yup, pignose puffer

He eats anything smaller than him and that includes my wife... well he tried :)
edit - I see you have listed some Bolivian Rams. They're quite nice but can be tank bullies, especially when spawning.

Bolivian rams so far seem to be all bark and no bite. Besides I can't sex them properly but i think i have all males. One looks like it might be female i'm not sure i'll have to see.
I see them fight amongst themselves but no real damage is done. They hide together with my cories in the same caves side by side.
I wanted to keep a puffer at once but after doing some research i decided not to because they seem like a lot of work and only like to eat live food. And brackish water seems hard to maintain and keep brackish. Hes big though! nice puffer. My guppy tank has lots of small ramshorn snails lol want some for your puffer to munch on? Maybe I can give you some and you can breed them in a small tub as food for your puffer

I don't have a recent pic of my puffer (I stole that one from google), but he's about the same size. The thing about the pignose (T. Suvatti) is he's a fresh water puffer (one of the few) so the water conditions are probably no more difficult than what you're keeping now. As for snails, he's not into them (tnq for offer though). I had a couple ramshorns before and they multiply like crazy! The puffer would not eat them so I had a snail problem for a while. I still see some in the tank at times.
His eye sight is not great and so he really only responds to live wiggly fish movement. I have been able to finally get him to eat thawed shrimp, but I have to make him fight with it to eat it.

I have a 25 gallon. It's got 5 harlequins (tough little buggers), a cory catfish, and some live plants. It's looking a big empty, but I've been too busy to get some more fish. I had a ram too. Pretty fish, but a little fragile. I had my betta in that tank for a while, but I removed him when I noticed that he was bullying the other fishes. I might pick up a pair of angelfishes this weekend.

get more cories! your cory is lonely they need to play together. One of my cories is silly he gulps too much air into his gut and keeps floating up and can't stay at the bottom of the tank lol

Most books say you can, just not with their own kind. I guess mine is just antisocial or something, because he's either in a corner by himself or he's chasing the other fishes.

I have two 15 Gallon aquariums with massive Comets, (2 per aquarium), left over from when I owned a crayfish. I have a couple smaller tanks---1 with guppies and snails--it's about 2 gallons, and the other for the moment, which is about 5 gallons , a baby Oscar-(1.5 inches long), until my 55 gallon is cycled.
I also have "Sea Monkeys"--but they're silly pets. :D

I must heartily agree with that statement. Cories are shoaling fish and the more you keep together the better off they will be. I've got a high-tech planted 50 gallon (massively neglected at the moment) with 5 C.aeneus and 15 pygmy cories (my current favourite fish). Also have about 150 cherry shrimp and a gazillion MTS.
If anybody ever wants cherries or MTS, let me know.

His name is El Diablo.
And he is sick :(
He swims vertically, it's really weird. I've even given him medicine (it's been a week) and he still seems ill. My poor fishy!!

90g tank and a nice colony of Tropheus (sp) Duboisi Kigoma of 20fish and growing. Better then tv at most times, especially when they try to spawn (which is almost all the time) LOL. All this is being filtrated by two Eheim canister filters and water being changed one/twice a week.

snails? You're probrably overfeeding. If you feed your fish less the snail population will decline by itself. If you're really adamant about getting the snails eaten try some loaches. Clown Loaches are popular but they eventualyl get so big they need a 75Gallon to house them. Maybe get a YoYo loach. they are also "usually" peaceful but they slurp up snails. Some snails are benificial anyway. My guppy tank is FULL of ramshorns. tehy dont eat the plants but they keep the glass squeeky clean,

I've read that loaches like the Clown Loach (Botia macracanthus) and Skunk Loach (Botia horae), and the Upside down Catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus) are capable of dining on snails. However, these fishes will get quite large (as much as 10"), but your size tank could probably handle it depending on what you already have in it. There are other solutions such as manually removing them and chemical additives meant to kill snails (I'm not crazy about these because they might alter the water chemistry). You should find some helpful links if you google it.

Get the clown loaches, they'll take care of your snail population quickly and after that you can sell them to the lfs or somebody else. Mind you that clown loaches can get up to 10" but you're more likely to see them reach about 5-6". They grow very slowly after that size and they live for a long time.

I had a small (baby) pike and had to let it go when it became too big for the 30 gallon. I don't live far from a small lake where it was from.

should never release any fishes that you keep in your aquarium to the local lake. Can spread diseases or invasive species which can wreak havoc on the local ecosystem or possibly wipe out the local fish population.

yes I did not know that when i was 13. I thought "it came from the lake so i will put it back."
Oni-kun
Dec 6th, 2005, 10:09 AM
well if it came from that lake it shouldn't really wreak havoc cuz that species belongs there but as for diseases it might be the one getting them because being in captivity for so long it might not be used to all the nasties that are out there. and it might get killed by other predatory fish cuz is not used to living in the wild.
you should never release non native fish, especially coldwater fish. if its tropical it'd probrably die during the winter but if its not then you're going to cause a problem

so regardless should in general not release any fish at all, as well as plants because you can never predict what might or might not happen.

How do you raise fry? Our koi had fry twice, but both times we were unsuccesful at keeping them alive :(
Oni-kun
Dec 6th, 2005, 08:57 PM
Well i don't know much about Koi but generally you want to feed Fry small live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and those type of things. I don't feed live foods i just crush shrimp pellets or use shrimp flakes and they know how to eat it. Just make sure you feed a high quality diet. If they are outdoors in a pond they should be eating the bugs and stuff and worms that get into the pond anyway (misquito larva etc..) Again i dont know much about koi.

Are guppies live bearers? Koi's lay eggs and when they're first hatched, they are very small...most of the died in this stage. We did manage to get a couple to about 1cm, but they died shortly after too :(

Yeah, guppies are live bearers.
Were the koi frys kept in a pond? Maybe the reason that it didn't survive was because it didn't get any food. They sell special powder foods just for frys.

No, we're too cheap for a pond. They were in a tank. Moved the eggs along with original tank wanter into another tank once we saw them.
We did feed it brine shrimp the 2nd time around...I think they died because the water was too dirty as we didn't have a filter set up.

Koi's are dirty fishes to keep in a indoor tank. by dirty, i mean they are heavy waste producers. anyways, your fry probably died due to a lack of food and possibly aeration.

Origional tank water is your problem. If you're worried about water chemistry use 50% from the tank. Then when they hatch do water changes. Just make sure you remove the chlorine, chloramine and make sure the temperature is the same as the tank and change the water frequently. If you want to make a cheap filter jam a tube from an airpump into a sponge and you got a filter!
