No Canadian Tire filters are rebadged Fram Extra Guard (orange) filters. Read the side of the filter and you'll see the Fram part number on most of them.
The Fram Orange filters are not good, you're right. The Tough Guard isn't too bad and the Extended Guard (Called the "synthetic oil filter" in Canada; Called the X2 in the US) is actually a pretty good filter.
But you get what you pay for... The average Fram orange filter will probably cost like $5; the Tough Guard probably $10 and the Synthetic/X2 perhaps $15.
Fram also has a new "high mileage" filter out but I haven't heard anything about that since it is new.
Mobil 1 and K&N Filters are good, the former is hard to find. Anyway I'd honestly either buy a Mobil, K&N, or Fram Extended Guard filter, otherwise just get the OEM filter because most of the cheap ones are exactly that--cheap.

the current OEM honda filters are also rebadged FRAM extra guards.
If you can, try to get your hands on some purolator pureone filters. They're much better than FRAM filters, but not as expensive as K/N and mobil1 filters. The part number is PL14610, which is the size equivalent of FRAM 7317. I use the same filters for my civic.

Stay away from FRAM yes. If you research you will find that it has bad build quality. If you have a Honda, go with the S2000 filter which fits like everything 1987 and up. These ones are the great ones made by Toyo Roki/Filtech. Surpasses FRAM is all aspects.
Other notables are K&N, Valvoline, Purolator

the wix filters have a decent reputation over at bobistheoilguy. They are rebranded and sold as the napa store brand.

I do know what I am talking about and if u did any kind of research on the subject, you would know that too.
The older honda filters with the part code 15400-PLM-A01 are not made by fram, but the new/current OEM honda oil filters (sold in north america) with the code 15400-PLM-A02 are from Honeywell (which owns FRAM). I got a bunch of free blue OEM honda filters from someone I know at a dealer. They all have either FRAM or Honeywell on them.
Here is a picture of the new OEM honda filter (A02) cut open:

Here is a picture of the FRAM extraguard cut open:

If you look closely, they are both the same crappy filter with a cheap plastic bypass valve and cheap cardboard endcaps. They are exactly the same thing on the inside, just with a different outer case.

I use the Ford premium filters... um on my Ford :) I remember they are made by Purolator as well. Someone told me once that Wix and purolator are the same filters too... not sure about that.

I've been told that if you're doing 5000km oil changes, the Frams and cheapie brands are 'good enough'
But if you plan on going for extended oil change intervals, they're a no no.

But you see, if you had a choice on getting two filters and for around the same price wouldnt you go with the better one, knowing it was indeed better?
Im kinda anal about what goes in my car because at the end of things, I know what I do now will contribute to how long it will last.

i don't see how the length of the replacement period for the filter has anything to do with how well the oil filter filters. even with 5000k, a poorly designed oil filter that doesn't filter out the particles well will still harm the engine

Very true... If they're the same price... If they're not then no.

The filters always filter upto OE filtering specs, else they would not be sold now would they? The problem really, with filters is not their filtering ability, but other things such as durability (cardboard endcaps or not, filter material's durability) and the bypass valve's reliability.

Ofcourse! Besides, orange FRAM filters aren't exactly dirt cheap either. For around the same price, definitely get a purolator or wix. Too bad they're not sold at everyday places like CT/walmart.
However, if you really don't care about quality and just need something for that winter beater, get a cheap filter like the honeywell "defense" (walmart) or the motomaster ones (canadian tire). They're only like $3-4 each. No need to pay more for orange FRAM case...unless you absolutely need that non-slip grip.

Yeah...K/N air filters provide better flow, but even when they're oiled up...they apparently let a heck of a lot of dirt into your engine.

The CT near me had Valvoline oil filters that were made by Purolator. Should check them out. They were closely priced to the FRAM's. Actually the latter FRAM I saw was like 14.99! The Valvoline was 9.99 I think and was a Purolator design.
Oh ya those FRAM grips are not needed since I think most of us do have some sort of filter screwdriver to twist and turn it.

Where are Purolator PureOne oil filters sold in the GTA?
I know that in the states they are available anywhere, but I haven't seen them in Canada.

It is more important that you change your oil regularly (5000km), than what brand of filter/oil you use.
I've seen ppl who think that with better quality oil and filters you dont have to change the your oil regularly more.

Filters are only so suppose to be on hand tight. Upon removing, they should just screw off with your hands. thats why those grips are there.

Well hand tight is good, but some manuals say otherwise. Like my Honda manual tells me to use the filter wrench to turn it like 2/4 turn after hand tight. Well something to that nature.

Hand tight is asking for trouble. It's only good if you have dry and strong hands.
Otherwise give it a little extra pressure by the wrench.

guys, you're both right and wrong.
Hand tight or not depends on the filter. Most cheap oil filters comes with a very cheap seal ring that requires the wrench to tigh it otherwise there will be leaks.
Performance/ high quality oil filters only require hand tight. I was reading about these long time ago. For example, take Toyo Roki Japan oil filters, you will only need hand tight. If you tight it by wrench you may have crushed the rubber ring thus leaks may occur.
To me, i find HAMP filter or Toyo Roki oil filters are very well made ( also make OEM Honda S2000 and NSX oil filters- but hard to find since most NA dealerships starts having Honeywell made one- NSX oil filters still made by Toyo Roki tho)
NOTE: DO NOT OVERTIGHT the oil filter otherwise you will damage the seal, most mechanic hand tights. Dont believe me? ask them. Because when the engine runs, the heat will do the sealing NOT your wrench!!!

haha...HAMP filters are even harder to find than purolators. Saw a few on ebay...about $20-25CDN/each after shipping/taxes.
I usually only hand tighten...unless my hands are covered with oil and I have no grip what so ever. Then I turn to the wrench for a bit of extra torque.

Cool thanks for the info. Glad we hand-tighted this time!

You can always stock up. However, if u really cared about the $4 difference, can always just buy a new one @$5.99 and return it afterwards with your $9.99 reciept.

I am going to buy some of these, I'm going to stack up on them as I heard good things about it. Maybe I'll get 5 or 6.
