The best technology always comes from the less the noble purposes. Most of computer technology and communications was driven through military needs....

Nuclear power plants probably wouldn't have been possible without the research used ffrom the nuclear bombs...

etc. etc.

Also, fuel cells technology was from submarines and space shuttle. Only they can afford to those kinds of R&D ...

Wow... "Currently, the reader costs a lofty $15,000 each, while one single disc costs $120—clearly unaffordable for the consumer market". They're projecting another 10 years for it to be a viable replacement to blue laser which by then prices will have fallen to make it practical for the end user.
