be sure to insert your own order numbers, comments, etc.

Complaint Description:
I placed two orders for DVD's that were advertised at the following prices: The Lord of the Rings: Special Extended Edition Trilogy (12 Discs) (Widescreen) @21.96 Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition) @$25.96 Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie ******* and *******.

The order was placed by Credit Card and confirmed via Email. 12 hours later I received notification that every purchase was an error in price and was increasing as much as 95%. This is clearly "bait advertising". Amazon.ca listed fifteen popular DVD's at amazing prices, 75-96% off. Then a general email advertisement was sent that the "Bestsellers" (which were now all of these deeply discounted DVD's because people were buying them at the sale price) were up to 30% off. Less than an hour later the prices were increased and notification emails were sent that all of these 15 titles had been "incorrectly priced" and unavailable at that price. Amazon was using bait advertising to draw people to the site and have the "Bestsellers" list stacked with the popular DVD's. If a company advertises a product at a discounted rate, and a customer agrees to purchase that item by entering credit card information and submitting an order form, the company should not have the right to increase the price *after* the point of sale.

I phoned Amazon.ca 1-877-586-3230 at 7:20pm CST on December 10th 2005 and spoke with Customer Service Representatives **** and ****. After a hold time of 60 minutes I was told it was a price error, they didn't know why it happened and nothing could be done. I have proof of all emails and advertised prices. If you need further documentation please contact me.

Your Desired Resolution:
I expect Amazon.ca to complete my order by providing the products I agreed to purchase at the price provided at my point of sale.

This case will be reviewed by a complaint specialist at the Better Business Bureau, and then forwarded to the business for their response. It is our policy to allow the business 30 working days to respond to your complaint. You will be notified when the business has responded.

You are right that there's no contract and that's the thing that bothers me, they can decide when the payment is made. I believe it should be when you press the "Process Order" button, but instead they wait until the order is shipped. You are lead to believe there is a transaction going on, but until the order is shipped, technically your order is only a "request for order". Don't you find that strange?

I can not think of something equivalent that "real life" stores have the right to do.

Well, look at it from the other way: companies like dvdsoon.com and boxofficevideo.com charge your credit card the moment you press that "confirm order" button, whether or not they've got the product in stock, whether or not they're going to have it in stock, and (in the case of the former) whether or not they're about to declare bankrupcy. Wouldn't you rather wait to be charged once they've actually shipped your package?

I don't think DVDSoon or BoxOfficeVideo is better than Amazon. If they can't honor a product's price (either because they don't have access to that product, or because the price is incorrect), then the product should simply not be available. It should not be a matter of when the payment is processed but rather when the transaction was completed by the client.

Customer service first. I wanted to add that code for $10 to new accts. I then ranted about their inability to honour their prices. I'll receive a response from them nonetheless.

Also, make sure you guyz tell BBB about the "price increase". If I chose the item and paid for it BEFORE the 'increase', I should get that price!

Err .. I shouldn't have removed family guy and matrix from my order, eh. darn. Oh well, I have their e-mail stating that the price 'increased'.

Its one thing to make a pricing error and admit it, its another to make like 15 changes to prices and call them price increases. You cannot honestly say this was an error, there were pre-made gifs on these dvd pictures which said 83% off or whatever ... keep us updated on the BBB claim

I ordered LOTR, Firefly and a new book from amazon marketplace.

I didnt think I had a great chance with LOTR, but I thought firefly was selling at that price a few weeks ago at FS, so that would keep my order legit along with the book.

I checked and got an emailing telling me that firefly was wrongly priced so I cancelled.
So now then I checked my account and it shows LOTR for $23ish, no shipping, $2 taxes and $70 total. How is that possible? And besides that I am stuck paying for a book I would not have ordered on its own.

We hope you'll understand that, with several
million
items listed on our Web site, it's unfortunate but inevitable that some
items occasionally will be priced incorrectly.

As stated in our pricing policy-which is posted online in our Help
department - if we discover an incorrect price, we'll notify you to
obtain your approval of the new price before we proceed with the order.

Seem pretty clear to me from their email.

Who's fault is it that they have grown beyond what they can properly manage?

Also, isn't it a little weird that they don't catch these errors when they happen, but only after we place our orders? They are obviously only actively screening the orders and not their own website.

Now, can anyone tell me, what the difference is between the SW trilogy on Amazon, released in 2004, or the new one, that stores are selling which was just released this week? Both are enhanced???

The difference is that the new release does not contain the fourth bonus disc. This new release is limited edition (I think it is supposed to be limited as in quantity but it is also limited by not having the bonus disc :)). The box has a nicer cover though, with the original movie poster on it.

well, after dropping the Family Guy set off my order it stated that the LOTR set was 21.96 + 5.xx shipping + tax = 131.xx. left the 'my orders' part and then went back into it and now the total is 30.95.

If I get it great, if not, oh well.

The only thing that is bugging me is the confirmation email I received of the original order that advertised the matrix set with the 29.99 (or whatever) price in the email. It's not like I went and found an error on the site with that one, it was emailed to me by them. I know the email is just pulling script from the site, but that one bugs me.

I won't be boycotting amazon or anything like that though, I had no real hopes of getting these items anyways.

Interesting, but it's on Amazon's side, not us, the customer. Basically it tells businesses how to avoid snafus that Amazon's caught in right now. It doesn't tell us how to put the squeeze on Amazon and get the stuff for the prices that we thought we'd be getting them for! But good find.

Couldn't agree more...

They made a mistake. It happens. If you can take advantage of it, all the power to you. If you can't, suck it up. Get over it.

Regarding the BBB, it's not like they have any legal authority. So, even if you had a legit complaint (which I don't think this is), they couldn't force Amazon to do anything.

Regarding the number of mispriced items, didn't another poster state that 'all' the items that were mispriced ended up in a different (30% off ?) sale? If so, wouldn't that explain why they were 'all' mispriced? One mistake carries through.

I work for a large company and we too make mistakes. The difference? We eat the cost of those mistakes, not our customers.

If we send an invoice for $0.00 to you (which we've done!) we will honour it. That's reputable. Amazon.ca isn't.

I don't expect anything short of a "we're sorry but" email from Amazon after filing a BBB complaint, but every complaint we send will stay on file and that's good enough for me.

The 30% sale is for the Bestsellers and these mispriced items weren't best sellers until AFTER the mistake.

Alright, my mistake. That does, however, point out the magnitude of the errors and how it would affect them to honour them. If it's enough to put all those items on their top seller list, there must have been thousands of orders/items at the mistaken prices.

Sent this email off this morning. Lets see what happens :)

Thank you for your email informing me of the price increase prior to billing and shipping my order. Before I complete my order, I draw your attention to the following remarks.

In your online pricing policy, you state the following:

We cannot confirm the price of an item until you order, but please note that we do not charge your credit card until your order enters the shipping process. Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items in our catalogue are mispriced. Rest assured, however, that we verify prices as part of our shipping procedures.

* If an item's correct price is lower than our stated price, we charge the lower amount and ship you the item.
* If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we--at our discretion--will either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation.

In your email, entitled “Your Amazon.ca order (####-#######-#######): your approval required “ you state that:

“We're sorry, but we've learned the prices of the following items have
increased:

George Lucas (Director), et al "Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)" [DVD]
OLD PRICE NEW PRICE
CDN$ 25.96 CDN$ 79.98

"Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" [DVD]

As stated in our pricing policy-which is posted online in our Help
department - if we discover an incorrect price, we'll notify you to
obtain your approval of the new price before we proceed with the order”

The statements contained within the email do not comply with your online pricing policy. In particular the statement that, “the prices of the following items have increased” is not suggestive of “a small number of the items in our catalogue are mispriced.”

I do not believe you should be able to increase the price of a product after the product has been ordered. According to section 74.05 of the Competition Act.

Sale above advertised price

74.05 (1) A person engages in reviewable conduct who advertises a product for sale or rent in a market and, during the period and in the market to which the advertisement relates, supplies the product at a price that is higher than the price advertised.

During the period of approximately 8:00am to 10:00am on Saturday December 10, 2005, the person, hereinafter referred to as Amazon.ca, advertised on www.amazon.ca, the sale of a first DVD and a second DVD. The first DVD referred to as “Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)” and the second DVD referred to as “Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story”. The first DVD was advertised for $25.96 and the second DVD was advertised for $12.66. Advertisements for the first DVD and the second DVD included edited images illustrating percentage off sale prices with respect to normal prices. A consumer, hereinafter referred to as Mr. Smith, initiated an order from Amazon.ca comprising the first DVD and the second DVD.

Subsequently, Amazon.ca sent an email to Mr. Smith to inform Mr. Smith of a price increase requiring confirmation by Mr. Smith prior to supplying the first DVD and the second DVD, wherein the price increase defines a new supply price of the first DVD as $79.98 and a new supply price of the second DVD as $99.97.

As outlined in Section 74.05 (1) of the Competition Act, the conduct of Amazon.ca corresponds to a sale above advertised price.

According to Section 74.05(2), Section 74.05(1) does not apply if:

(a) in respect of an advertisement that appears in a catalogue in which it is prominently stated that the prices contained in it are subject to error if the person establishes that the price advertised is in error;

(b) in respect of an advertisement that is immediately followed by another advertisement correcting the price mentioned in the first advertisement;

(c) in respect of the supply of a security obtained on the open market during a period when the prospectus relating to that security is still current; or

(d) in respect of the supply of a product by or on behalf of a person who is not engaged in the business of dealing in that product.

According to 74.05(2)(a), Amazon would have to indicate that the price of the first DVD and the price of the second DVD would have to be an error to note the inapplicability of Section 74.05(1). However, in the email sent by Amazon.ca, they acknowledge that in fact that “we've (Amazon.ca) learned the prices of the following items have increased”. It is clear from statements made by Amazon that the prices were not erroneous. Thus Amazon.ca cannot rely on Section 74.05(2)(a).

According to 74.05(2)(b), Amazon would have to publish a second advertisement subsequent of the first advertisement correcting the prices of the first DVD and the second DVD. Amazon.ca has asserted no such correction. Thus Amazon.ca cannot rely on Section 74.05(2)(b).

Section 74.05(2)(c) and 74.05(2)(d) do not apply to Amazon.ca according to current knowledge of Mr. Smith.

As stated, the conduct of Amazon.ca is unlawful in view of the Competition Act.

In view of the preceding, Mr. Smith requests that order be completed as initially set out on Saturday December 10, 2005 at approximately 10:00am, prior to the email from Amazon.ca describing the price increase.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Smith at ###-###-#### or at ######@######.com.

Kind regards,
Jon Smith

Shouldn't we still get the item at the sales price because our orders were placed during the sale?

The email I received this morning only mentioned
We're sorry, but we've learned the price of the following item has
increased:

"Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy
Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" [DVD]
OLD PRICE NEW PRICE
CDN$ 12.66 CDN$ 99.97

I'll wait to see if they email me about the other two items I ordered, before firing back a reply.

i just cancelled the items they needed me to approve.. 3 of them...
still have 2 in my orders though.. if they change the price of those 2... i am going to email them and complains...
what's the chance of having all 5 items in my order having a price error at the same time?
wtf...
that's just unreasonable..
let's see if we can get some gift cert out of this one...
i do hope they honor at least 1 of my items and give me free shipping..

good job dude!!! :D

As stated in our pricing policy-which is posted online in our Help
department - if we discover an incorrect price, we'll notify you to
obtain your approval of the new price before we proceed with the order”

(a) in respect of an advertisement that appears in a catalogue in which it is prominently stated that the prices contained in it are subject to error if the person establishes that the price advertised is in error;

(b) in respect of an advertisement that is immediately followed by another advertisement correcting the price mentioned in the first advertisement;

Kind regards,
Jon Smith

can these amazon threads be locked already? this is rediculous it happens EVERY single time amazon makes a price error.

1. people spaz and buy 20 copies
2. rampant specualtion if we will get the cheap product or not
3. amazon cancels or revises the pricing
4. much cursing, threats of lawsuits, boycotting amazon
5. see #1

And how hard is it to not open a thread if you don't want to read what is inside? It has to be locked because you don't want to read what is being posted?

If this is a common occurance with Amazon then that is even more reason to fight it for once. I don't expect to get the DVD's at the sale prices, but I do hope to put an end to the price "errors" they apparantly so commonly have.

As for whiny babies, who is doing the whining this time?

i'm not being optimistic, i'm being realistic, if you and the multitudes of whiny babies would actually take 5 minutes and read the buying policies on amazon.ca you would understand we are NOT getting these dvds. period. end of story.

I'm guessing a lot of people keep missing my posts, but at least dummjock has taken the right step.

I think ur rite l_architect. I mean amazon continues to make these mistakes and makes us buy like 20 copies, making the product they list as a best seller. It causes rampant speculation of the price and the product. This is probably a way for them to jackup their sales for the xmas season as well.
Even if we make the complaints now, its already too late for most of us cuz by now we've probably cancelled the orders.
So I think the complaints that are made directly to amazon r pretty much useless cuz they can turn a blind eye, or say that sumwhere on their site that it stipulates that they have a rite to make a price change or change the deal on you at anytime.
Should probably make a complaint with the canadian business bureau instead.

SO CLOSE THIS THREAD ALREADY, ITS SUPPOSE TO BE A HOT DEAL THAT IS NOW DEAD...GET OVER IT!!!

mods knowingly closed the 'PSP + 5 games amazon error' thread last time while we were working on the matter!. only by a fluke occurance a few of us got together through PM's and continued work on it.

End result? We got the PSP + 5 FREE games.

Amazon buckles, but each of us only managed to win by phone. Getting the right CSR and saying the right keywords. CSR's are much like robots, you have to feed them the right numbers to unlock them and what dummjock wrote is a step in the right direction.

I came online today, saw that my order needed confirmation to change the price to a new price of 99.97 dollars. I decided to see how much each item would have cost seperately.
Family guy 1+2 pack = 55.98
Stewie Movie = 26.96
Total: 82.94

I decided to cancel my order and send amazon a nasty email about how they changed my price. They said to me their suppliers changed their price. I put in my email saying that I don't think it is right to advertize an item at a certain price, then change the price after confirmation. If they can not get items at a certain price, then, they should not be selling it and state it is out of stock on their website. I also stated this is my first time purchasing from them and mentioned that it has put a foul taste in my mouth purchasing from a company that does this.

Hmm... I read the email again, and I think you may be right. They at first say that the price is increased, but later essentially say that it's a pricing error. Kinda deflates my enthusiasm about the entire ussue ;) I'll send them an email about LotR to see what's going on with it.

EDIT:

I emailed them and ask them to replace the family guy set in my order with a book to bring the shipping back over $39, but didn't mention that LotR was still in the order at $20 or so. We'll see what they say.

I don't want to be rude to you people, but look at what victoriaboy just said. They are still sticking to a price increase.

The e-mail goes on to mention generic business practice. It says "some" items, but doesn't refer to the exact items in question. It clearly says "price increase" only.

Infact, that is something they can or will say in all orders. Majority of my orders online with all companies throw in disclaimers in my order. Does that mean my order was a price error and went up? Uh, no. I've had many orders across many websites that stated erroneous and generic statements like that and thrown in my order for good measure, and it meant absolutely nothing.

I hope I don't have to repeat myself again.

victoriaboy, you can get all over that. Not only have they said price increase, but now they say their supplier increased the price. That's plain illegal. A clear firm admission that they are advertising and selling at one price, then asking you to pay higher before shipment because while they sorted through the order the price went up.

Amazon is basically agreeing that we ordered the item when it was really that low price.

Repeat yourself all you want. It looks to me like they're saying that there was a price increase. The reason there has been a price increase is due to a pricing error. There's no reason the price increase and error have to be mutually exclusive.

The e-mail has mentioned generic business practice that's applicable to the situation.

tigerdirect says this in their email :
TigerDirect.ca takes credit card fraud very seriously. For security purposes, this order may require voice confirmation with our Credit Department prior to shipping.

By your logic, someone MUST have stolen my card and committed fraud.

But, in reality, this is the real case :"
Please retain this order confirmation for your records.

All what that means is they're sending me a confirmation of my order, not that my credit card was fraud-ed.

Think about this logically for a second: do you really think that a company as large as Amazon could honestly charge 93% off the retail of a boxset that's selling for over $100? It's simply not feasible, economically or otherwise, to assume that Amazon did this on purpose. It has to be a price error; there's no other reasonable explanation for it.

Then they should fire quite a few people because they advertised over a dozen "hard to believe" sales like this Friday Evening.

My LOTR, Band of Brothers, and Family guy orders all got the same e-mail from Amazon. Looks like the webmaster attended the amazon x-mas party before updating the site Friday.

They should honour the mistake they made.

They are putting themselves in the same boat as DVD Box office IMO.

I'll remember this seeing that I have about 4000$ worth of DVD's to replace when my house got burglarized last month. Guess amazon will not be seeing a single penny of this.

If they said price error, it would be different. I would not be surprised if they did this to many people and did the same thing in other items. And a % would prob say, small price increase, i will buy it at that price. You can look at it as they are milking more money from people. I know it's a price error :D But, that's not the point. I just feel like I failed my driving exam honestly, and then they said I failed because I cheated and then they told me to F off. Eventhough I only failed because I was a poor driver, not a cheater.

There's many reasons why we could argue it is possible. Such as,

1. Amazon overcharged those items items anyway, and they weren't competitive in the first place. That artificially boosts the percentage rating of the discount. That's why it's possible to get crazy 90%+. But, for the most part my orders were only 60% and up.

2. 60-70% off isn't unreasonable, if you deduct their price inflation which skews the percentage then factor in that every store in the world is doing friends & family at large discounts. They dropped the price to sway us in.

3. Given 1&2 we can then argue that overnight, according to victoriaboy's story that they admitted to a supplier price increase, the supplier raised the price. Therefore, we did infact order at the original real price, and the new price is clearly a breach of original order price.

Regarding victoriaboy, it's possible that he just got a CS rep that is spewing out a common CS answer that doesn't apply to this particular situation. As we all know, there is no guarantee that any given CS person is going to know what they're doing, as opposed to running through a script and spewing out answers.

Then they should fire quite a few people because they advertised over a dozen "hard to believe" sales like this Friday Evening.

There's no question that somebody should be held accountable for this mistake, but in the end that's what it was - a mistake.

If they say that their supplier increased the price, then I don't like being advertized to at a lower price. it is not my fault they are sticking to their guns of saying their supplier increased their price. If they said price error, it would be different. I would not be surprised if they did this to many people and did the same thing in other items. And I agree with you! If you're upset about the situation, you shouldn't just cancel the order and fume; rather, you should call, write, or email to let them know that you're upset about the issue. But a company as big as Amazon has to have an automated system. If their supplier screwed up and fed them bogus numbers, how would Amazon catch it before it showed up on the site? I doubt that even a company as large as them verifies every single price before it goes live. I've experienced slight price changes (both ways, up and down) shortly after I've placed an order; when it's gone down, I email them and ask them to correct it to the lower price. They do so and tell me that fluctuations with their suppliers cause the prices to jump around a bit.

This is a snafu, no doubt about it, but think about this: if you accidentally ordered something and then wanted to cancel your order, would they graciously allow you to do so, or say vindictively, "No! You placed the order, so now you have to honour it!" I'd hope that we would show them as much graciousness and understanding in this situation as we'd expect from them if the situation were reversed. (And no, just because they're a big company and we're individuals, it doesn't mean that the golden rule doesn't work for them.)

If this was a price increase from the supplier, then tough for them! That is the dirty game of playing sell before you got the stock, I guess. One would think that they would set their prices based on what their suppliers were quoting, and if the supplier pulled the rug from under them, then they should hold them accountable. I emailed them, but haven't got the "Our suppliers jacked their prices" email back yet. Nothing may come of it, but maybe they need to just honour what they can, limiting items, or something and accept their loss and thrash someone else for their mistake. And secondly, really, would they have received a price increase from their supplier overnight on a weekend???

That's hard to say, I don't know exactly but it's very possible that blurb is sent in all special case e-mails such as honest price increases, and most importantly price drops.

That gives me a good idea, good work.

Can someone here paste a blurb of a price drop? I'm sure one of you must've gone through it. An e-mail stating you ordered something at ___ amount and it has since dropped and they will honour the drop. It says on their site that this happens.

Now I don't know whether Amazon will accept the loss or not, but the issue at hand is why did the prices increase.

As of current, Amazon has not explicitly sated what the problem was, and in fact, all they have said currently is that the items increased in price. The following statements:

We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this change in
price might cause. We hope you'll understand that, with several million
items listed on our Web site, it's unfortunate but inevitable that some
items occasionally will be priced incorrectly.

That being said, now that I have suggested the error to amazon, they are caught in a bind, because now that I have suggested the possibility, they can't simply say that it was a pricing error. This would be considered hindsight in view of my email. Instead, they must provide proof that the price increase was an error. My hope is that the amount of time they put into establishing this proof to me will equate to a higher expendature than them swallowing the loss.

Price drop:

Thank you for writing to Amazon.ca.

The discounts we offer on items on our web site do vary from time to time. I've checked your order, and found that we now offer a greater discount on "Last Samurai (Widescreen) (2 Discs)" than at the time you placed your order.

Since this item has not yet shipped, I have adjusted the price to reflect the current discounted price of $25.99. This is the price you will be charged when the order ships.

On the date of shipment, you should receive an e-mail message confirming the date, contents, and method of your shipment.

Thanks again for shopping at Amazon.ca.

As stated in our pricing policy-which is posted online in our Help
department - if we discover an incorrect price, we'll notify you to
obtain your approval of the new price before we proceed with the order.

apply to general products featured on the website, not my particular order.

So, you're saying that this response was not regarding your order? I didn't get this e-mail... It seems that everyone that's posted this e-mail or confirmed that they got it, has placed an order trying to get in on the price error... Did the e-mail not mention your order number in the title, or anywhere else in the e-mail? Did it not have a link specifically for you to use regarding your order?

Don't get me wrong, I'd like everyone to get their orders, that's what this forum is all about. However, my opinion is that amazon is under no obligation to do so, as they have followed their own stated policies. Trying to pick apart their words in order to get something for almost nothing, just seems futile.

I received a email from the customer support at Amazon after I complained about the Family Guy deal. It says:

"I've checked your order, and found that we
now offer a greater discount on "Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1,
Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold
Story" than at the time you placed your order"

This not correct though. I placed my order at $12.66. All they did was lower the price from $99.97 to $82.01.

As far as "the error" vs "price increase", yes the email quoted my order number, and yes the comments about the price error applies to my order. However, they did not explicitly state that my order was a pricing error, but rather a price increase.

That's my point as well, mine had my order number, and they haven't touched my LOTR's though... But it is a bulk mailing, that says "price increase" as the reason for the change.

Just want to throw 2 pennys out

Somone a page or so ago stated that what company would offer 95% off a item well i have delt with amazon.ca & amazon .com tons of times and a few times i have gotten items that were normally 150$ for 15$ hell just 2 months ago i ordered 5 sets of KING size sheets that were pretty much Buy one get one free so ( 10 king size sheet SETS ) for a grand total of $75, so these deals are quite common

Anyways as for the chance on getting this i dont think so but if you complain enough you should get a promotional code from them i would think at the least, i know last month i ordered a Pre ordered DVD and when the items didnt ship till 4 days after release i cancelled and complained and was issued a 10$ code since i told them i would be going to the store tonight to get it

I did notice last night tthat they had a dozen or so dvd's with drasticlly low prices and then today them all changed :( i almost ordered 2 or 3 things but didnt want to because of the holidays

The same bitching and crying EVERY time.

I ordered, and mine was cancelled. They would lose a LOT of money off of this if they shipped. Price errors happen. If it were you, and this were your business, you wouldn't ship them either.

This wouldn't build customer loyalty if you shipped it. That's what everyone always says. They wouldn't avoid negative press over this, in fact, I'd be surprised if any two-bit community newspaper would even look twice at a story like this, "AMAZON BACKS OUT OF ACCIDENTAL PRICE ERROR, CUSTOMERS FURIOUS OVER A MISTAKE THAT COST THEM NOTHING."

If you put something on the buy/sell and missed a decimal place, would you still sell it? I wouldn't. Sure, they're a big company, but it's not as if they hide the fact that price errors happen.

Once it's safely in the mail, I'm sure amazon would give us all the deal with an image of your receipt or even account name. I'm sure a receipt with no name/information on it, but the actual price and saying "shipped/recieved" would work as well.

But, make sure it's in the mail first of course, so they can't change the price on you. Remember, the contract is 100% binding once it's shipped, according to their own rules.

When I fought amazon last time, and was getting near my win they requested a name of someone who got the free games and with it they would duplicate the deal.

It's much like going to court. A judge will deal a verdict based on a past case, no matter how fair/unfair.

Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.ca.

I've made the change you requested. I have added the item "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" to your order. Also, I have removed the item "Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" from your order.

I am sorry that we do not currently offer the option to add items to an existing order via "Your Account." We hope to offer this to our customers in the near future.

Whenever we make a change to an open order, such as modifying the shipping options, address, or items, our system re-evaluates our inventory to determine the best fulfillment plan for your order given the new information. Occasionally, this may result in a change to the expected shipment and delivery dates for the order.

However, as an one time exception, to expedite your order, I have changed the shipping method to "Express Shipping" and we will ship the items in stock, at no additional cost.

The revised estimated delivery date is December 23, 2005 for all the available items.

NOTE: You may notice extra shipping and tax charge on the unshipped items on this order which may appear due to a technical error on our end. As soon as you receive the shipping confirmation mail for these on hand items, please contact us so that we may remove these charges from your order. Please use the following link to contact us regarding this:

http://www.amazon.ca/contact-us/

Please be assured that we will do everything we can to ensure that your order is shipped and delivered as efficiently as possible. We will send you an e-mail at the time of shipment. Please contact us again if you do not receive a shipment confirmation by December 19, 2005.

You can check the status of your order any time by clicking the "Your Account" link at the top of our web site.

Thanks for shopping at Amazon.ca.

So, in sum: they removed the family guy box set, at my request, changed the shipping speed to express, AND are shipping out the stuff in separate shipments to speed it up. LotR is still at $20; the CSR said absolutely nothing about increasing the price (as you can see). I've included a screenshot of my updated order after a CSR has gone through it and made changes, so it might (?) be safe to say that I'll be getting the box set for $20!

They've been promising the ability to add items to submitted orders for several years now; I'm not holding my breath. Until then, I can safely say that A.ca still has wonderful customer support, and (crosses fingers) hopefully I'll be getting the box set for the above price.

Don't be! I emailed a CSR and added a book to my item, and they didn't comment at all about LotR at the reduced price. My theory is that it's a year old anyway, so it's not likely to move very quickly this Christmas, which is why they're letting it be sold at such a reduced price.

That was no price error.

It was on sale for about $10 more in November so you can be pretty well assured that order will go thru.

He dun want to alert them that they have not yet given him a price adjustment on the BOB yet.

I would not want to take any chances on that order either.

Hi. I have a question..

I noticed that Amazon has a "combine items" function in their checkout but do they have an "uncombine items" function as well? The reason is I ordered the LOTR bundle along with a bunch of books to get the free shipping but since Amazon.ca started adjusting their prices I was was wondering if I can uncombine the LOTR bundle and switch it to express shipping.

I sent various e-mails - getting mostly canned replys - however I sent one saying that I might consider cancelling my Family Guy is I got free shipping on LOTR alone. Got this back:

Greetings from Amazon.ca.

Your items have not yet shipped because we are waiting to
obtain "Family Guy Gift Set - Volume 1, Volume 2, and The Family Guy
Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story."

This item takes longer to obtain from our suppliers. We currently
expect to deliver it to you by January 27, 2006.

Other items in your order may be in stock but have not yet shipped
because the shipping instruction to "ship when entire order is ready"
was selected while ordering (this is the default option on our order
form). When this option is selected, we typically wait until we
receive all of the items from our suppliers before we ship your
order.

However, I have made a one-time exception with your order, and have
changed your shipping option to "ship items as they become
available" at no additional charge. Whenever items are shipped, we
will send you an e-mail message to confirm the date, contents, and
method of your shipment.
I apologize if there has been any misunderstanding.

So I think they will send out LOTR as soon as available without my cancelling Family Guy (this still allows me to fight on that one).

P.S. the Customer Service Rep was Kelly H.

They wanted to charge me over 200 dollars for the seinfeld...i had to call and complain so they sold me the seinfeld for $136.50, and the star wars for $3.50

They said that would even out the problem by keeping seinfeld at $115 and star wars trilogy at $25

This is insane: BOB was removed from one of my orders, and they didn't even inform me. Last night, both orders said "awaiting approval" or whatever, and now BOB is not in my first order.

Thosae are pretty shady tactics in my opinion, and moreover, I think it shows how little Amazon.ca cares about their customers -- they didn't even give me the opportunity to decide if I wanted to pay the revised price for BOB; they judt went ahead and deleted it.

I highly doubt I'll ever order anything from Amazon again.

you're right

this was very unprofessional and a lot of ppl honestly added one of the videos to their order with a book or something they were going to order anyway, to get free shipping

now imagine how many of them are going to get a surprise when it ships not only without the videos, but a shipping charge, and they never even got 1 email throughout!

This is going to hurt amazon real bad. if the webmasters haven't been fired yet, they will be now

Just checked my order, everything has been removed. Guess I knew it all along anyways. They probably didn't want to send out another "price increase" email since it's almost certain everybody who ordered the previous dvds cancelled them. So I guess Amazon assumed that nobody was going to stick with their order so it was pointless to let their customers know about the change.

I find it incredible that they cancelled the LotR box set from my order without contacting me and then went on to charge me shipping for the other items in my order. I had already asked them to put in a book instead of the Family Guy set to get free shipping (they emailed me about that one), but to not email me about this & make me pay for shipping when this was plainly their fault is extremely irritating. I sent them a polite email explaining the situation to the CSR, saying that they've always fixed things for me in the past, and that I expect that they'll be able to do so now. Which *is* important because some people ordered *other* items.

Now if the "filler" items is < $39 these people will not only just get their "filler items" but be charged a delivery fee as well.

That is why notification is important (cause the "filler items" can be shipped BEFORE the person has an opportunity to cancel the order).

I'm in that situation, and I wouldn't worry about the shipping charge at all. If you just don't need the filler items, you can cancel the order and claim that it was Amazon's mistake. But if you do want the items, I'm sure that Amazon will comp the shipping charge, as it was (again) their fault.

I dont mind spending an extra 20$ for LOTR or BOB. Just treat clients with respect, as individuals, NOT as a collective.

bottom line, if this was BB or FS, we'd have the DVDs - and they couldn't blame "volume" for the pricing error. The only reason for this was that my message asking to add the second item was still in the queue after the cancellation messages came out..

Perhaps if you are in a similar situation with additional item(s) in your cart and a coupon as well.. you can send a nice email asking if they would honor that portion.

Overall the prices will be too good to be true. I have shopped at amazon in the past and will shop there again..

Alright, so my order was nuked too, I can't even go to a history to see that I had placed an order and then it was cancelled... So I assume that nothing has been or will be charged to my card, but I feel great that I gave them that information!

http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00003CXCT/ref=ed_cp_1_2_/701-7570769-2897165
Why not still let people have the option of buying it at sale price, of $79.99, instead just cancelling... I don't get it...

I just emailed back to find out what happened to my 15 days to decide if I wanted to cancel the order myself, or buy it at the new price, but they nuked it after 2 days??? They have wierd calendars at AMazon!

They did for the first set of rejection notices, but then people complained that amazon said it was a price increase and not a price error.. this way they cancelled, and if u want it you can just re-place the order..

bottom line, if this was BB or FS, we'd have the DVDs - and they couldn't blame "volume" for the pricing error. Amazon can't keep hiding behind its sales technology to cover their ass when they don't like the result. And, I still maintain that they would have made money off the discs we were buying.
FS does NOT honor pricing errors (you forgetting the $0 Xbox game already?).

Some does not equal all (and I suspect very few did).

BB did not honor the $10 off anything coupon either (well actually a *few* did but they just cancelled the clear majority of the orders without any notice).

The problem in both the BB and FS case was that people there were also abusing the deal (getting not just two or three items but many multiples of items).

FS has errors all the time and cancels orders without any kind of notice.

(the odd time they will post something on their website about it).

Actually Staples is the *only* major vendor I know of that does NOT cancel the majority of obvious price error orders (ie $9 DVD burner deal).

(granted their online inventory system stinks  ).

Oh well it was a fun ride eh?

If this was a securities exchange like the Tokyo Stock Exchange, all transactions are final. Recently, one firm tried to sell one share of a stock at 6000 yen, but ended up selling 6000 shares at 1 yen and that started a chain reaction that lost the company over $200 million. Those transactions were not reversed.

The funny thing was the company was also trying to sell 3x more shares than there was outstanding.

I called Customer Service furious that they deleted an item and added fees to my order without my approval.

The manager agreed to add LOTR back to my order and ship it.

I'm not holding my breath until I see it has been shipped but I think the whole,
"adding fees to my order" without my approval got them.

So, call and complain if they did this to you.

I'd encourage anybody else who's concerned about them adding fees without your consent to contact your provincial customer protection branch as well:

I always get a kick out of these threads.

Some Retailer makes an obvious pricing error and the RFD effect kicks in.

Not only do we all pile in, but the greedy buggers among us buy 10 copies.

We all know that the pricing is wrong, but we hold out hope that we will get a deal.

When the retaile realizes their error they reverse the pricing, cancel the orders (as it clearly states they are entitled to do) , then everyone goes Batshit.

Dont call the BBB, dont write letters , dont threaten to never shop their again, just suck it up. We tried to no avail.

Move on people

Whats fair is fair. It would have been nice to get a $100 DVD set for $20, but you are not entitled to it just because some lowly IT screwed up.

Is this the first time in your life that someone has tried to overcharge you?

Arent retailers entitled to make mistakes like anyone else or because they are huge entities, they should be perfect 100% of the time.

Both of the boxsets that I ordered were Christmas presents. It's a bit stressful to find out yesterday that they're not going to honour their prices, but it's even more nerve-wracking to realise that they're charging more in shipping fees than I agreed to. I'm not too concerned nor upset, but I'd like to get this situation resolved sooner rather than later.

As for the threadcrapping bit: in my opinion, if all you're doing is mocking people for being upset about this, then you shouldn't be posting here, but your latest post shows that you're a bit more mature than that, so i'll take my comment back, if you don't mind ;)

The thing that really gets me is that they waited 3 FULL DAYS (over 72 hours) to cancel my order. It was just sitting there, waiting, and then *poof*. Within that time, I could've got other Christmas presents for the people who will now be dissapointed by their non-boxsets. :(

Now I'll have to do some even-later Christmas shopping due to Amazon's pricing errors and their cancel-3-days-later idiocy.

EDIT: Nope, definitely no screwing over here! Just received an email from Amazon.ca stating that, in recompense for this situation, they'd give me free shipping on my outstanding order *and* gave me a $10 gift certificate for my trouble. We all knew that the pricing errors probably wouldn't be upheld, but for them to go to the trouble to make up for their mistake like this is absolutely fantastic, as far as I'm concerned. I'm still a bit disappointed, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

a few ppl got their orders, that's what we have to go on

also, I'm currently trying a new arguing method with them.

If the people who actually got in on it, get confirmed shipping and get it in their hands, we have a lot of weight on the matter and will get our orders.

so, this thread shouldn't die until the people who got in on it all decide they don't want to share the information needed, or else we're going to have the same thing happen as last time with the PSP deal, where out of probably hundreds of us, only 3 or so got in because the mods rushed in and locked it right when scans and names were going to be given out

To be honest, I'm thinking now that of the people who successfully got some of the deals, they had chosen to do express shipping instead of the normal super saver shipping which was extremely smart on their part. Kudos to them.

This may not be the case, however, I'm just speculating. When they messed up my order, took LOTR off and changed my shipping to express, the whole shipment was set to being prepared. I got them to credit back shipping and I'm alright with not getting LOTR. They still have awesome prices especially with the $10 off coupon. One of which is good to note is F.E.A.R. dropping to $21.

Greetings from Amazon.ca.
