Just took a quick peek at a banner ad for skype - I think phone calls via computers are free, but calls to landlines and cells are not. Is it worth downloading?

It's better suited as PC-to-PC software, voice quality is great
Calling out to landlines isn't too bad though, although not free

Great little program.
I used it to call my fiancee while she travelled in Europe. The quality was damn good.
If you're looking for PC-to-Phone program, this is the best.
If you're looking for PC-to-PC program, Google Talk has the best quality that I've seen to date. MSN Messenger (the new voice conversation in version 7.5) is also decent, but it can be sketchy if you're behind a network.

Yeah, I've been on Skype for a little while now - mainly for calling from Montreal to Ottawa (computer to computer) and the sound quality is that of a regular land line ... assuming that both have headsets to talk into, using a regular microphone wont do it justice.

Myself and a few buddies have been using Skype since before it was the cool thing to do. Its the best program I've used so far.

I've been on Skype for a while now. Great "reception". Headsets are a must for any VOIP, IMO, as you'll get too much feedback with mics and speakers.
I also had 10 Euros credit for PC-phone calling, and used part of it, but took 190 days off and had the remainder cancelled, as per their agreement. Bit of a pain, but my fault. The PC-phone service is quite good, however.

i wonder why voip technology is only catching on now... i remember using vocaltec's iPhone program like 10+ years ago over my 14.4k modem... exactly the same thing as skype pc-to-pc calling...

I also have a VOIP adapter for Skype hooked up.
It is an USB hardware with in and out phone jacks. Hooked up to the home phone.
I can recieve Skype calls on my home phone and also dial skype users (have to setup keys). At the same time it is still used as my regular home phone.
EDIT: Not only that, it also has an forward feature, so that if I am not available, I can have it forward to my cellphone. So if ppl abroad call me thru skype and it gets forwarded to my cellphone, it's a local call. :cheesygri :cheesygri
Nothing can beat it! :cheesygri

Skype is great. I use it to communicate with friends in Germany, Korea, and California for free. I've never experienced any service problems and the voice quality is excellent.
