Ok, so this is what I have now:

Altec Lansing ACS33 2.1 speaker system and I have a built in 6-channel sound card on my Asus P4P800 SE motherboard.

I'm finding that the mid-range doesn't seem too good. also in movies, the special effects and stuff like explosions seem nice and loud but voices seem too quiet.

I'm looking for another 2.1 system (don't have much room for anything more). Can anyone recommend me a good one that's under $90 or may become cheap during boxing day? I'm really looking more for clarity than power because I have a small room and I listen to music very often. I also want to know if it's worth it for me to get a cheap sound card like a soundblaster live?

Thanks for the help, normally i'm not such a computer n00b but I haven't had to do anything with my audio setup for about 5 years!

voices are quiet.... are you playing surround sound movies? if so you can turn up the center channel (which likely contains most of the voice data)

better yet, just set your decoder to dolby prologic 2... best way to listen 5.1 formats on a stereo system imo

Ok, that sounds right. How do I set my decoder?

Anyone know if I should get a SB Live 24-bit if I purchase a new system (thinking between x-230, z3i, z-2300 depending on what's the best value after xmas...)?

well depends on the media player you use..... for me (i use MPC) i would right click the video while it's playing, then goto filters, then i'll see what filters i'm currently using to playback the file... ffdshow audio is what i use for audio
