Topic says it all. I just called 3web and didn't get a good impression. I am looking to make the move from Rogers.

but rogers is prob the best newsgroup in the gta.
yes its slow now but retention is excellent.
if you want better - go symaptico, pricematch 3web, and get a pay service.

I was going to ask... How's the 3Web NNTP services?
e.g. any Binaries newsgroups? Retention period? Speed Caps? # of thread can be open at the same time?

agrrr sucks. And since 3Web own IGS.net, I guess is the same?
BTW, I plan to use their DSL service, not cable.

Cogeco has really redone there news server. I have had 100% completion on everything I downloaded, no use for PAR files but the retention is only a couple days, probably max 4-5. Its still good though if you get what you want quickly.

you are better off paying for a 3rd party one like giganews or something like that

Rogers will soon(maybe already) will be removing newsgroup service.
If you really use a lot f newsgroup (binaries), go get one of those pay services. They are really worth it.

Yes. Unfortunately rogers is going to drop their usenet services as of december 15. The only decent way of getting usenet service now is to pay for it.

do they have bin?
Also from www.canadianisp.com, they get a very bad rating.... and their mo charge after the first few mo is very expensive as well.

forget isps. just get a 3rd party nntp provider (i.e. giganews) if you're serious about downloading from binary groups.

I'm with IGS now. They were good til 3web took over, but are now useless for NNTP. I use Easynews and recommend them for their http interface. You can do everything using IE/Firefox etc.
I'm going to go back to Bell though. Not because of newsgroups, but because they are much cheaper for Ultra 5Meg service with no limits.

I have about 30 GB left over with Astraweb (I used them for fills back when Rogers had crap completion) which should help serve as a news buffer till I can settle on a good binary server once Rogers pulls the plug. Astra used to be alright, but I have no idea if they're any good anymore.
