View Full Version : Safeway 800 airmiles for $250 Deal

Safeway has a Extreme AirMiles deal for some of their locations. See the last few posts of this thread for current deal locations (as they keep changing the locations each week).
The flyer has the following coupons:
"Get 800 airmiles for $250 purchase"
"Get 400 airmiles for $150 purchase"
"Get 150 airmiles for $75 purchase"
"Get 200 airmiles with purchase of 100 diabetes meter test strips".
Note: You don't need the flyer to get the coupon offer as most of the cashiers have the coupons at their stations & will scan them for you.
Make sure when you check out that the cashier *does* swipe the bonus airmiles coupon. A couple of times I just about lost the bonus as the cashier did not swipe the coupon. 'Most' cashiers at the Safeway have a set of bonus coupons right beside them but a couple do not & give you a line about that you have to have the coupon - which is bull cr__ seeing as the cashier right next to them will have the coupon right beside them. So YMMV - but if all else fails go to customer service with your bill and have them take the information down & they can manually post the bonus airmiles.

Safeway has distributed a flyer with the Free Press newspaper to residents in the Osborne / Fort Rouge area. This week the flyer has a get 600 airmiles for $200 purchase coupon in it along with a get 500 airmiles with purchase of 100 test strips for diabetes test meter.
My friend lives in the area and had an extra flyer - so I lucked out!!.
Time to raid some apartment buildings. :)
You should add SAFEWAY to your title btw.

Hopefully this gets expanded nationalwide in the future. I learned in my marketing class that Winnipeg is the most popular test market in Canada. The population size is adequate to obtain an accurate result, but if the product/service fails then Winnipeg is isolated enough that they can retire the promo without most of the nation ever knowing.

It was in Saskatoon as well, but with significantly less air miles, which sucks:
250 miles for $200
100 miles for $100
and 3x miles on pharmacy purchases over $50

I'm fairly sure this is their usual offer. I see coupons for these bonus miles about every second week in the newspaper (usually on weeks when they don't offer 10% off or 10X Air Miles on the first and third Tuesdays of the month).

coupons like this come out everywhere from what i kno.
in BC most coupons aren't as exciting (like sask.)
however 10x your airmiles on pharmacy prescriptions is an awesome deal.
that happens on Customer Appreciation Days (CAD) which is the first tuesday of every month. I know of a lot of people who get their prescriptions paid for by Pharmacare (Govt) but end up gettin' crap loads of airmiles every month. Any elderly ppl on here, or just plain sick, should take advantage!~

You don't need the flyers to get the deal - each casher has a set of coupons that they re-use as required.
The flyers are distributed in the mail to some homes.

maybe safeway is renovating nationwide? in Vancouver and Burnaby they have started changing everything. now some stores even have Starbucks in them, and all departments look like a 'bistro' now and/or a cool supermarket with fancy floors and fancy cases and so on.

I did this a few times in November and December. A co-worker was bringing in a few flyers a week from his apartment building in Osborne Village.
The last time I went, I spent $200 and received just over 1100 airmiles, I think. (600, plus regular AMs on $200, and bonus airmiles for buying x amount of certain products.) I was able to cash that out for $150 in airmiles gift certs. :) :) :)
Very happy to see this back. I called that location this morning and they weren't able to confirm how long this offer would be on for. In November 2005, they were able to tell us that it would last until the end of 2005.

 Wow! Now if you couple this with the Chef Boyardee deal...
Let's see if you buy 150 cans of Chef Boyardee @$1, that's $150 for the 400 airmiles...
plus you can get 50 airmiles with the purchase of 10 Chef Boyardees, that's 15 x 50 = 750 airmiles...
so for $150 you can get a total of 1150 airmiles...
which translates to approximately $150 worth of gift cards, since most $25 GCs cost 175-195 airmiles...
hmmm...you can get enough ravioli to fill your bathtub and soak in it

Too bad they can't just give you the cash value of the Air Miles instead. The Loyalty Group sells their Air Miles to sponsors for approximately $0.40 per mile. I'd rather have $240 cash in my pocket than 600 Air Miles!
The Loyalty Group makes their profit by selling Air Miles for $0.40/mile. When you redeem, your merchandise is worth approximately $0.12 to $0.13/mile. The difference is their profit before expenses. That's what makes points programs so profitable for companies that run them and why Aeroplan is valued at $1 billion.

I do agree it's probably moved to the Burnaby Heights store or one of the many newly remodeled Safeways like Lougheed Mall or Broadway and Commercial Drive. Good Luck in Finding it GVA RFDer's. As it is a instore special, not as a special pull out in the flyer.

Is it on their Sunday flyer or some coupon book?
On the Sunday flyer I found only a few "buy X get 50 miles" deals but didn't see any "$200 for 250 miles". So it seems hard to climb up to 600 miles.

You can do even better than that:
5 x Safeway Specialty Coffee @ $1.49 = $7.45 for 50 AM (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=250356)
7.45 x 20 = $149 (add something else for a buck)
20 x 50 AM = 1000 AM + 400 bonus = 1400 AM = $175 to $200 in GCs
Plus the coffee is much smaller and lighter to carry. :cheesygri
I still don't get why people would rather have $200 in lousy gift cards when 1600 AM is worth a round trip flight anywhere in Canada.
Do you guys hate to travel or something?

When it was in BC a month ago it was always a instore promo not in flyers or ads on TV/Radio. So I would think it's the same in Winterpeg.
Any word about this deal being still on at Burnaby Heights in BC. It's not at my safeway.

Do you guys hate to travel or something? It's worth a round trip flight if you have the Westjet CC (IIRC $75 annual fee for most people) and you still have to pay the taxes & fees.
If you get the GCs you can sell them on Ebay (almost always for close to face value) and recoup your costs if not make a little bit, plus you have the free groceries still.
To each their own, I guess. I don't redeem for GCs however, and am close to a "free" flight to Europe or Asia.

First of all, many thanks to Careh for informing me about and Air Miles for funding my next 2 trips home :) ! Just got back from Southdale Safeway and have some news. Yes, Osborne is discontinuing this promo, BUT Southdale just started in January, and according to the lady at the Customer Service Desk, while Safeway has the right to pull the offer at any time, they usually let it go for 5 months in order to have an adequate sample for research. It looks like I, too will be one of those people who will have groceries for the next decade!

If you have a freezer - grab a couple of the frozen pre-stuffed turkeys. They are around $40 a piece & great for times when you want turkey as you just stick them in the oven right out of the freezer (I'd sugest removing the plastic wrap first though).
Pick up a few boxes of laundry detergent & stock up on canned goods & paper goods. You will be up around $200 before you know it.

Can somebody attempt to justify how this is a hot deal?
If you're buying $250 at safeway, you certaintly are not an astute shopper. You will save more money buying the bulk of your groceries at costco/superstore, pharmacy items at pharmacies, and produce at produce stands.
To buy $250 worth of stuff just so you can get airmiles just seems ridiculous to me.

Well, you've named 3 different places to buy 3 different types of products. Yet you can buy all you need at Safeway. Maybe their prices aren't always the most competitive, which is why TYinYVR posts the best deals of the week. They have excellent sale items, and they're BOGO deals are great. If you stick to most of the sale items, which cover a lot of products, you can easily save as much as the stores you mentioned. If you have small children, or a family, you'll find yourself going through the staples every week anyways, so racking up $250 isn't that difficult.
So your way would be, travel to Costco/Superstore, then head to Shoppers' for pharmaceuticals, and then head out to wherever for your fresh produce. When you have a family or your free time is important to you, this doesn't seem such a viable option. Since you're going to spend it anyways, why not get some bonus airmiles while you're at it?

Amen... I'm sick of these posts where people drive 30 minutes to save $0.08
I have no idea about you, but my time is worth a bit more then that. I'd rather pay a few dollars more and get EVERYTHING at once and have time to spend with my family then spend the day running from store to store to get the absolute best price only to waste the entire day.
I know we are all on RFD because we love deals... but is it such a deal to save money only to lose time with your friends and family?

I don't buy all my groceries at Safeway. For me it like 50/50 Safeway/Save on. I goto my Safeway almost everyday b/c it has a Starbucks inside and when you buy 7 coffees you get the eighth one for free but only at Safeway Starbucks. I don't like Stupid (Super)Store. When you have to buy 3 items to get the good price. Or all the no name products. If you like yellow boxes and having to pack your own groceries, all to save like 5 to 10 off your $150 bill. Then shop there. That is just my view. You don't have to shop at Safeway if you don't want to. Every store has it's good and bad points.
The best deal is to buy $150 and you get 400 ams. If you buy $150 twice for $300 you will get 800 ams or 200 ams for 50 dollars.

You are NOT wrong - Safeway IS more expensive then other places - but the bonus airmiles (for me anyway) make it worth paying the 'up charge'.
We all have different priorities - which is what makes a hot deal for one person a cold deal for another.
For me the bonus airmiles are worth it as I use them for travel we would otherwise not be able to take. I know I pay more by shopping at Safeway than at other grocers - but I hate the crowds and the self-bagging at Superstore and I don't get the benefit of having to PAY to shop at Costco (I just don't get it -the Costco model that is- even though I know many people out there DO).
Meanwhile my sister-in-law shops at Superstore and Costco but does not want to get into the At Home (http://stratford-citizens.ca/tiki-index.php?page=Memberworks) gift card program.
For pharmacy prescription items I suggest Zellers or the Bay provided you use At Home (http://stratford-citizens.ca/tiki-index.php?page=Memberworks) gift cards for payment - that way you are getting 20% off. You can also get the Zellers/Bay pharmacy to price match other pharmacies.
For pharmacy non-prescription items and other stuff Zellers sells - find yourself a person over 55 years of age and on the first Monday of the month take them to Zellers. Fill your cart with stuff - then have them go through the checkout till with it. They get 10% off - plus Zellers Price Matches other retailers - usually you can just tell the cashier the other retailer's price AND don't forget to use the 20% off gift cards for payment.
I take the savings from the above - and use them to pay for the extra cost of buying stuff at Safeway....Then its onto the plane....

I think I actually drive less because I do most of my grocery shopping at Costco. I stock up once a month, then go to safeway about once a week, same with the produce store.
My main bone of contention here is that if you're buying $250 worth of stuff at safeway, you're probably buying large quantities of items. If you're doing that, why not shop at Costco?
If you comparison shop safeway prices to costco prices, you're saving well over 20% on average. I only buy items on sale at safeway 75% of the time.

Like Careh, I use the AM almost purely for flight tickets, while not like him I don't usually do my grocery shopping at safeway -- only when they have special AM deals, to take the benefit of these extra AMs.
Careh and other RFDers alreday made a good point about the AMs are worth of paying more at Safeway. I would just provide some numbers to show the benefit a bit more straight forward.
During last three months I did most of my grocery shopping at safeway, and have accumulated over 8000 AMs from there. In average I spend about $150 for each trip (weekly). That's roughly $2025 in total as my cost of grocery shopping.
1 AM is worth $0.30 as how Aire Miles calculates it for flight tickets (if you don't have enough AMs available then you use this formula to calculate how much cash you need to pay for the balance). If use this figure the AMs I have collected are $2400, and that means I was paid to get grocery from safeway. If used lower end of the cash value (when you trade the gift cards from Air Miles), which is about $0.15, I still have the benefit of $1200. That's almost 60% off for my grocery shopping, which is much better than the typical 20~30% discount you get from Superstore.
That's why I go Safeway, but only when they have some special AM Promotion.
BTW, I personal think the $150 gets 400 AMs is the best deal (or if you can push it to $300, make it 2X400 AMs).

152/4 = 38 x 20 AM = 760 AM
Total: 1160 AM = 12.972 cents/AM
That's fairly warm, but not the hot deal of 1900 AM that I was hoping for. :| Once in a while I see stuff I'd actually eat/keep for myself at 16-17 cents/AM.
Customer service ran out of $150 coupons, they give you a code to take to the cashier. Apparently this is the only Lower Mainland location with the offer this week.

They have 3 coupons in the flyer, available in store. $150/400, $250/600 and one for prescriptions.

do you know how many airmiles for prescriptions?

It's 200 Airmiles for the purchase of 100+ diabetes glucometer sticks.
And this is on again this week, Kits Safeway, Broadway/Mcdonald.

I still dn't understand how Safeway can do this - it's like theyd hemmoriging money on it.
800 AM for $250 spent? I could use 1600 of my AM (via BMO Gold WestJet card) to fly to Manitoba and back, while there buy $2000 of random groceries and donate them to the food bank. When I get back home I have a *net gain* of 1600 AM ( 3200 total ), plus I got a free weekend trip to Winnipeg (ok, *that* part is not so hot... ) :P
Multiply that by 4 or 5 weekends of the year - you'd have all the free flights you'd ever want (minus taxes and airport fees of course). Am I missing something here?!?!

Your math is off. If you spent $2000, you should receive 800 AM up to eight times ($250 x 8 = $2000). That's 6400 Air Miles, not 3200. Since you need 1600 to get there, your net gain is 4800 AM. You also receive another 100 AM because $20 spent = 1 AM, plus $15 spent = 1 AM using your BMO Mosaik gold card. Plus if you spend your $2000 on items that qualify for bonus Air Miles, you'd earn even more miles. You should reach 7500 AM with relative ease.
4800 AM is enough to fly round trip in North America three times on WestJet flights during high season.

Even more insane... so basically you spend 1 day buying groceries and you get 6 round trip flights anywhere in NA.... plus you donate food!
Can anyone in the area of a Safeway confirm how long it usually takes to get these miles credited to your account? I am seriously considering this now...

Usually anywhere from 2-8 weeks. If you decide to go for it, you might want to take a large empty suitcase along so you have some groceries of your own to bring back. :D
Things to keep in mind:
1. Sign up for a Safeway club card to get the sale prices
2. Only 1 (or 2?) locations in town have the deal
3. You still have to pay taxes & fees on the flights you cash in
Basically it's like prepaying those trips, and I don't see you coming out ahead in the end, just break even.

But only of you book 8 months in advance and don't mind flying on Thursdays. (Seriously, it's harder to get the 1600 AM flights on WestJet than it ever was to get Aeroplan flights.)

I have to disagree.. I've booked 5 flights with Airmiles on WestJet. I've never had a problem getting what I wanted... including 2 flights coming up at Christmas.

Awesome deal for airmiles if you could score the 800 airmiles...almost makes we want to put together a shopping list and headout to buy some overpriced groceries!!
I was there to pick up a couple of small things yesterday, which included Aunt Jemima pancake syrup. It was 4.52 for a medium sized bottle. Just now I came back from Walmart, the same bottle there was 2.82!!!
Gotta love the airmiles deal - but in general the prices for groceries are a ripoff!
Now only if they had a pricematch policy similar to what Staples used to have!
Now that would be a sweet deal! ;)

Looks like the 600 ams deal is ending Sat at sunwood safeway in Coq. I got next weeks flyer in my page today and there was no 600 ams flyer. Like every other week when it's on. So if you want to take advantage of the deal you better go tonight or 2mrow. I will post on Sunday if it continues or if it comes back in the future but it had a good 2 month run at Sunwood.

Safeway AM's are a great deal but I just gotta say after shopping there and picking up 194 for $75 or more purchae their pricing is horrible. No matter what you purchase at Safeway the majority of items even when on sale are higher priced then their competitors here in GVRD, specifically Superstore.
Makes you wonder what the true cost of the airmiles are even though there is no way to accumulate them as fast other than through their AM deal but their pricing in general sux

I never buy anything at reg price at Safeway. But I don't like Superstore b/c you have to buy 5 No name items to get the good price. Buy 1 item and pay a worst price then safeway. And limited name brand items. But hey if you enjoy the colour yellow. Packing your own food. And like eating what GW Bush chooses for you. HeeHee. Go to RCSS. I shop mostly at Safeway or Save on. Thats me(:-)+<

Sale price at Safeway on named brand items is reg price at any other store. The buy 5 to get a deal is not so true on some things it is for sure, many of the name brand products they carry are cheaper than Safeway on sale, example Silk Soy milk single purchase is 2.99 (buy 3 its 2.67/per) at RC on a single purchase Safeway 3.49-3.99 , Beyers Ice Cream 8.49 at Safeway same product at Superstore 4.99 on sale 5.99 reg. I have compared it on the name brand products dairy is a big savings for the same named item as well as hard goods and frozen stuff that is not no name
You can't collect airmiles faster than using Safeway AM's are great but Safeway is riding your hershey highway with their prices

You don't have to tell me Safeway has high prices. OK I know!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have I ever posted go shop at safeway for the CHEAP Prices. NO. I post the AMs offers.
I know RCSS is BIG SMOKE TDOT based, one reason why I don't shop there. (President Choice GW BUSH not AMERICAN) PEOPLE Take EVERYTHING to Securely. OVER YOU HEAD I GUESS!
Save on is VANCITY based and that is why I shop mostly here and it's cheaper then safeway and better located then RCSS FOR ME. It not the cheapest. I know. It fits my needs.
I GET 90% of my airmiles at safeway. IF you are just there to shop for price DO NOT SHOP AT SAFEWAY. DO YOU WANT ME TO REPEAT THAT.
USUALLY I ONLY SPEND MAYBE LIKE 20-30 dollars a week at safeway on AM deals. OK. You can take this info and shop where ever you want. I don't care. I know most people on this board are just about the bottom line. Well good for u. Sometimes price is not everything. I Don't WORK at Safeway but I have got tons of AM from them. AND Safeway is in Ontario but in Thunder Bay and I don't think they want to go into GTA. They are only in Western Canada.

At this Safeway in Brandon they are currently offering:
800 miles for $250 in groceries; 400 miles for $150 in groceries. Buy your $150 in groceries and get a .14c off a litre for gasoline and a coupon for 5% of your next grocery purchase when you buy your gas! I have to tell you when you only need 1600 airmiles to fly anywhere in North America with Westjet - I can't beat that no matter where I shop. It is at the cheapest $500 Canadian to fly to Florida right now. Think about it! I figured it out by comparing with Supervalue and my ticket cost $31 dollars to go to Florida. Safeway also has a produce guarantee. If your produce goes bad you get DOUBLE your money back and no product or single your money back and new product - I don't know any store that guarantees that!
