All I will say is that UW residences suck. If you want to enjoy a social life go to UWO.

but UW Engineering (or CS, Accounting) is THE place to go
I don't know about deciding university based on "residence"

Essex and Elgin are the palces that are most exlusively/popular. Saugeen is hte largest and by far the "best" party rez

These two are some of the newest rez on campus. I stayed in Essex and it is quite nice.

I stayed in Alumni House at UWO and it wasn't bad either, definitely prefer the suite style residences over the traditional.

I went to UW for Engineering so would recommend UW. Just keep on top of co-op and if you can, go for stream 4.
For residences,
I would recommend either UW place or Mackenzie King Village. Both are apartment-style residences so you can cook your own food and meal plans are optional. The furniture's all provided too and it's decent stuff (not top of the line, but good enough for rez).
Columbia Lake Village...well...that's just waaaaaaaaaaay too far to walk to class every day for a residence.
Village One and Ron Eydt Village...the food isn't the greatest, but if I was choosing between those two definitely go for village 1...closer to campus and better food.
The church colleges apparently have good food (never eaten there), but the timespan for meals is more restrictive...not necessarily friendly to a first year engineering schedule, although they will make a bag lunch for you ahead of time so I've been told.
I would highly recommend visiting both schools on campus day if that's possible and talking to current students in the program you're interested in.
