Can China pull off their EVD format?

China produces about 80% of all the dvd players, it’s fair for them to have a say on developing their own format, which is named EVD. Will you be interested since EVD is loyalty free which saves 40% of dvd player cost. When HD DVD and Bluray comes out next year, it will be expensive. EVD will arrive the year after, the problem of that is the dvd format maybe stabilized already.

I commend them for their advancement in technology. Many people will look forward to buying P-Mall bootlegs in EVD format.

I voted No, because I believe the primary goal for the Chinese technology/entertainment sector with EVD should be to control the rampant piracy. Chinese piracy makes North American piracy look like a slight bee sting; the entertainment and software industries are essentially crippled.

Other than avoiding the intellectual property behind HD-DVD/BluRay tech, I'm not seeing the benefit of EVD.

Even if correct, 40% is the initial savings; competition will rapidly bring that pricing disparity down. I think China built EVD as a point of national/cultural pride, as much as any technical or legal concerns.

Sony has historically been reluctant to license its technology/intellectual property. N64 and Dreamcast had relatively weak 3rd party support, compared to the PS1.

PC over Apple, I won't argue that price was a big factor.

I think they can't pull it off in the North American market. Europe, unlikely.

They can only modify the machines. But they still need distribution channel for the EVD format DVDs. And this is where the market is extremely difficult to penetrate.

The movie houses, distributors etc. have huge margins on their wares. So they'll likely maintain their cut.

for the people in china to buy DVD players is too expesive for them to own.. everyone there still use VCD players. low quailty.

EVD I would like more information on this format? but most likely I'd be jumping on the bandwagon for hd-dvd. I like my image quaity to be very high! to see all the hairs on the persons face when they do close up in some movies when talking.
