Although to me $569 for a console seems flippin ridiculous (as in I will never even contemplate buying this thing until it hits the ~ $269 price point), I do seem to recall making my parents pay ~$450 for a 3D0 in the 90's....and that was pretty much so I could play super street fighter 2 turbo. Then again I didn't even bat an eye at making them pay $130 bux for Final Fantasy 3 either....(hell that game was easily worth double that)

Personally I'd never pay that much of my own hard earned money for a console....but I betcha this thing'll be selling like crazy come christmas time...

i thought there was only two different boxes they were selling. did they change the premium kit? will the one the people are winning have 2 gamepads and stuff? anyone know? or is this kit compiled themselves at costco?

nevermind. i guess its a custom kit.

Holy crap. Why so expensive?

'cause it was 24bit man! 24bit! I remember it being the only game I ever bought over a $100 bux. $99.99 the first day it came out, slap on some tax and it was more like $114 or whatever tax was back then. So now that I think about it not quite $130 but more then what anyone today would consider acceptable.

If I recall Star Fox and those stupid FX Chip games also demanded a pretty penny....it was a whole nother chip you know :)

a bit OT, but I remember going to that vid shop on Younge near the Eaton Centre (before they cleaned that area up) and bought the JAP Strider for $120. Then filed it down to play in my NA genesis. Also, Ninja Gaiden fetched $90 bucks or so. Wow, those were the days when games were expensive and it better be good because you played it even if it was crap because they were so expensive.

:)

Ya, the costco deal is fine for a preorder, especially if you also get the 4% off (AMEX plus Exec membership)

I just got to play a couple demos of xbox360 games at EB @ Erinmills Town Centre, they had a booth setup and the graphics were phenominal! Can't wait for it to finally be released, PGR3 is worth the price of admission alone!

The price of needing to buy all the games makes up a significant portion of the difference.

There are a lot more "demos" available for the average pc user.

isnt the premium package in USD $399? 399 * 1.2 (~approx xchange) ~$480 CDN. where's my extra $80 bucks :p

also can anyone confirm is this costco package have the wireless network adapter? it doesnt mention it. if it doesnt include it, then it should, for $500+

premium pkg in us@ $480 can, no problem. you haven't added the 2nd wireless controller or play and charge kit..

all in all, it is a good deal for the costco unit. $570 less my 2% Exec reward, and my 1% Amex reward (I don't rake up enough or carry a balance to catch 2%)... That's $17 at the end of the year, netting out $553

I guess most people here aren't hardcore gamers? I shelled out over $1000 for the Xbox when it launched 4 years ago, and I was a student then. It was well worth the money the amount of hours put into gaming on that thing. The 360 is reasonably priced considering what you're getting. Wait till the PS3 comes out, that'll be a ridiculous price, unless Sony is planning on losing millions on the hardware alone. With a Blu-Ray drive, forget cheap games or cheap hardware.

And this costco deal is alright, you're saving about $20 over buying the stuff seperately, nothing special, but if you were gonna buy those 2 extras, you'd be best to buy this 'bundle'.

I don't think you understand what he's referring to. You can find virtually any PC game for free online - regardless of what it is selling for in stores.

The same can't be said for an Xbox (at least not without a mod chip).

You're talking about piracy here. And you know, being a PC and a console gamer, there really is no competition. Consoles are much more entertaining than PCs for games. Ya, PC games can have better graphics in some cases, but it'll cost you a lot more to do that, plus there's nothing like sitting on a comfortable couch or your bed playing an Xbox/Xbox 360 game on Live. The other for me is that PCs lack certain styles of games, like fighting and racing (GT4, Forza and PGR style). But hey, I think we're all digressing into OT for this thread...

Not necessarily true, I remember playing Halo and PGR when I got the original Xbox at launch for months upon months, great multiplayer and single player games. I'm sure PGR3 will easily be as enthralling, if not exceed, especially with the new Xbox Live.

the specs on this thing is pretty good...i mean 3 3.2mhz cpus? I wonder if there's a way to mod it so that it could run as your computer? $600 does seem like a lot of money but i'm gonna wait till futureshop or bestbuy has that promo to sign up for rogers and then get it. another thing, you could also used the xbox as your dvd player since it could output hd.

right on.

why pay so much money to have your life sucked away playing games?

you pay that much for a console, you're gonna think that it's a waste if you dont use it often. so you use it often, dish more money to buy more games, and lose even more of your time.

BUT HERE IS THE BEST DEAL

Buy the premium bundle for anywhere that sells it for 499.99 *1.15 = 574.99

What I don't understand is why would someone want to play PGR3, Perfect Dark Zero, and the other mess of "average to pretty good" xbox360 games when the PS2 lineup costs a mere FRACTION and has excellent holiday games:

Shadow of the Colossus ($39)
Socom III ($49)
Resident Evil 4 (enhanced) ($45)
Dragon Quest VIII ($45)

Not to mention an ever growing lineup of greatest hits games and $34.99 titles like God of War.

Now THAT is bang for buck! :D

Out of date? In terms of graphics? Sure. Take a look at God of War though and tell me it's "out of date" ;)

But as far as a 'gaming fix' goes, this makes no sense. i.e. FUN factor. Graphical upgrades of games that are average to begin with. Plus you're missing out on all the hot releases this fall on PS2. Unless you have time to buy them all and play them all, then by all means a 360 looks awesome :cheesygri

I think you've underscored the value of some of those games. God Of War doesn't retail for $34.99 new anywhere that I've seen. Though I've heard it will go GH soon and drop to 29.99. But as of yet, it still sells for full price 49-59 brand new. I hope it drops soon, as it's one of the games I'd like to pick up.

Socom is still 59 new, and Dragon Quest 8 isn't out yet. As popular a series as that one is, it will most certainly sell for full retail price. $59-$65 or so before tax I would guess.

Although, I do agree with you that Ps2 has tons of great games for cheap now that it's been out for so long. Easily the best alternative to a 360.. plus, you can play your old Ps1 games on it too!

And you can buy the HDD addon for $120... which is only $20 extra. I'm thinking on getting a core, and hopefully when i need a HDD, there will be third party ones with much more storage.

The reason people crap on the core bundle is it's not actually $100 cheaper. You will have to buy a memory card to save your games if you don't have the HD, which costs at least $40. So for only $60 more you're getting the HD plus the wireless controller rather than wired. I wouldn't advise anyone to get the core bundle personally.

And in general, sure this is lot of money but you're getting a hot new console at launch. The included hardware is pretty amazing and I know Microsoft is losing at least $50 per console sold at the outset.

I am buying the premium console from FS ($500 - $450 after 50 off 500 coupon) and will wait for a deal on the games, 2nd controller etc. I will rent a couple of games for now.

As others have said, there are people here who will spend this kind of coin on a PC video card alone. For the cash strapped, the good news is we can probably soon expect price drops on the PS2 and XBox 1, as well as even cheaper games for those systems.

Got to play the system at Futureshop today. They had just set it up and jumped on for 5 minutes to play Call of Duty 2. The graphics were good...everything ran smooth. The graphics were good - look as good as my 7800GTX. It was only on a 19" (or so) LCD. Can't wait to see it on a big HDTV.

I don't think you understand what he's referring to. You can find virtually any PC game for free online - regardless of what it is selling for in stores.

The same can't be said for an Xbox (at least not without a mod chip).
As of now there are No modchips for the 360.
Future availability is a moot point because MS would have to be pretty dense not to have learned the lesson from their 1st XBox. They will make it very hard to crack.

Consoles, like razor handles, are loss leaders. When your console can be easily modified to a cheap Linux box, and your games copied for the cost of a blank DVD-R, you have a problem. Microsoft was losing money on every XBox sold and if the XBox division cannot recoup the losses from the game sales, they are in deep excrement.

I didn't word it properly, what I meant is I spent over $1000 when I bought my original Xbox at launch, meaning, games, accessories, etc... well worth the money. And FYI, the launch price of the Xbox was $469.99 in Nov of 2001.

$1000 for the xbox when it came out? LOL i think I got a great deal on my xbox, 2 days after it came out, my friend didnt like it and sold it to me (along with 2 games and 1 extra controller) for $250. (I believe the xbox alone was $449.99 in store, why did you pay$1000 for it?_

Funny people call the xbox360 expensive, yet some buy $600 video cards and $2000 PCs. Anyone remember when PS1 was $400-$500 when it first came out?

It all depends on who you are talking to. For people who just want to play games and don't want the hassle of installing and eventually finding that the game won't run properly and have to deal with the hassles of either figuring it out for themsleves or calling tech support/web forums/friends, then a console is perfect for them. For me, a $600 video card is well worth the price and to prove my point further, I bought two this year for my SLI machine. Yes it is expensive but for some people, it's a hobby and a computer can be tweaked, built for speed and be modified in various configurations - again as a hobby.

the specs on this thing is pretty good...i mean 3 3.2mhz cpus? I wonder if there's a way to mod it so that it could run as your computer? $600 does seem like a lot of money but i'm gonna wait till futureshop or bestbuy has that promo to sign up for rogers and then get it. another thing, you could also used the xbox as your dvd player since it could output hd.

I've read an article in (Hub Nov 05 issue) that details the other features that aren't game related. It's becomming a common-place for consoles to be a AIO package for homes. Not only will it play DVDs, it also plays photo CDs, live video/voice chat to anyone who owns another XBox 360 and a few other feautures that I can't remember right now. It almost made me want to buy one.

I wont be buying one until they are moddable..

Although most people expect it to take at least a year, I have a sneaking suspiscion its going to be MUCH faster

Especially because they messed up by not using HDDVD or BLU-RAY

They were shipped to the customers this week? Does this mean we should recieve it on or around launch day?

no, shipped to Costco this week. along with EB, FS, BB etc. I don't think they will ship them to customers till the release date. But I could be wrong.

I'm hoping there's a big delay and they don't ship until Dec. 23. That's cause my order is supposed to be a Xmas present for my kid. I'm going to have a hard time keeping it wrapped up for a month!

Just wondering what everyone's shipping status is on their Costco X360 preorders . With all the Future Shop guys on the board reporting that theirs as showing up as shipped.

The status on my 360 order at Costco is still marked as "In Process".

You guys crack me up complaining about the console price. MS loses money on every console. You should be complaining about software prices! $60-$80 for a game that has maybe a 3 month shelf life. Now *that's* the crack cocaine of the technology universe.

No. 60$ for a game is a good price. You'll have 50 hours of entertainment with one. DVDs one the other end will only provide you with 2 hours of entertainment for 1/3 of the price... I've stopped buying DVDs since I've noticed that and by pc games instead.
