I believe you are talking about SSE optimizations? I think you can enable that in theGUI options. The last time I used F@H, I was using a 900Mhz Athlon Thunderbird lol, so I havent been using it for a while. I remember it did have the option to enable it in the GUI. Check in the options somewhere (someone can help you).

Wasn't it the -ForceSSE command line parameter? It's been a while since I've folded, so that may have changed...

Dollar store splitters cause noise and too much signal loss. If you use them expect to get a letter from your cable company. I have seen one two way splitter in an apartment building affect 60 customers across three different cable fibre optic nodes. The customer was filtered (no digital box or internet or home phone services will work) and called in for a repair. If you have no digital services, they will place a resistive filter that will drop your signal so low, all your pictures will be snowy from lack of signal. This also reduces the noise you are kicking back to the network.
Not sure where you can get high quality splitters from.

a dollar store splitter is just as bad as crappy in-house wiring... Also, the cable wiring job that you did with your brother-in-law using some old spare coaxial cable just wont cut it. Too many breaks in the line is also bad for seeg. invest in some high quality splitters, the kind you find at perhaps Rogers Video, or RadioShack (The SourceCC). Also, dont split up the cable TOO MUCH, every split point will weaken your cable signal strength for the next split.

I've purchased some at Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catentryId=36245&catgroupId=12063&jspStoreDir=HomeDepotCanada&catalogId=10051&action=1&productId=36245&langId=-15&parent_category_rn=12063&storeId=10051&ddkey=mostpop), but they need to be Bi-Directional for digital signal. These don't look quite right.

What are you splitting, cable, satellite, antenna or none of those?
If you are splitting cable or satellite you will need splitters specific to your application, in which case you should contact your provider for their assistance (they may just give you a splitter at no charge).
If it's antenna tv, you can probably get away with a cheap one from a store.. though I honestly don't have a high opinion of the dollar store.

sometimes if a rogers cable tech visits your house for a cable re-wire or install, they generally throw in the splitters at no cost...

i bought mine from bestbuy. it cost around $30, and i think it's made by Monster (the same people who make cables). My signal has virtually no loss whatsoever.
Also, make sure that you are using good quality cables.
