Guess I will post and update this thread periodically as I roam thru Toronto searching for the right piece of furniture.
I will not post any mainstream furniture stores (such as Sears, Ikea, Brick, Leons, etc) I would never fill my home with pieces from these stores unless i'm looking for something simple like shelves, or lighting).
Again please stick with the theme of this thread, if you want to discuss Sears, the Bay, Ikea, the Brick, Leon's, etc please make another thread

Eq3 has a great brochure right now. Go to the King st. store to pick one up. The website is also very good. Has most of the dimensions of the furniture.

i've been to Decorium a couple of times. They do have some good pieces but most of the items are a little dated and very victorian.
However if you can find the right piece...then it's all good. However I don't recommend for condo homeowners.
The leather dept in the lower floor has a large of large items.

We were shopping last boxing day time for a conetmporary bedroom set, Decorium had the one we wanted the cheapest (by a fair bit). And Canadian made! From Shermag, in Quebec. I made Decorium actually confirm that it was made in Canada, not off-shore, as I'd heard a lot of quality issues with the foreign made stuff.
While we love the set, and it's very good quality hardwood, I do wish we'd looked around more for a second hand set. Sites like Craigslist have modern stuff all the time for sale that is selling for well less than half price from new, and after all, it's furniture, if its well taken care of, it doesn't wear out! We've since bought loads of stuff this way, and had huge savings by doing so. The only thing is that you can end up waiting awhile and spending lots of time watching online for what you want to come up. Small price to pay, to me.

Yes my couch, the "Titan" line is English Leather from the UK, but it is shipped to China and assembled there, then shipped to Canada.

Yup. I work at ELTE, it has some nice furniture and a huge selection of rugs and carpets, but it's expensive. Quality is good still, but def. a huge markup in price :D
For rugs and stuff, look at anywhere from 1000-50000.
Furniture is still pretty expensive.
Nice store though.

I'd give EQ3 a 1 for customer service. It was a lot of headaches dealing with them. I did get my sofa in the end, but that required about 10 phone calls and almost 5 months waiting (they estimated 6-10 weeks).
I'm not sure what the "MadeInChina" reference means, because their stuff is manufactured in Winnipeg (although it does seem like they're made in China judging from the time it takes them).

This is actually a very helpful thread and I'd like to do my part to keep it alive. So here are a couple of sites from me which I mentioned in some other threads as well:
www.rshop.ca : Good quality knock offs manufactured in China, not IKEA cheap, but certainly not King Street East Expensive. They have a King Street location and another one uptown at the corner of Leslie and 16th.
www.boconcept.ca : Used to be called Club8, doesn't have show room here in Toronto, but heard they have a warehouse in Montreal. If you are or know someone who is a DirectBuy member, you can get their stuff. This stuff could get expensive if you are not a DirectBuy member, and it might take a while to get here as it comes from Denmark.
Enjoy.

Queen St west between Bathurst & Dufferin
There's a BLVD @ Bathurst/Queen (northeast corner); then along queen on both sides -- names like Urban Barn, Urban Mode (on Tecusmeth), Pavillion, a place that resembles "Take me Home" @ Royal Bank Plaza, and others

What are people's thoughts on the quality of items from Up Country? Looking at some leather sofas from there... they seem very nice, but I was just wondering how durable they would be? I know they are not going to be as top quality as something from a place like Rawhide, but they are also much cheaper (half the cost in some instances). Will these be something that will hold up for 10+ years?
How about their bedroom sets? the designs look nice on the website, but how well are they made?
Thanks.

I would not expect these to be very durable. 3-5 years with moderate use, maybe, 10+ years, probably not. I picked up a Leather recliner from them and it seems poorly assembled but I knew that going in. Most of the time, you get what you pay for.
Most if not ALL of their stuff is made in China (ask them, they will tell you).

I don't have the exact address. But it's on the same side as the south/west corner of 16th and Leslike in Richmond Hill, in the plaza right beside the Shell station facing 16th. The entrance to the plaza is on a small stree off 16th just west of Leslie. Hope this helps.

My parents actually bought a few dinning chairs from Urban Barns after I took them there. My wife and I got the "Moo ottoman" there for a very good price. Personally, it's an interesting enough store that I will go there once a while. Nothing would wow you though, just little things here and there.

Haven't bought anythign from there personally but it's a shop that always seems to get looked over. Prices are somewhere inbetween Ikea and up country.
I would also add as a general neighborhood the king st to distillery district area. Tons of furniture shops there, some that have already been mentioned.
There's also the furniture ghetto out near yorkville mall inbetween the locations of ELTE and decorium. It's a big area but theres a ton of small stores stuck inside industrial buildings around there.

Ah yes...Oni One...that place is pretty neat although I doubt the price is Up Country though. I thought it's actually on the higher end and most of the stuff I saw was over Up Country price. But I could be just seeing thing. All we ever bought is a vase from Oni one 'cause everything else looked to be too expensive.

I priced out a 2.5 seater white leather couch there and it was "only" $1500 or so. Not shabby at all. It would fit 3 people no problemo but it was shallow. All their stuff is supposed to be designed for condos so if you're planning to buy stuff for a house it may look a wee bit small... maybe.
I really like their shelving unit system. It's a wall with holes for different components like shelves or bookcases. You mount the wall onto an existing wall and then hang everything off of that. I believe I also saw freestanding versions of that wall with a cabinet as the base.

I am really bad with English name of any Chinese stores. There is one furniture place that is "OK" on East side of Leslie, just over 1 traffic light North of Hwy 7. That store carries quite a bit of "made in china" furniture pieces that look decent. Of course, they also carries other brands such as Calligaris and so on.
The other one I can think of is that R-Shop, which I mentioned in some recent posts in this thread. Other then that, I don't really know.

I wouldn't recommend shopping here. The waits are ridiculous, the staff is incompetent, the customer service is non existent and after 4 months, I still don't have my furniture and they refuse to give a refund. Before buying anything from Upcountry, you may want to review the following boards:

It's really too bad since their furniture is nice and affordable. But if it never gets delivered, then I guess it's not such a good deal, is it?
It seems that the same story happens over and over again with them. We've gotten the runaround so much from them that I doubt there even is a new owner - especially since no one we've spoken to at the store or head office has mentioned it.

UpCountry has closed and gone out of business. I was there on Tuesday of last week and their suppliers were literally removing all of their furniture from the store and all the employees told us that as of tomorrow (Wednesday of last week) the doors would be locked and they'd be out of work. Well, sure enough their website is down, their phone is disconnected and a ton of people have been screwed. Unfortunately I was one of them, though I should get my $$$ back through my credit card.

Didn't see that one coming. The owner obviously knew that he was going to do that. What a crook! He should get jail time for that! As bad as Enron.:!:
Fawker - .....Terry Iwaskiw, owner of home furnishings empire UpCountry. See how Terry and his wife Sheila Cameron .....
They're probably living like fat cats somewhere with the cash that they "stole" from innocent people.

There's actually a pretty good article on the whole situation in the Toronto Star from October 13th. Basically the owner of UpCountry admitted to being too optimistic with business by opening two suburban stores while dumping a ton of $$$ into the new downtown store. I've filed a claim with my CC company and should hopefully get all of my money back. Also, their primary distributor is 'helping' those stranded by this situation by offered to sell them the pieces they're waiting on at their wholesale price.

For sort of modern but more traditional furniture....
If you are willing to travel to Buffalo, New York, I would suggest Value City Furniture.
You do have to bring it over yourself in a UHaul and pay Canadian duties - however the prices are shocking. Thousands and thousands of dollars less. Example, a sofa here that retailed for $5,000 - same brand same model name - Leather English Pub and oversized we paid $900 dollars for there. No joke. All wood bedroom set with Queen Sleigh Bed, huge dresser with mirror, armoire and end table - entire set in a cherry stain (remember all wood) $1,400.00. All wood dining room sets for like $700 and $800 dollars (4 chairs.) All the furniture in Extreme Home Makeover is a line they actually carry!!
Also in Hamilton Ashley Furniture, though I prefer Value City Furniture. Better prices and selection, but if you are not willing to move it yourself, then they are a good place for class on a budget.
I hate the Brick and Leon's, their stuff is cheap junk and overpriced if you ask me and you get WAY better furniture in Buffalo for a fraction of the price.

I looked at the prices and the couches at vcf and they look awesome...in all my searches i havent found couches that look this good and for that price.
Question of the day is....if i were to rent a uhaul and pick up a couch...am i paying taxes and duties on it????????????? and the cost of km's that uhaul charges would end up making this couch cost a lot more...which doesnt make sense...any suggestions?

gst and pst for sure. Duty only if made in countries outside of North America.
Usually, after paying ny state taxes, gst, pst and even duty, it's still cheaper to purchase items in the states. Really depends on the item.

Love this thread!! Thanks for all the great info.
Try www.bermex.ca to design your own furniture
and also www.allyourfurniture.com - Its an American website I believe, but lists GTA stores. You can do one big search and see if something you like is available in the GTA.
Keep 'em coming!

Or, just loosen up on your "specific taste and budget". Beats sleeping on the floor.
