Hey I have a question so I bought a car but the guy had to drive it here so we could complete the sale now he had to get the temporary liscence plate so that he could drive it here now heres where my question comes in.
Am I allowed to drive the car with the Trip permit to get the safety done, emission done etc.? or do I have to get insurance first then get my own trip permit.
I want to know becuase I would prefer to use this one becuase that way I dont have to pay another amount to get another trip permit and that way It will be better because for me to get insurance I first need a safety certificate and I would prefer not to tow the car.

i THINK the permit has information on ur insurance stuff... because when i got mine they asked for my insurance information. but after the woman at the counter asked for it, she asked her manager some qusetions which i didn't hear and the manager said they don't need my insurance info...
but u need insurance to drive anyway...
i don't think u can get another permit... because i was told u are only allowed one for every purchase or every few months or sumthin

The DMV took my insurance info down (or at least asked me about it) before they forked over the permit to me this past summer.
I think they ask for it in the 10 day permit application form do they not?

Insurance is required to get a 10 day trip permit (in Ontario, at least). After that, make sure you do all ur e-testing, certification, etc etc in those 10 days, cuz they wont let you renew again (yes, I've tried). When you get the temp permit, bring proof of insurance, and the ownership papers.

You need insurance on the car first.

You need to have your own insurance, and your own trip permit to legally drive it.
The minimum fine now for driving with no insurance is $5,000, the small fine your firiend got must have been for failing to produce proof of insurance when pulled over. He still would have had to have gone to the station afterwards to show he was in fact insured.

ok thanks so i cant use it without insurance I guess its either having it towed to get a safety or pushing it, what would be the reasoning with pushing it to the canadian tire its about 10 minutes walking time and you can go through a small street?

When I bought my used car, first, I called around for insurance quotes. When I settled on an insurer, they faxed me proof of insurance (it basically has my name, address, policy no, effective & expire dates, and VIN number of car). I took it to MTO with the ownership (filled out on the back) and UVIP (filled out). I got my 10-day and then went to get SSC and etest. 10 days is plenty of time to get all that done.

You dont need the SSC to get insurance. Basically, you cant get SSC and etest without driving your car there. You can't drive your car there without a plate (or 10 day permit). and you cant drive or get the 10 day permit w/o valid liability insurance on the car.

i think @ this point u just need to ask for liability insurance.. or some kind of temporary insurance.

well took the risk and failed the safety by two things parking brake light which was working before I went so I dont know if canadian tire did it but maybe it burnt out on the way there. Then the lower ball joint which Im going to have to get changed as long as bring it back within 10 days i can get the certificate without paying extra.

do u have a mechanic friend? ask to borrow a dealer plate... that's what i'm gonna do after my permit expires
hah i just did my safety + emissions today too... ugh now i gotta wait to get my damn federal inspection

what federal inspection? isnt it provincial inspection canadian tire charged me $80 + $10 for the certificate if I come back with it fixed within 10 days with the lower ball joint fixed then they will give me the certificate. If I could drive it I would never bring it there but its very close to my house about 3 minute drive so It was my only choice.

It's possible to drive it if he should give permission. It's the same if I lend out my car to someone else, my insurance still covers him if someone makes a claim. Of course this is a somwhat grey area, as you're in the middle of a title change, so you would need that in writing... otherwise, he could deny he gave you the permission.
Should you risk it... I would.

your 10 day permit starts from the date of sale and yes you need insurance.
it's like getting real plates you need the same info.
hope it helps
try Kanetix (http://www.kanetix.ca/auto-insurance) for cheap insurance

insurance is quite expensive kanetix has the most outrageous inflated prices, insurance hotline dot com is better but best way is to call companies yourself and im going with belair they are the cheapest for me.

a friend of mine who was driving with a temp plate got pulled over 5 times in 1 day.I think they go after these guys because a lot of people don't pay their parking tickets.. and can not renew, so they get temps when they need to to shopping.

so they get temps when they need to to shopping.
you can only get temp plates within a certain amount of time of you purchasing the car. Believe it's 14 days. Tried to get a temp permit on one i'd bought a few weeks before, and she told me no go.
So unless they went shopping and bought a new car they aren't doing this.
