Anyone know the best method of copying over a film from a camcorder to a PC? I have a tuner card but it only has the one jack for video so I can copy and record everything, but no audio..
Anyone have any other methods? can it be done via usb? what programs do I use?
thx

Firewire cable is a must (for high transfer rate speed).. If your desktop does not have firewire then you should get a firewire PCI card. Most laptops nowadays have a firewire (IEEE) port.
Once you have the hardware.. you need the software. There are freeware that capture video. I personally use Adobe Premiere Pro. When you "capture" video.. you are actually capturing the video and the sound (two different files).
Remember that video uses alot of space. Make sure you have a hardrive with lots of free space -- 10 minutes of video can take an average of 3 Gigs.
Hope this helps... ;)

You also need the cable. Make sure you buy the right cable .. there are pin 4-4 , pin 6-4.. (don't know if there is pin 6-6).. You will need the pin 4-6. Video cams firewire port are pin 4 .. and PCI cards are pin 6. To be 100% sure bring the camera and buy the cable and card at the same time.
Regarding the guys who need the video... unless they can produce the right hardware and software.. they'll have to wait. ;)

Unfortunately, his/her Hi-8 is not digital. He/she can't use Firewire.

Hey, yours is NOT exactly a Hi-8 ... It's a Digital-8 !!! Although it uses Hi-8 tapes, it records in digital format. Yes, you can use iLink/Firewire to transfer !
According to the spec, it has "Signal convert function (Hi8 to DV)" too ... It might come in handy if your tapes are in analog (Hi-8) ...
Take Cyber6's suggestion, go Firewire (digital lossless transfer). For hardware, you need a Firewire PCI card and a 1394 cable. For software, WinXP has Windows Movie Maker built-in. You may want to try that first. Oh, of course, I assume you have plenty of diskspace available.

thx a lot for the response. Im going to pick up the card and cabling today..
Out of curiosity though, can the video be streamed over via usb? or firewire only? b/c it has a usb adaptor on it..
What other software is avail to copy the vid to the computer other than windows movie maker?
Also, what else can I use firewire for?
thx

I believe the USB port is mainly for tranferring the images in the memory card to the PC.
I have also used Ulead's DVD MovieFactory.
I also use my FW for external HD ... Better than USB 2.0.

your a moron
You asked for help and said that some guys wanted to see the video tonight (Nov 25th). Most Camcorders can be hooked up to a TV to view the output, wasn't sure you were aware of that.
If the help you get isn't what you are looking for, ignore it, your comment is uncalled for but is probably indicative of your character in general.

I have this same camcorder, and I'm trying to transfer some video onto a DVD - unfortunately I don't have the laptop in front of me, but I don't think it has a Firewire port - am I screwed, or will I be able to transfer via USB?
Thanks.

I don't think it transfers via USB. I could be wrong. Do you have a video tuner or capture card?
I went the cheap route since I already had a TV tuner card and the camcorder I was trying to transfer from was an older model with not great recording (520lines), I just did the RCA cable input. Maybe this is an option for you?

Does your laptop has a 32-bit Cardbus slot (PC-Card) vacant ?? You could add a 1394 port ...

Willy - Is this the same thing as a 32-bit Cardbus slot (PC-Card)?
Since I don't have my laptop in front of me, I went to Dell's website and pulled this information (the laptop is an Inspiron 1300):
Slots:
- Express Card Connectors: One
ExpressCard slot 54mm
- Cards supported: ExpressCard/34 (34mm) and ExpressCard/54 (54mm)
If so, I imagine I'll be able to use something like this http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1215764&CatId=510 correct?

Let me take a quick look what "ExpressCard slot" really is ...
UPDATE> Hmm ... I am afraid you need something different ... ExpressCard is the new PCI Express variant of the PCMCIA. More info ... http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,1269435,00.asp & http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/standardsummary.jsp

Thanks for your help - I'll start trolling the internet for a Firewire adaptor that will work with my 'ExpressCard'.
It appears that this "new standard" that will "make everything easier" is a bit of a pain for me!

I've looked around at TigerDirect, BestBuy, The Source and Staples - none of them carry this product, or have even heard of one. I've seen reference to this product on the internet at http://www.abocom.com/product_detail.php?id=324 so I know it in fact exists.
Does anyone know where I can buy one?

I have a Sony HandyCam as well and I have transefered video to my computer using USB 2.0.
If this camera is USB 1 then chances are Willy is right, you would not be able to dub the tape to PC.
