My buddy wants to get a laptop for xmas. He's thinking of getting the R51 for $1199 plus the $149 special upgrade.

IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 725 - 1600 MHz
1GB SDRAM
40GB Hard Drive
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
Extra battery, adapter, case, security lock, mouse

Is this a good deal? 40GB seems pretty small these days and the lack of DVD burner turns me off. I can't help wondering if he would be better off with a Dell Inspiron 6000 instead?

i'm a sucker for ibm so i'd go with it, but a buddy of mine just purchased the dell inspiron 6000 ~ $1800, its a sweet lappy, but its a tad bit heavy compared to my T42.

My buddy will be using it for school and watching DVDs. He wants to be able to carry it around college and hang out at coffee shops with his girlfriend while doing homework. They plan on sharing the notebook. How romantic. :cheesygri

Interesting you said that. My cousin is having a problem with the dvd drive on the Dell laptop he bought last year. Meanwhile another cousin has an old IBM T series laptop from 5 years ago that has given him zero problems. My buddy might have to make a decision soon. The upgrade special may no longer be valid in Dec if new promos come up.

I agree except the gap between the two is not as great when comparing the "R" series Thinkpads and the Inspiron.

A better comparison would be the T series vs the Latitude series.

The build quality in the Latitude series is not that bad (it HAS to be decent else they would p*ss off their corporate client base-the only customers Dell cares about).

I would still favor the T series over the Latitude series.

Dell are popular for one reason - CHEAP

I liked their 700m, 6000 series

Wow. I didn't expect to see so many votes for IBM. I personally find the Thinkpads ugly and boring looking. So you guys think that the R51 is a good deal for $1199 + $149 for the upgrade combo? Or should my buddy wait for something better in Dec?

You friend (or anyone) isn't going around campus picking up girls with a notebook right? Thinkpads are designed with the mobile hard worker in mind. You won't be distracted by fancy whites or silver so you can focus on completing assignments and tasks.

It's possible come boxing day that there maybe some deals. Futureshop, Best Buy, Tiger Direct, and smaller computer stores also sell Thinkpad notebooks so you may want to shop around.

R50 is my work laptop for the past year+ and I love it! Great battery life, build quality and reasonably light.

In the real world, both quality and look are important. ThinkPad has same design for the last decade or more.

actually in the business world, quality is way way more important than look for business. which is why all business laptops be it from HP, IBM etc.. are black or grey. none of the gimmiky look at me styles that are good to look at until the paint chips etc...
