I was thinking to buy a copy of it. But my friend has a cracked version so I wanted to try it first before I buy. Some of the people said that they use the Half Life Engine to do all the phyics, but... after I played for a while, I saw the graphicz for this game made me feel so disappointed.
All the graphics look like CS 1.6, unlike the HL2, it is so laggy with my system (6800ultra, 2 x DDR433 1GB OCZ).
The thing I am conerning is that is it because of a cracked version, the graphicz so bad or what? Do you think the graphics for the retail version would be better??

I'm not exactly sure how you came to that conclusion...you must be running it at really low resolution. The game has one of the best graphics engines and is on par with the Doom 3 engine in most areas. I personally like the feel of the Doom3, source and Crytek's engines better, but Fear still has amazing graphics, especially shadows and character models. I have it running at 1280x1024 everything on high (except soft shadows off) with 4XAA and it looks absolutely amazing. Granted it takes a lot to run the game but even on medium the game looks really good.

whoa.. that doesn sound right at all.. looking like C.S 1.6... and your system looks good and should be able to run it in med... cracked version and retail having diff gfx... im not sure about that... the game is like 5gb installed... o_O ... maybe the cracked version is missing some gfx...

Poor framerates do not "lag" you. Also there's a thread about F.E.A.R. in the entertainment forum.
Decent game, decent graphics, engine would be nice if it wasn't so horribly inefficient.

It's all the realistic shadows and lighting in the game that cause the drop in performance. However, the problem is that the shadows and lighting don't add a whole lot to the visual appeal of the game. It's a great technical feat, but it kills performance if you don't have nice hardware.
On an artistic and design level, the game is alright, but could have benefited from more complex geometry in the environment. However, the setting is industrial, so you can't really get too imaginitive anyways.
The game has one of the best shooting effects and sequences that I've seen. During intense firefights, smoke, debris, sparks, bullet casings, and blood are flying all over the place. It's really cool. The game is very intense. It also creeps you out very nicely, through subtle supernatural events scattered through the game - gives me the chills.... But anyways, still screenshots are no good - you've got to see the game in motion during the action sequences before you can cast judgement.
For better performance, do not run the game on maximum settings. Try dropping the shadow detail to medium (shadow settings have a big effect). You can even try minimum, but then the player and enemy models won't cast shadows (it's actually not too noticeable most of the time). Screen resolution has a huge effect too, which is obvious. To prevent hitching (stuttering due to HD access), set the texture resolution to medium - everything will still look just fine.

I think FEAR's one of (if not THE) best (http://brightshadow.org/screens/fear6.jpg) looking games (http://brightshadow.org/screens/fear4.jpg) out there..
And it should run fine on a 6800 ultra.. perhaps some of your settings are messed up?

Oh no....
this game is not the best for sure, i played HL2 again yesterday night and i just wanted to try and see if my 6800Ultra is defective or not... it runs smooth and no lag at all. And of course the graphicz is so much better than that F.ea.r. . Yeah it made me fear before because.... i was fear and afraid my card was dead or not...

Yeah, agreed. I've got XP2500, 512MB RAM, 6600GT AGP, nVidia 81.85 drivers. I run F.E.A.R. on medium, with a few on max (like physics), and things look fine to me. Only minor pauses when game is loading assets during some scripted trigger points.
Physics, lots of bouncing particles, and realistic shadows are tough on system resources, so try turning these down if you want to improve FPS.
Just completed the whole story. Ending is hard to believe... how could anyone survive in THAT explosion (you will know what I'm talking about)?
Having completed HL2, it's impossible to decide if F.E.A.R. is better/worse than HL2. I would like F.E.A.R. to have more interactivity (think Deus Ex), and optimize the engine a bit.
Now lets hope the SDK release soon and that it's easier than what HL2 has.

FEAR was good. I would put it on par with HL2 as a game. The enemy AI really brings this game up.
I found alot of pointless running around and pointless puzzles, though. It makes it not so replayable, when you know you have to run around and fill tanks or switch switches to move bridges just to get from one point to another. It's boring replaying those parts. You also tend to retrace your steps alot. Also, alot of indoor clastrophobia.
Graphics are definitely good. Not certain what's going on with the original posters machine.
