Incidentally, the Dominion flyer says something along the lines of "Mix and match 5 for $5, or $1 each."
Now, with the $1 each part, isn't the 5 for $5 bit redundant? Shouldn't this deal more accurately be described as "A&P/Dominion has a bunch of stuff on for $1 each, only they're trying to trick people into buying five items unnecessarily"?

Common practice in grocery stores. Safeway, Sobey's, RCSS all do it.

I don't think it's stupid marketing. I think it's intentional because some people will think that you have to buy 5 items. It's all thought out ahead of time to trick people.

good point re not having to get the 5 items
Although it's not required in this example most places
charge you extra if you don't buy in req'd quantity
Superstore is really bad for that
p.s. On another page they have some great ice cream bar specials
ie Skor and breyer's @ $1 or 5/$5
They were sold out when I went by tonight but they're supposed
to have some more in tomorrow at 11 am

Note that Superstore has two different tags for multiple item pricing. The 1st reads like "2.98 ea when you buy 3, or $3.48 in less than full multiples" or words to that effect. Items like this will show on your receipt like
$3.48
$3.48
$1.98 <- discount for multiple is taken off 3rd item
The other shelf tag simply shows something like "2/$4.98". If you see a tag like that you do not need to purchase the full multiple. Items will ring up at $2.49 each no matter how many you buy.
