Costco $8 a tire, installed & balanced.

and remember if you're only putting 2 snowtires on, put them on the rear.

Thanks, I've noticed that at Costco they put the tires on the rear. Costco now refuses to touch anyone elses tires except their own

I have 2 questions.. 1) What if your car is only front wheel drive? Should you also put the 2 snow tires in the rear? 2) Is it safe to have 2 snow tires + 2 all season? TIA!

Well the general rule of thumb for snowtires is to buy 4, don't cheap out and buy just 2. It's just safer overall to get all 4.

The reason why they recommend putting the tires on the back (regardless if your car is front or rear wheel drive) is to prevent the rear from losing traction and fishtailing.

In the winter you're more likely to fishtail than any other time of the year, so the tires with the most traction should be put on the back. If your all season tires don't grip in the snow you really should be looking to replace them anyways.

hubby's a mechanic by trade, and we always put the snow tires on the front.
Couldn't tell you his reasoning, but i can tell you I slip and slide around alot more when they're not.

Mounting only 2 snow tires is not a wise proposition. Traction is about balance and having 2 grippy, 2 not-so-grippy tires means you are unbalanced to begin with. Here is a great analogy -- ever play or watch curling? You wear a gripper on one foot and a slider on the other... when you are new to it, you are either on your ass or doing circles.

Your car weighs 3000lbs and costs more than $5,000... you contact the ground at four hand-sized contact patches... get good rubber. You are protecting you and your investment for an extra $300 for 2 more snows...

As for front vs. back... snow tires enhance BRAKING - stick them on the front. Driving in winter is about braking and steering ability. Acceleration is behind these in terms of importance.

Yes braking is a big cause of accidents.

But so are cars spinning out. With good tires on the front and shitting ones on the rear, the back will come out quickly when turning or not going exactly straight.

The reat tires are still used in braking, not as much as the front, but still better than nothing.

Just buy another pair of tires, its really not worth it, unless u plan to drive like a grandma and cause traffic backups, etc.

That depends... I'm a member and just had Costco mount my snows for free, even though I didn't purchase the tires there. However, my snows are already mounted on rims, otherwise I'm sure they would have charged a nominal fee (Sam's club quoted 2.50/tire if they are mounted on rims).

They also told me that starting next year they will not offer this free service unless you buy the tires at their location.

which location did you use. i just called markam and they said they will not touch snow tires unless they were bought there.

At my local Costco, installation+balancing is $11/tire. Their policies:
- winter-summer swap is free as long as one of the sets of tires is from Costco
- no installation of just 2 winter tires on FWD vehicles...gotta get all 4 installed. For RWD, just 2 is fine.

I never understood why people skimp and only put on 2 snow tires (or no snow tires at all). Yes, there is the initial investment in the tires and rims, but your only additional cost versus having one set is the rims and any labour required. You don't waste more tire by having two sets since you're not driving on all 8 at once. In the end, you buy tires 1/2 as often as you normally would if you had 1 set.

i need to take off my AS tires and mount and balance my winters on. Only one set of rims.

Anyone know a place that will do a good job for cheap? In the gta.

Let me know if you guys can recommend any good places.

ps. I would take it to costco like suggested above, but no membership.

I know you can use Petro-Points to get a freel balancing. Don't think that includes mounting but you can always check.

I would recommend you get a set of steel wheels for the winter (~$200). You won't potentially stretch your tires taking them on and off the rims every year. Plus, change the tires yourself every year and save money and hassle of the bi-annual mounting and balancing (~$80 a year).

that's what i'm doing, this mounting will be a one time thing.

I'm going to mount them once on my stock wheels, and then pick up a set of summer rims/tires.

anyway know any good place? the going rate seems to be $80-$100...kinda high imo.

swapping seems to be alot more $ than just bringing in the wheels and tires and getting them mounting without dealing with a car.

also does anyone know if the shops are currently backordered? (i'm pretty sure everyone is in a mad rush to get their winters on)...so if i drop my car off how long do you think it'll take?

try kipling tire in etobicoke, they had a bunch of extra rims in the back which I picked up cheap for cash for my winters.

I like Nokian. If not, I would get Michelin X-Ice.
